What's really cool about this story is that randy had an open mind and let a complete stranger, a pizza guy at that, jump on the keyboard and lay down a track for that song. Most musicians wouldn't have even let that thought cross their mind. Not only was the piano perfect for that song. A diamond in the rough was discovered. Amazing.

Great one, but most likely not true. From the Wiki: "The original studio version, recorded at Kaye-Smith Studios in Seattle, Washington, features prominent piano, played by Norman Durkee. Durkee was recording commercials in the next studio when sound engineer Buzz Richmond asked him to play on 'Takin' Care of Business.' With paid-by-the-hour musicians waiting, Durkee had only a few minutes to spare. Quickly conferring with Randy Bachman, he scribbled down the chords, and, without listening to the song beforehand, recorded the piano part in one take. The fact that Durkee wrote the chords down on a pizza box may have been the source of the long-standing myth - mischievously propagated by band members - that the part had been played by a pizza deliveryman who had heard the track being played back, and then cajoled the band into giving him a chance to add piano to it."

@@eyevocal In a longer interview, Randy explains in more detail. He thought it was a pizza delivery guy. It was actually, he learned later when investigating for the album credits, someone at the studio who had intercepted the pizza so the dlivery guy would not disturb the artists.

At least Mr. Bachman got the piano player's name right. It was indeed Norman Durkee. But he wasn't a pizza delivery man, he was a professional pianist and studio musician who worked at Kaye-Smoith Studios in Seattle. So while the pizza delivery guy story sounds cool, I would say it isn't completely true. From Discogs.com:
    "Norman Durkee
    Profile:
Pianist, composer, advertising jingle writer and musical director for cabaret theater Teatro ZinZanni in Seattle. Worked at the Kaye-Smith Studios, where one night he was spontaneously recruited to play on Bachman-Turner Overdrive’s megahit, “Takin’ Care of Business.” (Mr. Durkee was not delivering pizza, as urban legend has it.)
He was also responsible for the punk band Helen Keller (2)
    Died January 2014."
Unfortunately, Mr. Durkee is no longer with us.

@@edward8597 Go to the financial records of Kaye-Smith Studios in Seattle. See if Norm Durkee was hired to play piano on that record. I know the Musicians' Union in Seattle, and they would never allow a studio like Kaye-Smith to let an unregistered non-union piano player to play on a session that big.

Gonna have to say Mr. B is either embellishing the story or his memory is a little fuzzy. BTO II was recorded in Seattle at Kaye-Smith Studios through most of December, 1973.
WAR recorded most of the "Why Can't We be Friends" album at Sound City Studios in Van Nuys, CA in 1974. Steve Miller didn't even BEGIN the myriad of sessions for "Fly Like an Eagle" until the Spring of 1975 and the basic tracks were laid down at one of the CBS Studios in either San Francisco or L.A. and further overdubbing was done at Steve's personal studio at his home in Tacoma.
It couldn't have been Steve Miller recording The Joker album, as that was done at Capitol Studios in Hollywood.
Neither could it have been WAR working on "Deliver the Word" as that began it's sessions in August of 1973 at Wally Heider Studios in San Francisco and later at the Caribou Ranch in Colorado.
