  • In this 41st video from Classic Car ChitChat, you will get to see a beautiful 1979 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow II Anniversary Series! This 5L V8 Rolls Royce is owned by the teacher of Doug Ford and the late Rob Ford! The car is pure luxury and has 40 coats of hand pained black lacquer that even today looks like it just came off the showroom floor. Whether you are a fan of the Rolls Royce Cullinan, The Rolls Royce Phantom, The Rolls Royce Dawn you will appreciate the pure luxury of this incredible car. It even has a foot stool for the passengers so they can be more comfortable!
In case you are keeping Track this is Episode 41 of Classic Car ChitChat Videos!
I hope my Classic Car ChitChat video’s make you smile. I do them in my spare time because I truly love cars and my intentions are simply to honour the beautiful cars I get to see and to really understand the passion and love of the vehicle by the driver (or caretaker as Jay Leno would say) of the car. I also understand too that my videos perhaps lack the polish calibre of great CZcamsrs like: Doug DeMuro, Scotty Kilmer, and of course my favourite Supercar Blondie. I also know that I can’t even come close the quality & finish you get from the likes of Jeremy Clarkson and the boys at Top Gear. I think they use a little fancier equipment than my little iPhone… LOL
    Mission Statement:
My Objective through creating these videos is to shine the spotlight on people who love their vehicles whether it be a car, motorcycle, or even a bicycle…. Bottom line is if it has wheels and you love it then let’s show that passion to the world!
    Equipment Used:
Camera - Just an iPhone SE (Nothing fancy - which proves anyone can use whatever you have handy to make a video… you don’t need really expensive equipment)
Gimbal - DJI OM4 - For that ultra-smooth cinematic look. (To be honest... still not quite sure how to use it but one day I will figure it out!)
Audio - Rode Wireless GO II (I gotta be honest… this is really the biggest investment that was made… I wish there was a cheaper option but after the first couple of videos I soon realized that audio quality is important and hopefully better than the onboard mic on the iPhone!
Contact Details: If you have any questions or just want to chat you can reach me through all the (non-traditional) typical ways through the following:
    Facebook - / classiccarchitchat
    Instagram - / classiccarchitchat
    Email - classiccarchitchat@gmail.com
If you have read this far, then I thank you. As always, I truly appreciate your “thumbs-up”, and by leaving your comments it demonstrates to me that I managed to get you involved and hopefully made you smile. Most importantly when you subscribe to my channel then you are truly acknowledging my effort to help share with others like you my passion and love for “all things that have wheels” and honouring the people who take care of them.
    Thank You
    Kevin

Just a small snippet of information: the actual engine size is 6.75 l, the transmission is a GM Turbo Hydramatic 400 and the car of the Queen (on sale) must have been either a Silver Cloud (less likely), Silver Wraith (1950s car, coachbuilt) or a Phantom V (more likely).

Two true gentlemen in a fine car :-) I wanted a RR for many years, and 6 years ago bought a 1977 Silver Shadow II. The last classic-looking RR before they went 'square' that looks like it's truely from a different era, and also the last fully electromechanical. Ultimate engineering and in particular finish, built like no other car- leather, lamb's wool etc etc. I spent a few thousand to get it tip top. It doesn't even leak oil now. The aircon is like an industrial freezer, and you literally can only hear the clock ticking while driving. You can also obtain the records for the car going right back to the factory from RREC, often including a photo of when it left the factory (these cars were and are special), presented in a leather dossier (of course!). Everyone needs to one a RR at least once in their life!

Mine is Silver on Dark Silver. On a good day, 7 maybe 8 miles to the gallon. But, when you drive it, it’s like floating on a cloud. Over two tons of steel that feels like you’re moving a mountain. But mine has the red badge on the RR. Same pin stripe however.

