  • Thanks to the Brown University FSAE Team for the opportunity to shake down their FSAE car! I'm so impressed by the car and its capability.
The next day the car made 114hp on a Dyno using 100 Octane race fuel.

Formula SAE was absolutely formative when I was in undergrad. Our team ran a turbocharged version of this. Although they don't make more Peak Power(because of the restrictor) it made that Peak power from 6000 to 12000 RPM. I was also the first test driver for our Aero package and the first person to pull a sustained 2G lateral turn with a headwind. That car was both terrifying in it's capabilities but perfectly well behaved. I have never and might never drive a more capable and responsive car again.
But also: no 5-second egress!? Part of the safety requirement is that each of your drivers must demonstrate a full egress from fully belted to outside the car in under 5 seconds. It's hilarious to watch.

And can totally relate to the non mechanical engineering students at the end. I was a civil engineer but didnt care, I was not missing out on the opportunity to be on the team even if it didnt relate to my major. You get to travel the country to various tracks and meet a ton of other like minded students. I was on my school's FSAE team. Sick content tedward! Driving it was the most fun I had in a vehicle. Exactly 400 pounds without driver. We were fairly low budget but had a Yamaha single cyl, four wheel pushrod suspension, a working sequental trans, and just started doing aero, making our own carbon fiber, and making effective decisions like smaller wheels (some massive change like 13" down to 10).

FSAE is so cool and part of me wishes I had heard about it before picking where I decided to go to school, because it's not an easy program to get started. Unfortunately, as is the case in a lot of motorsport, money is a HUGE deal and there are a lot of teams that never even get beyond planning because the funding just isn't there. Huge props to the teams that do get it done, though, because it doesn't matter how much money you have, you won't get anywhere if you can't engineer a good race car. These guys are the names that we'll see on the engineering rosters of professional racing teams one day.

If they managed to make 114hp to the wheel with the mandatory 20mm restrictor for competition, thats insane. My guess is 114 is unrestricted.

Would a torque-vectoring steer-by-wire AWD hybrid be legal as of FSAE rules?

This looks like an absolute riot, I wish I had a mind for engineering! I'm wondering, for the students: what's "that one thing" (beyond a bigger engine) that'd make the car faster, but it's *just* outside the regulations for FSAE?

For our team, it was honestly properly trained drivers by a massive margin, but from a technical perspective, likely looser Aero restrictions to get even bigger wings or the kind of vacuum cars that some other team recently made news with for under 1s 0-60. Pretty sure that isn't legal in FSAE.

Powered ground effect would be pretty sweet! Some other things that come to mind are removing the intake restrictor and having tire warmers. Other than that, weight also has a big impact on performance.
