I just met Cora Carmack a couple weeks ago and one of the questions asked of her was if this book fell under the "second book syndrome". She said that it might, but not because of the normal reasons. Her diagnosis of epilepsy caused the delay of the release, but it also effected how she writes. Her brain is working different now due to all the seizures which is why this book might be, I guess different, from the first. I haven't picked it up yet, I'm going to reread Roar since it's been so long, but I'm so excited. I'm glad to hear that you still really enjoyed it! I can't wait to see what happens!

If you like Silas from Sorcery of Thorns, I recommend the Bartimeaus series by Jonathan Stroud.
It focuses on getting to know both the master and demon characters. An excellent series.

What a great month of reading you had! The Simplicity of Cider, The Turn of the Key, and Birthday sound right up my alley! Birthday would probably also be great for my middle child (they're non-binary and going through HRT), and Quiet Girl in a Noisy World sounds like it would be perfect for my youngest daughter. So many great recommendations, thank you!

Kimberly Newsom ❤️ My son is transgender and has been on testosterone for a while now. We’re getting ready to go in for his top surgery consult.

Dude there should be a Silas fans club. I haven't read Sorcery of Thorns yet, but everyone who has freaking loves that character. My interest is definitely peaked.

Book Love and Quiet Girl in a Noisy World sound so cute! I too am an introverted book lover, so that sounds perfect. I usually don't love footnotes in books, so I think I had a little bit of a hard time getting into Nevernight with them. But at some point, I started really enjoying them in the story. Recursion was such a good book! I can't decide if I like it or Dark Matter more.

I agreed with what you said about Rage. I'd reread Roar right before and Rage just wasnt as good. The end really made me excited for the third book...especially that new potential romance 😊
And good to know about nevernight because I dnf'd it pretty quick. The footnotes just really took me out of the story. And the characters just seemed too over the top. Maybe I'll give it more of a try.

Thank you for putting Birthday on my radar ❤️ My son is transgender and it’s been hard to describe. He’s 17 now so when I hear about books that deal with the issue well I will read them and decide if I should pass them on to him.

  • @marlenaisamarvelousreader8479

I really loved rage too, I know what budding relationship you are talking about and I got so excited for it as well!

I liked Nevernight essentially for the world-building and the footnotes. Sadly, I found the major plot twists in the story to be predictable and the characters didn’t really sand out to me. I still liked it a lot, the writing style was very unique, and I’ll read Godsgrave very soon, but I don’t consider it a new favorite.

I love how you read so many genres .... but love your romances💕 I read Something Like Gravity by Amber Smith. It’s a beautiful, funny and pull on your heart book about Transgender relationships touching on issues with parents, friends and love. I want to scream from the rooftops about it☺️ Good pick for Contemporary A Thon. I think you will like it👍

How you feel about Sorcery of Thorns is how I feel about Caraval. I really disliked it but I’m keeping it around to try again in the future because I wasn’t in the right mood when I read it.

Recursion blew my mind when I read it! I ended up enjoying it even more than Dark Matter.
I also bought the UK version of Birthday because of the pages (and the amazing story).

Super specific book recommendation that may or may not actually be germane: if you like(d) books about witches treating magical beasts, there is a trilogy (third book out in November?) in which a female protagonist is a doctor who treats supernatural beings - ghosts, vampires, mummies, etc. Author is Vivian Shaw and I think they are called the Greta Helsing novels. First one is Strange Practice. Sort of supernatural mystery with a little thriller element but more spooky than scary and no gore but also not kids-focused. Anyway, I really like them. :-)

I started Nevernight a couple weeks ago and could not get into it. I was thinking about trying the audiobook but I think I’ll do it the way you did. I was feeling so bad about not being able to get into it... I’ve heard great things. How far in is it until the red church you speak of lol (that seemed like a mouthful haha)

  • @bookishsix

I’m having issue with getting into Nevernight. I could not listen to the audiobook because the narrator’s version of Mia’s voice was not what I had in mind. I think I’ll have to pick it up later on.
