100% spot on what you’re saying here, as a dairy farmer in Wales I couldn’t agree more, I had my dairy review last week and so much importance is being put on hedge sizes, lengths, amount of full trees in the hedge etc when all the grass carbon sequestration is being ignored is comical…. You’re very quickly building a very good platform from where you can shout the truth and make it be listened too. The channel is only going to get bigger and bigger, well done, keep it up…. Ps the tech side of things is brilliant..

Hi Andrew. Im a Dairy farmer from New Zealand. We learned the exact same thing about carbon and methane cycles in my University science classes 20 years ago. I have been talking with people from within the NZ dairy industry about everything you have explained in this video for the last 4 years all of which falls on deaf ears. No one wants to listen. Nice to hear that other people are aware of the relative neutrality of emissions from cows. We are not alone and I do hope more will make their voices heard. Keep up the good fight.

Thanks so much for this video Andrew! This has been bothering me a lot for over a year and I've tried to discuss it with some people I thought might get it to no avail. The carbon capture from grass is never mentioned from what I've seen. Also the fact that on a good dairy farm grass goes through it's growing cycle and carbon capture more frequently than farms that are less productive. The burning timber cycle example is good and personally I think cows are less harmful than that cycle. Letting the timber decay naturally is more beneficial.
We need to harness other energy and be more efficient. You are always moving towards efficiencies and better ways. Thanks for sharing and helping all of us

Hi Andrew, I'm a little late to this video, but wanted to say thank you nonetheless.
Also, to add the climate part of your video, it could be worth mentioning (not yourself) that not so long ago America (and the world?) had a much higher number of Bison (and Buffalo etc?) than today, which have been reduced by around 600> million.
Although a dairy cow will ruminate much more than a wild Bison (I'd have thought) and as a result, one can't be directly compared to another, It's worth noting the change in numbers isn't as great as some may think, ie more farmed cattle, less wild 'cattle'.
    Thanks,
    Christopher.

Also I've seen this "Each person in the US on average puts about 20 metric tons (20,000 kg or 44,000 pounds) of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere from burning fossil fuels each year, compared to 100 kg of methane, 2 kg of nitrous oxide, and 2 kg of CFCs. Multiplying the CFC emission rate by 12,000 gives a CFC greenhouse impact comparable to that for carbon dioxide." CFC's are going to be more lethal and hang around for many hundreds of years. Also humans are producing as much methane as cows.

So typical. Make it sound as bad as possible. Methane makes up 1.7 ppm, or 0.00017% of the atmosphere. Similar as carbon is such a touch point too. It’s currently 421 ppm, or 0.0421% of the atmosphere. The alarmists want to drive it down. If it drops below 200 ppm, plant life dies. Carbon is totally necessary for the cycle of life. Also, if were in a period of global warming, why was the warmest year on record back in the mid 30’s, not now.
Why were we told in a big panic in the mid 80’s we’d be in the midst of a global crisis ice age by the year 2000. It never happened. Temperatures have always fluctuated. Get over it. Stop letting alarmist drive the money machine for all their backers.

A lot! Intensive grassland with high manure application rates locks down more carbon, grass doesn't pull carbon from the soil, it does the opposite.

@FarmTheoryNI I am quite interested in the science of carbon capture of soil as I think it is a lot. The old saying, "Black soil is old land." Meaning it has been farmed for a long time and captured a lot of carbon. Thanks for the reply

So , the question is , how much carbon (methene etc)is omitted by the ruminant verses the carbon capture of various grasses, clovers, chicory etc.

By the cow itself, it is balanced, so zero. Cows arnt using fossil fuels for food. Modern Farming does have emissions as we use fossil fuels.

In Northern Ireland the issue is Phosphorus, from which 80% is imported in animal feed, for which the increase in P into N.I is due to the increased numbers of Pigs and Poultry since they have no way to recycle the P like livestock farmers do to grow grass.

Love the insight into carbon cycle with agriculture ...there is acceptance internationally about global warming, the net increase in CO2 due to human activity, however the point re agriculture being a cycle is on the face of it valid, however there is a huge increase in intensity of agriculture , probably to feed all the extra people in the world..and we have to accept people need to eat..the world's population is stabilising and according to some will flatten in next 30 years due to lower birth rates in asia

Where I live beef is raised on pasture and hay that require ZERO crop inputs on land that can't grow other crops. It's some of the most sustainable food we produce. Ask a farmer what they need to do to grow soybeans,

Good video, without dairy farming there would be less cutting/grazing wich means less regrowth off young grass wich i think catches more carbon than grasland used extensive. And the argument that we could grow crops on grasland to produce there vegan proteins is also incorrect in my beliefe. Here in Germany only fields that are too wet, too dry, have too much rocks or are too steep are graslands.

Another thing that rattles me is ploughing your fields.........i think they say ploughing pasture land reieases carbon is it into the atmosphere and of course those bloody farmers it's all there fault.........ha......well what about building sites where you got massive diggers and earth moving equipment disturbing the soil........if farmers pulling a plough through the soil 6 inches deep is releasing harmfull gasses into the atmosphere then surely these massive building sites where there shifting massive amounts of soil around would be doing far more damage........nobody ever talks about that all people keep saying is we need to build more houses.......we build more houses and it's still not enough another thing was HS 2 the big railway line that they have now abandoned halve way through........look at all the destruction that was causing but many many people wanted it to go ahead yet no real discusions about carbon being released by all the earth moving for that

@@FarmTheoryNI The question then is why. This is a pretty simple mistake that a 10yr old could explain when they learned about photosynthesis. Why does the IPCC and a whole bunch of others keep pushing this narrative? If everyone in Ireland (and New Zealand) agrees with you from the prime minister down, I suspect they will still use GWP100 as the people pulling the strings lending the country or company money are the ones that need to be convinced, not us, and they have a hold over all of us already. I have had conversations here that pretty much agree but say we are being told we won't be able to borrow money unless we 'sing the song'.