It's not an Anniversary Series...unless it's been re-painted two-tone (and no factory RR has "40 coats of black lacquer"!), had the original grey/red piped upholstery replaced, had the "Anniversary" red "RR" badges replaced with standard black badges and had the silver commemorative plaque inside the glovebox door removed. Judging by the rear side windows it has the Wraith II longer wheel base but the optional (on the Wraith) full-size rear screen yet a Shadow II boot badge. The filler cap is in the Wraith position, also. The car appears to be a very good-looking bodge that the owner knows not a lot about.

Completely agree, not an anniversary model. Some UK 75th Anniversary models were painted in various colours, but I believe all those for the US and Canada were in Georgian Silver with the grey/red piping leather, as you say. And who would remove the red badges and commemorative plaque? That could only reduce the value of the car. 1979 was the right year, but not all 1979 Silver Shadows were anniversary models. Fuel filler cap looks in the right position for a Silver Shadow to me, same with rear window / door sizes. The rear side window was substantially bigger than the front on a Wraith, I don't see that size difference on this car. I would assume it was a 1979 Silver Shadow without the 75th Anniversary pack. I can't claim to be an expert on the model, but it is clearly not badged as a 75th Anniversary. Agree about the owner too. A 5.1l V8 in a 1979 RR???? Early Shadows had the 6.2l V8, but the SS II were all made with the 6.75l V8. That could easily have been caught with very little fact checking before releasing the video.

My uncle bought a brand new 71 silver shadow, sand over sable, with the black vynil top. Magnificent vehicle, he taught me how to drive in it, and I took my drivers test in it at 16 in 1975. Yes , this fellow doesn't seem to much like a true car guy, I cringed when he wasn't sure of the engine size. But the biggest affront to me was the black duct tape wrapped around the intake snout! But hey, he's taking pretty good care of it. So many of these were abused, trashed, and sent to the scrapper.

The engine is actually the flagship 6 3/4L V8. Rolls-Royce/Bentley never released official power figures but peak power is generally estimated to be between 200-240bhp depending on market/emissions equipment etc. About 500Nm at peak torque. Not fantastic for such a big engine but an impressively flat torque/power curve and incredibly smooth.

Seat covers are a No No, as they absorb moisture & destroy the leather , especially the real exquisite leather used in the Rolls Royce.
Leather is porous, it needs to breathe & be treated once or twice a year.
That’s coming from an elderly gentleman who worked as a saddler & owns a Silver Shadow 2 & Silver Cloud.
The Shadow 2 finally got the rack & pinion steering column which was a major improvement over the Shadow 1. The difference was night & day with the improvement in steering compared to the Shadow 1, which people say steered like a large boat.

No car used "40 coats of lacquer" and unless reworks were carried out the original factory finish was just six. Three singles followed by a flat and then one single followed by a double. The cracking that's obvious is due to the incompatibility between the original finish and whatever's been applied over it. As for the silver, it was a single layer metallic that has no clear coat and therefor has a short service life.

With all due respect, without intending offence, the disinformation in this video is appalling! Here are the facts, all of which can be verified with the RROC in the US, as well as with the build sheets from the RREC in the UK. The owner’s misinformed braggadocio, although well-intended, is truly stunning.
    1. All Silver Shadow II Anniversary cars for North America were finished in Georgian Silver with Slate hide piped Red and Red carpet/rugs.
    2. All Anniversary models had red badging to the grille and boot lid.
    3. The engine is not, as Art says, “5.12 litres and 325 horsepower”. It is a 6.75 litre aluminium alloy V8, and Rolls-Royce didn’t specify horsepower, which is meaningless on such a car anyway - it’s the massive amount of low-end torque that is important. The twin carburettors are SU HIF7.
    4. No, no, no, no, no - “I don’t think in the Shadows [that they made a V12]”. The only V12 engine for motor cars made by the original Rolls-Royce company was for the Phantom III, 1936-39.
    5. Art, please fit the foam filter to the scuttle intake, and also fit rubber bonnet stops, both of which are missing.
    6. Art, the battery cover is missing its slots for the tool kit. The tool kit is missing altogether.
    7. The black carpet on the underside of the boot lid is just that: carpet. It is not sound insulation. The padding on the underside of the bonnet is for both sound and heat insulation. A properly expert-maintained Rolls-Royce V8 is very quiet, Art.
    8. It is ABSOLUTELY UNTRUE that, according to Art, “this was the only time the factory would let you have a silver and black combination”. It really peeves me to hear such utter nonsense. Additionally, this car had been badly repainted as evidenced by the sloppy and incorrectly done coachlines - and the bonnet centre strip is mounted backwards. The tapered end always faced the windscreen, as a glance at the handbook or any period brochure or factory photo will verify. Also, the bonnet lid is not properly aligned. Also, Art, there were not “forty-one” coats of paint. At most, fourteen.
    9. It’s not the “Angel of Ecstasy”. It’s the Spirit of Ecstasy.
    10. Please buy a correct set of wiper blades.
    11. That is not the original radio, Art. The original radio for North American Shadow II cars was the Blaupunkt Frankfurt AM/FM stereo.
    12. The footrests belong on the floor, as that is where one’s feet reside. Keeping them in the map pockets only serves to stretch the leather and elastic so they the pockets no longer fold flush. Such is the case with this car.

