  • PNEUMOTHORAX vs TENSION PNEUMOTHORAX
    In this video, I'll explain what a pneumothorax a tension pneumothorax are, and what you need to know about them for nursing school.
    We'll talk about what pneumothorax and tension pneumothorax means, the difference between the two, the different types of pneumothorax, and I'll give you a cool memory trick to help you remember them.
    Here's a breakdown of what we'll talk about:
    A pneumothorax means that there is a hole into the pleural space (surrounding the lungs), letting air accumulate around the lung, and causing the lung to collapse. In a pneumothorax, air can move in and out of the pleural space.
    There are 2 types of a pneumothorax:
    - Open pneumothorax: there is a wound on the outside of the body that caused the hole in the pleural space. And open pneumothorax can happen with things like stab wounds or other trauma.
    - Closed pneumothorax: there is no wound on the outside of the body, and the hole into the pleural space is internal. A closed pneumothorax can happen during a rib fracture, or even spontaneously.
    A tension pneumothorax is similar to a pneumothorax, where there is a hole in the pleural space and air accumulates around the lung, causing the lung to collapse. But during a tension pneumothorax, air CANNOT escape the pleural space. Instead it gets trapped inside, putting immense pressure on the lungs, heart and blood vessels.
    A tension pneumothorax is a life threatening emergency, and must be treated immediately.

    I study nursing and medical science for fun. I’ve always wanted to be a nurse, but because I have a form of autism and I hate hospitals, and some of my family makes fun of my decision to go to nursing school because they think firefighter jobs are better (I’m not currently in school for nursing, but I really want to!). I’ve felt discouraged since, but I still love medical science. Thanks for explaining it clearly, and I love your enthusiasm!🫁🫀🩺👩🏼‍⚕️

    Can you explain why the air can't get out of the plural space during a tension pneumo? I understand that the opening acts as a one-way valve but I don't understand why it happens during a tension pneumo and not a regular pneumo.

    • @NursingSOS
      @NursingSOS  Před 2 lety

      Great questions, Ahava Bdner! With a tension pneumo, like you said it creates a one way valve where the air can go in, but cannot escape causing the lung to collapse, which is different than a pneumothorax. To remove the air from the pleural space with a needle to decompress the area. I hope that helps, Thank you for being here😊

    When you inhale, air leaves the plural space (lungs increase volume). When you exhale, air enters plural space (lung volume gets smaller)... Is that right?

    • @NursingSOS

      Kieran Broadfield, when you inhale air moves into the pleural space and when you exhale air moves out of the pleural space. Hope that helps to clarify it! :)

    So a closed pneumothorax is a tension pneumothorax and a open pneumothorax is pretty much a sucking chest wound?

    • @NursingSOS
      @NursingSOS  Před 3 lety +1

      Jay Allen, great question. So a closed pneumothorax is classified as something where the chest wall still remains intact to the outside environment. An open pneumothorax is where it is open to the outside environment. Yes, a tension pneumo is a closed one, and a sucking chest wound is an open one. Hope this helps. Thanks, friend!
