    I rode Harley for 4 years til recently. Jan 2021. I couldn’t hold up my Harley due to scatica nerve damage. No cure. Arthritis, herniated discs, bulging discs, Scatica nerve damage. I tried everything to get back on Harley. I couldn’t let it sit there. I dragged my roommate with me to go check rykers and spyders. I sat on several rides. I chose ryker rally edition. Negotiations initiated and signed and agreed on same day. I rode Harley for last time to Tulsa power sports in 30 degrees weather. And rode home with ryker. It gave me my spirit and happiness back. So I rode ryker daily since Jan 27, 2021. I have arthritis since I was 29 years old (2005). It runs in family. And proud to be #deafrykerryder

    The Spyder and Ryker has opened riding for a lot of people that never thought they would be able to ride. The Ryker gives a price point that a LOT more people can afford. I ride a 2020 RTL but, I know people that just love the Ryker and it has given them the ability to ride they never thought they would have.

    Made the move, sold my Harley Softail Deluxe and bought a new Spyder F3. Picked it up yesterday and put a hundred miles on it today and I can say I feel more comfortable. The stability is key, it allows me to be more aware of my surroundings. AND ITS A BLAST TO DRIVE Just wanted to say thanks for the channel and your efforts, helped me make the move.

    Riding TransLabrador Hwy in sideways rain, 40 degrees, Thor throwing lightning bolts at me...arthritis in hands, feet, knees told me quite clearly that 50 yrs of riding, 30 yrs of adventure riding, had ended when (if) I made it home. Sold my both 2006 and my 2016 R1200GSADV. The 2006 had taken me to Alaska, Mexico and throughout Canada 🇨🇦 and Maritimes like Newfoundland and points between.
    My 2020 Spyder RT has kept me on the road. Still finding new roads.

    My left ankle is the reason I am on my spyder. It's not reliable enough to shift with as the upward motion is very limited now. My balance is a bit shaky at times because of this. The spyder is a God sent machine for me.

    Excellent topic. Many folks who ride Rykers and Spyders do so because of injuries or handicaps. I'm one of those who had to stop doing what I loved, riding motorcycles, because of spinal cord injuries. I now face the decision to keep riding my Ryker or give riding up altogether due to the ongoing decline of the use of my hands, feet, loss of core strength, and balance. Spine surgeon says stop now, you need more surgeries immediately (yes, that's plural) to slow further injury and inevitable paralysis. Right now, I'm still able to ride safely but the abilities are fading fast. At 53, that's hard to take. I rode yesterday and right now, I plan on riding at least one last summer before a string of surgeries sure to end my riding career.

  • @friedi1959
    @friedi1959 Před 3 lety +2

    I switched from a Harley E-Glide to my Spyder F3 because I no longer felt comfortable in tight corners on the E-Glide. On the Spyder F3, I couldn't brake with the footpegs, so I put the heels of my shoes on the side carrier for better braking. But every time the road is bumpy, the heel slides off the side carrier. So I also thought about getting the handbrake. I agree with you on all points - except the handbrake, unfortunately. I don't really like the single foot brake either, but I've gotten used to it. But I have of course asked around the handbrake. My dealer said: the handbrake operates the footbrake by hand - it follows: The braking process comes a little later and you can never brake as hard with the hand as with the foot. That is the reason why my Spyder F3 does not have a handbrake yet. For this I now have the floorboards of the F3-T and now my feet are safe and I can also brake - but I have to bend my instep more and I am now no longer so fast on the foot brake lever and I need more force to brake because the angle on the foot brake lever is different.
    I know that your wife can only drive with a handbrake - but she should then please drive more foresightedly so that she brakes earlier, because the braking distance is certainly longer with the handbrake. So please drive safely and carefully 😉👍

    Another excellent vid! I've learned that the old saying "you can pay me now or you can pay me later(with interest)" applies to injuries. Its worth the short term frustration to wait & heal. After a stroke & torn off bicep tendon the Spyder with a 2 inch handle bar riser xtension is perfect for me. Thanks again for a very important vid!

