Wow! Glad I found this. So many wonderful voices now forgotten. It seems she came down with polio at the height of her career.

What a brisk ride. Do we know the individual identities of the Valkyries ?

Unfortunately, as far as I'm concerned, there is no trace of information on the identity of these Valkyries. Only Lawrence, who sings Gerhilde on side A and Brünnhilde on side B, is known to us: maybe the others were members of the chorus of the Paris Opéra?

An electrifying voice still well remembered in her native Australia notwithstanding the limitations of the recordings of that era and made all the more poignant by the illness that struck her only a few years later at the height of her career

It is nice to know she is still well remembered in Australia! As some of my uploads show, she is a great favorite of mine. A great voice and a great singer!

It is such a shame that Marjorie Lawrence is nearly forgotten today. She is more known for her battle with polio than she is for her singing, and I cannot understand why. Perhaps it's because she, and every other dramatic soprano of the time, stood in the shadow of Flagstad.
