How to Make Revere Ware Handles look New | Restore old Bakelite Handles

  • How I polish old bakelite handles on Revere Ware, Farberware and Ekco pots and pans.
    Note: Old bakelite handles may contain asbestos. We are wet sanding so there is no bakelite 'dust' to inhale and you could wear gloves if concerned. This from: Asbestos in Plastics & Bakelite
    inspectapedia....
    "As we said above, Bakelite, though it contains asbestos, is not friable, is considered of low toxicity, and is not a banned substance."
    Note 2: I called Mothers. They said it is out of production for the moment because lack of supplies to make the product and that it is not discontinued. Phew!

    Arnold Cardon mentioned asbestos in these old bakelite handles. It is something to know. We're wet sanding and not creating dust to inhale. With no repeated exposure. That said, best not to dry sand these old handles just to be safe.

    I've had pretty good luck soaking the handles in Armor All overnight. They wipe off lookin much better with newly restored life and don't feel greasy at all. Sanding off the top oxidized surface before soaking would likely have them looking like new again.

      Me too! Although my last batch seems a bit less polishy? Not sure if they changed anything. I did get it from Amazon. Maybe I'll pick some up locally and compare. I've used it for so many things it's mind blowing :)

      @@xetaprime You should do a video on the ways Mothers Mag can be used! I'm sure there are some I haven't even thought of, and it would be interesting to see if anybody else goes through it like crazy.

    Thank you so very much. I just inherited my grandmother’s Revere pot with a copper bottom. I have no idea how to age this pot but it’s very cool. It was passed down from my grandma to my mom and now me. My Mom is now 92 years young. I am so happy to own this special pot. Thank goodness I found you to save the handle, it’s so dull and dry. Thank again for your video. 😊

      Use barkeeper's friend on the pot, nothing abrasive on the shiny sides though. Use it inside also. It will make them look almost new again.

    What substance is Mother's Mag? Could I use Armor All after sanding?

    • @xetaprime
      @xetaprime  Před rokem +1

      Mothers Mag is an aluminum polish. You can find it at Walmart in the auto section. Amazon or auto parts stores. It's awesome on old bakelite handles or any hard plastics such as the base of my vintage blender. Or the outside aluminum on vintage Farberware and Guardian Service.. I can't praise it enough! Sorry, I can't speak for Armor All as I've never used it.

    I have an older Revere Ware pot that I was looking up information on, it’s seems that the older Bakelite handles have asbestos in them and I’m concerned that you are showing how to sand them which can be very dangerous, if you know anymore info that I might not know on the validity of this please share ( or be careful!)

    • @xetaprime
      @xetaprime  Před rokem +3

      I've heard about that. If I was dry sanding and creating dust to inhale, I'd agree. We're wet sanding rather lightly, so no dust. No worse than washing these old pans by hand. But I'll pin a caution here.

    Do you have any idea what the max oven temperature is for these and farberware handles?

    • @xetaprime
      @xetaprime  Před 6 měsíci

      I know for sure the 70s Farberware were rated to 425F. But honestly I wouldn't recommend it. Some were bakelite, there may be fumes and/or damage to the handle. Save metal handle pans for the oven :)