    I had to smile with the recap of your injury list as: " It's a gift !!! " I do hope it's a gift or a hobby that you've been able to give up, collecting injuries can be such a "pain" 😖😡
    Great advice as usual, and for those of us getting up into the fire hazard quantity of candles on the birthday cake, injury recovery usually takes much longer than it used to back in days when we believed we were invincible and unbrakeable, except for you Coach Bob, who inadvertently had that "gift" of collecting injuries ( ouch, that was quite a list ).
    Like many other posts to this video, I found my way to the Spyder after picking up a dropped bike, the immediate back pain followed by a couple of MF's ( Mighty Fine words ) left me seriously feeling that I'm getting too old for this $#!%, then found a couple Spyder videos, and a few CZcams channels including CB3 that ultimately resulted in a Spyder landing in my garage late last year.
    From some of your subcriber posts and feedback you've gotten over the last several months, I'm confident the Spyder will allow me a couple more decades of riding, preferably injury free as much as possible.

    Good thoughts.
    I dislocated my shoulder during the first quarter of a football game my senior year. Played the rest of the game. Went to the team doc on Monday had to wait for X-ray until Tuesday. Doc asked if I wanted to play the remaining three games. Of course I did, he said there are two ways to treat the injury. Put my arm in a sling for six weeks and when I turned 40 my shoulder would hurt. Or I could play and when I turned 39 it would hurt. This was obvious nearly 50 years ago as the technology has grown leaps and bounds since then. I’m sure some form of therapy exists today that didn’t back then. Bottom line, I agree with your assessment of slow is fast when it comes to injury. Fortunately I never broke anything but I have had several major surgeries and I would say it’s good to move at the speed your doctor suggests even while recovering from any medical issue. And don’t be afraid to go to a doctor for proper care. And regular health check up’s.

    Great Advice Coach Bob! I had to learn the hard way. I am a stubborn push push push person and although that is what got me through my ordeal it is also what gave me several set backs in my recovery. Until I learned to listen to my body and slow down. 12 years ago I was injured. I was bed ridden for a few years, in a wheel chair for a few years, used one of the dreaded old person walkers for a few years, currently use a cane, and when the need arises I will pull out the dreaded walker. I use a scooter in the store when shopping as I can not walk far but I am blessed that I can walk at all. Currently I am permanently disabled. I have had 5 spinal surgeries. Also a knee surgery, the other knee injured and hip injured, the neck injured, and concussions from falling due to my injury, I have permanent nerve damage and incontinence issues along with many other internal issues due to the injury and surgeries. I died on the table during one surgery. In another surgery ended up in ICU and they did not expect me to make it, I died there too. I am blessed to be alive, here and present. It has been a very long haul and recovery for me. If I had learned to listen to my body and slow down I believe I would be where I am at now in my recovery much sooner. But us stubborn people do have to learn the hard way I guess, my stubbornness is a blessing and a curse, lol. Anyone recovering from an injury needs a little bit of that I think and positive thinking and a not give up attitude, but don't be too aggressive or too suborn or push too hard, listen to your body and take the recovery slow and you will actually recover faster. I will never recover to where I was before my injury and that took a lot of adjustment mentally to accept. I was a very active person, loved to hike, mountain climb, rappel, horse back ride, along with a plethora of other things. One thing I had scheduled was skydiving then I was injured and never got to fulfill that lifelong dream. I purchased my Can Am Spyder RT Limited in June/July of 2020 with dreams of touring. I am almost at my 3000 mile first service which is a major accomplishment for me. It has given me Joy, Peace, Independence and something to strive for and something to enjoy in life besides my husband, children and new grandchild. I have a towing trailer so I am able to take it on long trips that I can not ride to yet. I have touring goals so I am working on loosing the weight I gained over the last 12 years of a sedentary life. I am down 55 lbs and working on the rest I need to take off. I am working out when I can slowly to get my muscles in better shape, and I am working on my endurance on my Spyder. Currently I can do up to 125 miles in one day, but do need to rest a day or two after. If sharing this helps anyone else to learn the lesson of going slow and listening to your body I am happy to share. Thank you Coach for all you post, your videos have helped me out a lot with my Spyder. Happy and safe riding to all.

