  • Take a look at saving the turf in Abbert Bog Menlough County Galway Summer 2024
McWalter contractors firstly cut the turf amd place it onto the bank
Rest of the work is done by the family through turning, footing, boxing & gróigeán to dry & save turf to keep their homes warm for winter.
This is just a short video to demonstrate the work. It compiles roughly 5 months work into a 6 min video.

Cutting and saving turf is part of our cultural and heritage .This is an other freedom they will try and take from us . There is counties in Ireland that if you want to build a new house , you can't have a chimney or stove , utter madness .

We bought a cottage in Ireland and found out we had tertiary right to dig turf on the nearby bog it was a great family outing to foot up the turf so it could dry and very satisfying when the trailer loads of turf arrived knowing we would be warm and toastie over winter. Nothing else in the world smells like a turf fire we do miss it

In Co Cork We normally bagged it in used fertiliser bags to take it home in a silage trailer..

How many times do you handle it before burning it?

You would handle it several times. When its back in the shed it still needs a full year to dry before burning it.

How many times do you handle it? 3 times; once to foot it; 2nd time to load it; third time to put it into the cooker/ stove, you also get the body's central heating up to working temperature with the exercise.
