These two traumatic emergencies are the two most frequently asked emergencies that I get asked about as The Paramedic Coach. If you are reviewing Trauma in EMR, EMT, AEMT or Paramedic school review this lesson.
Flail chest includes multiple rib fractures in multiple places that are directly next to one another. While tension pneumothorax is a lung that is collapsed and air has entered the pleural space around the lung, it gets so severe that the heart begins to fail as a pump causing hypotension.
If you want to understand these two emergencies for life, review this video. I look forward to seeing your success in EMS.

Just finished EMT school and about to thanks the registry test in a few weeks. I was wondering if you could make a video about how to read through NREMT questions and how to determine the “most right” answer… I always seem to get questions wrong because of the two that are right but one being more right than the other.

I had a MVA 4 years ago where I hit a tree head on (wasn’t wearing a seatbelt) and my chest slammed into the steering wheel. The next day I coughed up blood and was in extreme pain but the doctors couldn’t find any broken ribs. To this day, whenever I lay on my left side for an extended period of time (3 min+) I have a jolt where it feels like my lung catches on my rib almost. Could this be flail chest?
