  • It's spring in Japan: Hanami, or "cherry blossom viewing" season. The sakura are in bloom, and I couldn't resist picking up a Sakura Pale Ale, by my favorite local brewery in Ise, Mie-prefecture, Japan. This beer is brewed with wild yeast, so I'm not quite sure what to expect...here we go!
Here is a link to the brewer (Ise Kadoya 伊勢角)’s webpage… www.biyagura.jp/

    _Good Idea! 🥂_

Great review. You considered the beer slowly and carefully before giving your evaluation. I suspect the sakura yeast had a small influence on the finished beer. The head of Ise Kadoya brewing has a doctorate in microbiology, with a specialization in yeast, so he surely knows what he’s doing. Cheers!

Thanks! And yeah, IseKado is an intriguing brewery on many levels.

Jordan, your yeast explanation sidebar was a good idea! I've noticed an increase in "seasonal" beers in the last couple of years (Midwest US) but it is a very small fraction of the total (I'd be surprised if it reached 5%). Japan seems much more tuned in to seasonality. Nice review! What is the ABV for the Pale Ale that you compared this to? That can have a big influence in the flavor profile.

Excellent question. Ise Pale Ale has an ABV of 5%. I guess that natural sakura yeast has a more laid-back approach to alcohol production. 😆
But yeah, that’s an important factor! Should have mentioned that in the video. 🍻

It sounds delicious, I’ve brewed my own beer before but I appreciated the yeast explanation that was great thank you. Can’t wait to try some craft brew when I finally get there、ありがとうございます

Thanks for the comment! Even though the number of breweries in Japan is comparatively still pretty low, there really is some great beer being made here. And the quality & variety is going up all the time!

Here in Japan, seasonal products (especially snacks and beverages) are a really big thing. How about where you live? Do you have any good spring (or whatever the current season is) beers to recommend? Or is it mostly just hype?

Great description! Have you ever attended a "BEERFES" event in Japan?

Yes, I have been to a few of those and they were a lot of fun. The pandemic of course did some damage to scene, but things are picking up again. In fact, I’ve been eyeing an event that’s happening in Osaka later this month. It’s been way too long!!

What’s the name of the brewery in Ise? Adding yeasts during fermentation takes place all the time sometimes with unexpected results. Every batch of cider is discernibly different.

The brewery is Ise Kadoya. (Usually written as 伊勢角 in Japanese.) The best place to drink their beer is at their pub in “Okageyokocho”, near Ise Grand Shrine, but there are a couple of bottle shops and tasting places around Ise city. (They have a bar in Tokyo too.)
I’ll put a link to their website in the description.

@@Jordan-inJapan Just remembered, I’ve visited Okage yokocho. It was far too brief.

@@MaShcode Cool area, eh? One of my favourite places to wander around when I have a day off.