There are a percentage of owners of all classic cars that no nothing about the cars and just invent facts about their cars….and he is one such person. I was worried as soon as I saw him turn up with a chauffeurs cap. The white seat covers are I’m afraid to say horrific. It would be interesting to see how the car has been mechanically cared for. These cars are complicated, and require specialist mechanical skills - and usually result in very large repair bills. The brake and suspension systems are two typical areas which are often neglected and expensive to repair.

After all we are all the ´caretakers’ of our cars (as Jay Leno rightly says).I think Art put them on to protect the leather before they got worse.

Not Rolls-Royce most beautiful design, boxy. But the quality of the coach work and the pain work is definitely Rolls-Royce standard. Interestingly, the British had to source out North American engine parts because they were the best, mass produced, cost efficient and reliable. Nobody could beat GM’s air conditioning from the 50s on.

First off.. thank you so very much for watching my videos. The finish on the car is truly incredible from the care taken with the wood on the dash to the layers of paint that still look like new in places. It is certainly an excellent example of what a luxurious car should be like.
I too found it interesting that parts were sourced from North American 😀

Truly the ugliest car RR ever made. Thankfully, the Spirit/Spur which replaced it was exceptionally good looking. The Shadow was not even hand made. The bodies were actually made and painted by British Leyland before being shipped to RR. Many had terrible defects, which is no surprise if you remember BL. The best thing about the Shadow was seeing its production end. I was thrilled when ours got sold.

Stanley thank you first of all for watching and subscribing to my channel I truly appreciate it. In addition your insight really is a little eye opener. For the novice like myself the car is just full of so many unique touches that it really does stand above others. Glad to hear RR got their act together and created better cars.

The Shadow and Corniche cars were the most successful in Rolls-Royce history up to that time. They are aging very well in my opinion. The Spirit / Spur cars were built on the very same platform, just boxier and less sensuous and voluptuous. To each his own. This era of Rolls-Royce suffered in the United States due to a lack of knowledgeable mechanics outside of the prohibitively expensive dealerships. But let's remember the cars that America was making during this time. Nothing to write home about.

@@sprezzatura8755 No need to be rude...RR obviously thought highly of our GM transmission, and Fridgedaire AC SYSTEM. Our 71 silver Shadow was purchased at ROY CARVER Rolls-Royce and BMW in Costa Mesa. Serviced there also.

Wow, you are certainly in the minority about the design of these cars. Even today, and certainly thru the 80s and 90s, they were used in movies. When a ROLLS was needed, it was a SILVER SHADOW, that was chosen..

Collin, First of all thank you so very much for watching my videos and subscribing to my channel I truly appreciate it. My intention for the videos is to showcase the car and also allow the owner of the car (the caretaker as Jay Leno rightly says) the opportunity to share their story, love and passion for their car. Thank you for also clarifying the engine size. Do you know what the horse power was identified for this car. I would love to share your insight with the owner.
