This is not only well acted and pitch-perfect (truly, she’s got EXCELLENT pitch), but it’s *original,* which is super rare to find in a song this well-known. I see a real personality underneath all those money notes, and that makes this Fanny feel like a living, breathing individual, not just a vehicle for a great voice. Very, very impressed.
@@thelifeinpink Harmony opened off-Broadway the same time FG opened previews. It ran for 8 weeks. They are doing a workshop because Manilow (who wrote the score) is determined to bring it to Broadway. The woman playing the role Julie is working on took a job with the tour of Pretty Woman. I wish her luck.
Her little smile when she says “Hey, Mr. Arnstein” has me weak in the knees. Her voice is incredible, it makes the song sound new again. I can’t get enough
There is no drama outside of the press dumbbell! Neither actress has publicly said a bad word about the other! Benko is very good but not a "shining jewel" dimwit!
I'm inclined to agree!! From what I can tell she's got the best of Beanie's timing and Lea's voice AND something else on top that is entirely hers and so incredibly captivating to watch. I'll definitely be keeping my eye on Julie Benko from here on!
I love this. The personality of her Fanny shines through in her choices - joyful, charismatic uncompromising - and the power of her voice just seems like a natural fit to the swell of her conviction. This is NOT an easy song to sing, but her character work is so smart that her vocal talent is overshadowed by your focus on Fanny’s story. (And then you can let how awesome her voice is hit you during intermission.) This is such a masterclass in making a character your own. She decided who Fanny was a long time ago, and I think that her version is so well-performed and her decisions so distinct that it doesn’t invite comparison. She’s just a really good Fanny.
Yes, I completely agree. If you have seen old films of Fanny Brice, Julie really portrays her without making it a caricature. She is just the perfect casting for this role.
Julie Benko was phenomenal in this role. The acting. The singing. She really made this part her own and was so authentic. I hate that the drama surrounding the show stole some of her spotlight, but she was the shining star in my opinion!
I was intrigued by her different approach but when she sang "here I am.... I'll march my band..." without taking a breathe in between phrasea... I sat up on my chair lol soo exciting when singers have soo much breath control and dont take breaths on spots you expect them to from the original arrangements! And that last note ofcourse!
There's something just electrifying about her, an Artist that will serve the piece honestly. She just comes in and brings the house down. It feels like through everything that happened to this show Julie was this unshakable force that has always been there and comes through.
If she had opened the show, total Tony nom! And it would have been that star making time for her. So happy so many got to see her and see how amazing she is. Was really hoping she would be doing the tour, but I’m excited to see her in “Harmony”.
Beyond vocal talent, which obviously both Julie and Lea have loads and loads of, I think there's a lot to be said to what is being conveyed and the energy the actor gives. I love that Julie's Fanny feels more extremely passionate and determined, than concieted and somewhat delusional which is also a place where some portrayals might go.
Julie's breath control is absolutely incredible. I'd love to know if they let her get rid of the weird spoken bits now that Beanie isn't the lead. She's more than capable of singing them as written!
And that's how it's done folks. When you see talent like this you realize that it takes more than just a great voice to do the job. Her acting in this piece sets her apart from the others.
It's nice to see people having fun onstage, like the two actors behind Fanny moving in for an almost "intimate moment" and a giggle at around 30 seconds in ... if they only knew they were on camera! ;)
I'm a huge lea fan, but you can't lie and say she didn't just made some tasteful creative decisions here. She's talented and charming too! Would definitely come see her as well if I could go.
Having watched both performances in the context of the show, I prefer Julie’s version. Both of them are talented, but I feel like I get more of Fanny in Julie’s version, while in Lea’s version I feel like I get more of Lea. To be fair, though, I have been watching Lea perform this song for over a decade, while I’m coming into Julie’s version with fresh eyes and ears.
she is truly the greatest star. I saw her do this, and just truly felt she was true to Fanny Brice while also making the role of her own and not trying to copy you know who.
Great pipes, awesome voice, slow tempo that made it less that what I believe she is truly capable of. She seemed a little reserved on the acting front so that her vocals would not be hindered during the performance.
Outside of Barbra, this is the best. Julie has the face, attitude, and above all, the voice to nail this in an exciting way. The odds are against her considering how tacky the sets, costumes, direction and musical staging are. Even when Julie goes loud and big she always has control of her breath and sustained notes. She doesn't scream it all out without any consideration to how to make a pleasing sound for the audience. She's far above anyone else doing the part mainly due to TV name recognition (yes, there is a youthful Broadway background, but mainly known to a wide audience due to TV).
Saying Lea's got the part mainly due to TV name recognition is kinda hilarious. Hadn't been on TV for like 3 years other than to do like one interview and be called out for being a bitch.
@@toomuchtv5768 these got the part because she’s got the talent and let’s be real. Julie is good but when she was covering for Benny, she didn’t make what they needed her to make. All she did was take a little bit above what they needed.
We found out Saturday that Lea Michele wouldn’t be performing that night. However, I loved every minute of Julie’s performance and I was thrilled by the show! It was my first time seeing a show on Broadway 🎭
OMG that was impressive. I definitely prefer this performance/voice over Beanie, but I think I like it better than Lea Michelle version as well! I saw this live on Broadway a year ago and i'm going back to see Lea Michelle perform in Funny Girl... but now I kinda wish I could be going to see Julie Benko
My only complaint is the tempo. Benko does a great job but I think the pit does her a disservice by toddling along. Another 5-10 BPM per minute and it would have been magical.
This was the arrangement for Beanie, who couldn’t keep up with the original tempo. This video was taken at the time when Beanie was still full time Fanny
Her “Hey Mr. Arnstein” gives me chills. That slight New York delivery gives it so much character and power.
Yessss! I love that she took the time to research and pay homage to the real Ms. Brice in her preparation for the role.
Ehhhh not impressed. I’d be wildly disappointed seeing anyone but Lea
@@ryanb4940 It's okay to be on the Lea bandwagon but Julie is a star.
@@MisterMagikarp I agree with this comment, very well said.
If this was a brand new show and she was the lead she would have been catapulted to the high test of Broadway. What a star she is.
Her little smile between "bam" and "hey Mr Arnstein" lives rent free in my head 🤩
she's absolutely killing it even though the staging is atrocious. so excited to see where she goes after this!
She is in rehearsals for a show with Chip Zien and Sierra Boggess based on the music of Barry Manilow!
i knew something seemed off, it was the staging

I cannot with the staging!!! What was their budget for this? A sock?

I can't stop watching this.... "Hey Mister Arnstein Here I AMMMMMMMMMM I'll March my band out!!!" All in one breath. Practically superhuman!!!
She is copying no one, and it is marvelous! The song serves the character, as it should. Amidst the Beanie/Lea soap opera, Julie is the shining jewel.
There is no drama outside of the press dumbbell! Neither actress has publicly said a bad word about the other! Benko is very good but not a "shining jewel" dimwit!
Are you trying to say that since Lea is singing it CORRECTLY it's imitation? That sound like a moronic claim!
@@m.j.c.6969 there were no references to Lea in their comment. They’re just saying Julie Benko is original. Of course Lea isn’t copying anyone.