    I have a 2018 Spyder RTL. I gave up my last motorcycle in 2016 and thought I wouldn't ride again because I have a lower back injury with sciatica plus I had my right knee replaced and a plate in my right foot. I also have torn both Achilles tendons. I put the ISCI front brake lever setup on just because I was not comfortable using my right leg all the time. I love this front brake setup. The guys at ISCI were very helpful when I needed. I use the front brake more than the foot brake but I still use them together when I need to stop fast. I think the rear brake pedal has better braking power but being an ex-motorcycle rider it's hard to not use that front brake. It's around $2000 installed at a dealer. It has been worth it for myself. I hope this makes sense and helped someone make a better decision.

  • @tripletreading6993
    @tripletreading6993 Před 3 lety +4

    I opted for the Spyder as I was informed my 3 lower vertebrae are basically disintegrating over time. I can only balance myself on one of my legs, the other I will fall every time. That alone pretty much ended my two wheel options. I also tore a number of ligaments in my shoulder doing yard work awhile back. Your slow recovery is spot on. Took me 6 months to slowly get my riding back to where I had no more pain. Funny how had this happened 20-30 years ago, my body would have recovered in a week. Now it takes 6 months. Getting old is brutal on the body.

    Thank you for this video Bob. Currently I’m dealing with chronic foot pain with my right foot that I’ve been experiencing for the past three years now. It’s healing really well right now. It’s been accompanied by a strained achilles tendon. This video has me rethinking my wanting to get a spider Spyder. I’ll probably lean towards a Ryker instead. My issue, that you brought up, is that would my foot be ready or able to react sufficiently enough to be on the road. So I’ll wait a little while to heal just a little longer just to be on the safe side.
    I’m on a fixed income making approximately $3700 a month. Which isn’t terribly but I’ve gotta be careful at this stage of my life. I’m currently semi retired. I worked for 22 years for the WA State prison system. So I’m collecting my state pension and ss. I work part time at Costco doing food demos. I have medical issues this have accumulated some medical bills that I need to handle along with my rent. My son and his family recently moved to Denver and I’d like to ride my Ryker from Seattle to Denver to visit him.
    Thanks for your videos. Very insightful.

    A little late to the party Coach but you have a sizable back library. A very pertinent subject close to my heart & one of the reasons I'm doing as much homework as I can before signing on the dotted line & spending my children's inheritance. Will my spine & wrists allow me to ride for a couple of hours two days on the trot? sadly the only way to find out is a leap of faith as there are zero spyders for hire anywhere within a days(450 miles) drive, but I could go north the day/days prior.. time to search. Thanks Coach, wishing yourself & CoachVic health & happiness.

    Right on the money Coach Bob. I became a bilateral amputee in '93. I went without riding for 24 years. I currently have a '02 Honda Shadow that I modified for me with a trike kit and electric shifter. It was $7k for everything, bike included. I can't find a used Spyder for that.
    I've checked out the new Spyder's and Rulers. Beautiful and safe machines. Would love to have one. It just annoys me to no end I can't test ride one or even just drive one home if I bought one. Why OH why doesn't BRP make a hand brake an option? I bought a new Polaris 6x6 in '96 and it came with 2 hand brakes. All hand controlled from day one. I still own and love it.
    I know there are hand brake relocation kits for Spyders and I look forward to watching your video on them. I hope you can get one on your RT. Coach Vic will love it I know.
