      An old boss of mine used to work as music critic and concert promoter. He told me a story once of reviewing a Journey show with Think Lizzy opening. This was either right before or right after Steve Perry joined Journey. Being in the Northwest we were a common stop for Journey coming up so they were pretty badly overexposed locally and didn't stand a chance against Thin Lizzy. After Thin Lizzy ended their set the audience was going nuts calling for an encore. The crew had started teardown, the band was in the dressing room cracking a few beers open. The audience wouldn't quiet down so Journey's road manager asked the band to go play a couple more songs to avoid a riot.
      After the show my boss went backstage to interview the band and hang out. He told Phil one of the songs he really liked from the new album was The Rocker. Phil replied with "I bet you a beer you don't even know it." My boss sang it to him (poor Phil's ears) and Phil being a man of his word went to some convenience store with my boss and bought a case of beer. They ended the evening watching Saturday Night Live seeing the first Star Trek sketch the show did.

    I’ve never been a huge fan of them, but I’ve watched a lot of videos of them live. Their lead singer is totally one of those bass players who inspired people to pick up the instrument. The dude commands that instrument when playing, and manages to pull off all of his vocal parts.

    • @cheapmusicgear
      @cheapmusicgear Před rokem +2

      @@barry8122 it’s my honest opinion. Bass guitar has been my main instrument for over 20 years. It’s the one that I am the most comfortable on. I enthusiastically took to it as a young kid. I’ve always seen limitless creative potential in the instrument, and I’ve always loved it’s multidimensional nature. When you get good at it, you learn it’s capabilities and just how difficult it is to play (when you’re venturing beyond the baseline effort that some people put into the instrument).
      It’s one of those instruments where I think it takes certain players to wake interested parties up to a real understanding of what it can do and what a good player can get out of it. This guy most certainly did that, and to be singing all of those vocal melodies while playing those parts displays a certain level of professionalism that I believe inspires people.
      Like I said before, I’ve never been a big fan of them. Their live record is the only album I’ve found that I enjoy, but it doesn’t change my opinion. I think the 70s was one of those eras where music producers and artists of the time understood the extent to which the bass guitar can be the “secret weapon” in a pop song. This guy got that, and he had the chops to put that ideology into their music.

Great players for sure, great soloists, great technicians...but where is the band with original the songs, the show? Not all, but kinda in general...we've forgotten how to create a "great band" with their own great original songs, and stage show. Replaced by greatly evolved "single person playing" and

I see several people talking about Gary Moore even though he’s not in the band at the time of this video. Moore was one of several different guitar players coming and going through the years unlike Gorham who was consistently in the band since he joined in 1974.
