Mr. Krabs: Patrick, you’re fired! Patrick: You haven’t hired me yet! Mr. Krabs: Would you like to be the Yankees manager? Patrick: Boy, would I. Mr. Krabs: You’re Fired! You knew that joke was coming.
Billy Martin was always so much fun to watch. His "fights" with Stenbrenner were hilarious. They played it up quite nicely for the press and even in beer commercials. There will never be another manager/owner team like this one.
I grew up a Tigers fan but this bring back so many great memories of growing up with the game and how special that time was. I could not wait for "this week in baseball" to catch up on everything going on around the league.
Probably the best baseball manager of all time. He even made the Texas Rangers look respectable back in the 70s when they were a nothing team. That man was a baseball genius.
One thing people don't realize is that from this point - January 11, 1983 - until his death in 1989, Billy was a continuous Yankee employee. All the managerial "firings" were in reality "reassignments" - Any time Steinbrenner sensed Martin was coming unhinged, he's move him to a front office advisor position, or scout, or even in '86, into the broadcast booth. The press always reported these moves as firings, but Martin never came off the payroll.
@@df5295 Yes he did. He took care of him financially because he didn't want Billy to ever be broke. They had love for one another, even when they were fighting.
@LinkRocks his special assistant to the owner spot wound up causing Lou Pinella problems when he was Manager and eventually GM of the Yankees. Billy was undermining him every chance he could get, so he could get back as Manager. George was listening. Billy was full of shit. They could have won if they'd just left Pinella alone.
George like Billy Martin. Actually I think Billy fascinated him..... Billy Martin was the first manager to take four different teams to a division title....absolutely one of the best managers of all time George cut him a lot of slack and did more for him than people know.
Yes. George was hired 10 years later but retired in 1999. He went on to befriending a guy named Hal who was shallow with woman until the love of his life Rosemary came along and although she was obese, her inner beauty was magical, causing Hal to shed his shallow ways. We also learned that George has a tail.

Billy Martin was my favorite baseball manager. He was always a step a head of the opponents. It is too bad the alcohol really cost Billy a chance of a Hall of Fame managerial career. He was one of the best.
I thought it was real when I first saw it myself, but now I know it was staged. Their reputations made it perfectly played and it was absolutely priceless! One of the best press conferences in baseball history.
😂Met Billy one time. Batting practice pre game on a Sunday by tarp down right field.. Leaned over to grab a ball and fell onto the field.Security was gonna kick me out. Billy talked to him and he let me stay. was really cool
they were sort of co-dependents, Steinbrenner and martin. They hated each other but Billy loved managing, esp for the Yanks, and George loved the excitement and winning that Billy brought. At least until he would self-destruct.
I remember in the 70’s , when these two were great together - everyday during baseball season you’d have to go get the New York Post to see their latest soap opera going on 😂
Love/hate relationship for sure... at the end of the day, they needed eachother. Billy wanted to manage the Yanks more than any other team, George wanted to win more than anyone else, they needed eachother to make those things happen. Say what you want about Billy, but he was the proudest Yankee to ever put on that uniform as a player and manager.
So much was made of their tempestuous nature and their bigger than life egos that it’s not commonly known that they both had a terrific sense of humor and an ability to laugh at themselves.
The problem with the constant rehiring of Billy was because the players got used to the drama, diminishing returns kept happening. Similar to how Lou Lamarillo would keep firing coaches at the end of the season to take over himself for the playoffs with the New Jersey Devils. They got to the cup final once doing this but each time he did it after that, the results got less and less. By 1988, it was clear that even the fans were sick of it and Martin was gone by June. He was slated to come back in 1989, but he died in a car accident on Xmas day. But had he lived to return for a 6th time, the Yankees wouldn't have even been competitive.

Martin and Steinbrener were a living sitcom
Still funny when he said: You haven't hired me yet.
The best love/hate relationship in all of sports.
I think Steinbrenner hated his managers because they thought he was probably stubborn

Old school folks, both they love each other and they had gust to make a greate Real Bronx Bombers.
Guys like Billy Martin, Phil Rizzuto, Lou Pinella, and Don Mattingly are who made me love the Yankees as a little kid and never stop!
I had the honor of spending a few hours with Billy many years ago - a true life highlight
Me with Joe D and Babe Ruth. What an amazing highlight moment of my life.

Billy and George were the heart and soul of the Yankees. Both deserves to be in the Hall of Fame
George respected anyone that didn’t back down from him. Billy, Cashman, they’ve all gone at it with him and earned his respect.
