    When Zeppelin first hit the scene one of the things everyone couldn't believe was that he played the kit with his bare hands. I remember distinctly talking with friends about it in 1969. It was one thing to use bare hands on congas etc but on the snare and floor toms was considered completely "out there". Rumour had it that he would sometimes come off stage with his hands bruised. Don't know if you want to dig deeper, but before this album came out his solo was called "Pat's Delight". It was quite different. A decent version can be heard at the same San Francisco gig where you found "As Long As I Have You." The guitar riff for Moby Dick emerged out of a Zeppelin track called "The Girl I Love She Got Long Black Wavy Hair" heard on an unreleased BBC session.

      One of Bonham's drum heroes was Joe Morello who did a solo where he also transitioned to hand playing.

    Later in their career they used Out On The Tiles as the instrumental jam before Bonham would go into his solo. As @DarthVader-km6ku mentioned, this was also known as "Pat's Delight" named after Bonzo's wife, Pat and was also occasionally called "Over The Top". Apparently, Robert would occasionally wind his old buddy up and bring Bonham a banana at the conclusion, implying that Bonzo was a drum bashing monkey/ape, to which Bonzo would exhort Plant to go back up front and look pretty because that was all he was good for. Ah, friendship!! 😄

      Oh Bonham is far from a basher 👌

    • @misterbungle3251
      @misterbungle3251 Před 5 měsíci

      Some of that is likely true (although I know that Plant respected Bonham musically). In 1980, three months before Bonham's death, Led Zeppelin had to stop a show in Nuremberg. Various versions of the tale have circulated over the years, but one version includes Plant joking that the reason for stopping the show was that Bonham was sick from having eaten 27 bananas earlier in the day. After the third song (Black Dog), Plant introduces the next song: In the Evening. After a short delay, Plant announces that they are having a technical issue and asks the audience to bear with them while they address it. They never finish the show.
      It's not at all unusual for other musicians to joke about drummers being monkeys, lacking musical ability, etc. But Plant knew better. It would have been strictly teasing between old friends.

      @@misterbungle3251 I 💯 agree it was only good natured teasing between friends. They all knew each other's musical worth.

    Yes, of course this was the live showpiece for Bonzo and that’s what people think about but I heard the studio version before ever seeing them live and the groove the three of them lay down in the studio as you said is just so magical! And God forbid, but you paused it right in the middle of maybe my favorite Jimmy Page lick of all time, even if it is only four seconds long, lol!

    You've checked John Bonham and Bill Ward, maybe it's time to check Corky Laing . Mountain was the missing link between Cream and Black Sabbath . Best track : Nantucket Sleigh ride (live version) even if it's Alan Schwatzberg on the drum . It really goes beyong category (groovy melodic jazz feel)

    Multi-coil pickups enable such a fat, growling, fuzzy, distorted sound. Page was probably been running Humbuckers. Duncan Seymour & Dimarzio (e.g., Fast Track 2) for example offer solutions that will also do the job.

    Good morning Andrew, great reaction/tutorial. I wish this was 30 hours longer! Is that “chirp or maybe squeak” Bonham’s bass pedal? I know they were big on leaving everything in whether it was a mistake or not. This made me think of RAH 1970 and a comment Robert Plant made about how John would play a piece of everything in their catalog at the time and brought to mind that when he was playing the congas at RAH he was actually playing Whole Lotta Love. 😁

      Everyone has their own preferences,however, Led Zeppelin always gave every band member their chance to shine and Bonham did just that. Also it really helped the others to get a bit of a break-as I’m sure playing 3-4 hour sets almost every night they appreciated when he went off longer. 😁
