@@justtrustashI’d like to echo these sentiments. I’ve seen this film at least 50 times… and I’ve never failed to shed tears. George is the heart of the film, and Mary is the Soul. They are incredible. YOUR reaction is one of the BEST. Thank you for the banter, reactions, tears, and laughter you both have given us.
One more thing: since you love this film, here’s some 10s for you: “THE SHOP AROUND THE CORNER” Another (younger) JIMMY STEWART film and you’ll love it. GREAT dialog and acting in this awesome romantic comedy. “PLEASANTVILLE” … a BRILLIANT film that starts out a comedy, but quickly turns into a remarkable social commentary with SYMBOLISM galore! You will both ADORE this film. …and finally… “STRANGER THAN FICTION”… again, a brilliant film with top-notch story, acting, and cinematography. A beautiful story you’ll both love. Wishing you both a very Merry Christmas and a FANTASTIC NEW YEAR!

With Ash's reaction, I see more than ever a man's story/perspective in this movie. The importance of the father and son relationship, sacrificing for family, big dreams diverted, dealing with failures, questioning your place in the world, sometimes feelings of hopelessness. Also the touching side of how kind people can be, a wife, friends, the community, that can make a real difference for us. Kindness and generosity don't necessarily result in grandiose dividends, but deep and important returns that we don't always recognize. Thank you for seeing and presenting this reaction with such compassionate eyes.

Jimmy Stewart was an honest to God war hero during WWII, but suffered from PTSD following the war. “It’s a Wonderful Life” was his first movie after coming home. When he is melting down at home and at the bar following the loss of the money, you’re not just watching a great actor, but a man letting all his pain and anguish from the war spill out onto the screen.
Jimmy Stewart was a great man, and as close to George Bailey as Hollywood’s ever seen.

What you are missing there is that Stewart was already a well known actor before WW2.
As such promoting visible personailities to higher positions was done as a point of inspiration to the masses in the armed forces.
So while he no doubt did very well, he was also very likely promoted beyond the worth of his actions alone for the sake of morale.

    • @chriscypert8616
      @chriscypert8616 Před 4 měsíci +36

@@mnomadvfx Hard disagree with your point. Promoting from O-1 to O-5 during WWII was unremarkable, as such a broad and dynamic war made for rapid promotions for many high performers. Hell, Dwight Eisenhower was a mere colonel just months before Pearl Harbor.
What’s remarkable about Jimmy Stewart is that he was nearly alone among big stars to demand combat duty, when his celebrity would have allowed him to duck it. If fact, the War Department preferred to keep stars away from danger specifically because their deaths would be bad for morale.
Many other movie stars and athletes certainly got propoganda promotions, but Jimmy Stewart was a damn fine aviator and leader who earned his rank and the respect and praise of the men who served with and under him.

My life has made a difference to them and everyone out there has their people who think so too. We all have value. And we can all have a wonderful life if we work every day to make it so. My Dad killed himself when I was 17 and I thought my life was over. This movie got me through many bad times and Christmases. But I clung onto the message of it all my life. What makes this movie so great is that it's not the sugary confection of repute, but a really hard look at what counts in life and what it costs: George suffers greatly for what he stands for--no adventure, no glory--just endless sacrifice in doing his duty. In trading money, power and status for decency, what does he get? Love and true respect. But he had those all along. What he didn't have before his breakdown and intervention is self-respect. He had to go through all this to realize that the egoist's dream is a scam.

You were spot on about this film saving people. It came out in 1946, right after WWll, and so many shattered and despairing veterans were struggling to deal with what they’d been through and trying to be normal again. Jimmy Stewart, who played George, had ptsd from his own war experiences, which he drew on in scenes like when he hugged his little son or was praying at the bar. Stewart lived to be an old man, and for the rest of his life, veterans came up to him and thanked him for Its a Wonderful Life. It is still saving people.

Also note that the movie opens in 1919, just as another terrible war has concluded couple with a terrible pandemic, the Spanish Flu, which amounted to over 50 million dead in a period of only a few years. Mr Gower's son likely died of the Spanish Flu. People who lived through the first half of the 20th century had tremendous resilience.

This is one of my all time favorite movies.
A few years ago my family and I were going through a hard time financially. We needed to pay our rent and we didn’t have the money. I didn’t know what to do. And it was the Christmas season.
I took my daughters to the library and before we got out to go in my wife called me and say “I need to play you a voicemail that was left for you”
It was some friends in Minnesota ( I lived in California). They had been at church and they were discussing the movies “It’s A Wonderful Life”
The pastor asked them “Who is the George Bailey in your life?”
As they were driving going home they thought about it “Who is our George Bailey?”… and they both said “Mike!(me) Mike is our George Bailey”
When I heard that I sat there and cried like a baby.
And they sent us some money to help us out- it was enough to meet our need.
Whenever I tell this story or see the movie I tear up and get choked up.
They were the Clarences in my
life at a time I was feeling low and really needed a “Clarence”.😊
    Glad you enjoyed the movie😊

No one is bigger than anyone else. We all matter because we as individuals can make a difference, no matter the situation that comes towards us.
Also, Fun Fact: James Stewart was nervous about the phone kiss scene because it was his first onscreen kiss since his return to Hollywood after the war. Under director Frank Capra's watchful eye, James Stewart filmed the scene in only one unrehearsed take and it worked so well that part of the embrace was cut because it was too passionate to pass the censors.

I can still remember looking across at my Mum and my Gran at the end, while they were dabbing their eyes with their hankerchiefs. Its appeal is just so timeless and it's every bit as emotional today as it was back in 1946 when it was made. Generations of depressed Americans have watched this movie at Christmas & had their heart healed. Me included ❤ they showed it every year my whole life & I’m 60! I’m sure you are right sweet kids, it’s saved a lot of people. I still watch it every year & cry. 😂

I heard that the Bar scene where George prayed, James Steward reached deep into his own war experiences. He witnessed so many of his fellows died. The director was shocked of the depth of actor's emotion. I could literally feel his desperation. Marvelous actor!

No professional critic has this on his top ten list, yet how can one make a greater film than this? Capra masterfully brings out the humanity in every character, not a wasted word of dialogue, not a single misstep. Stewart's performance is towering, greater than Oscar-winning Fredric March's in the memorable The Best Years of Our Lives in that same year of 1946.

My late father, a big 6' 4" teddy bear, absolutely loved this movie. He was a hard worker, at one point had 3 jobs while I was growing up. He valued friends and family a lot. When he passed away, so many people I knew, but many others I did not, packed the facility, so much so, the doors were open and people were outside as well. Him loving this movie just made sense to me as it matched his personality. It's my favorite as well. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Also, this is the most beautiful movie ever imo.

This movie is absolutely life changing. We watch it all together on Christmas every year. I loved your reaction because it’s exactly how I felt the first time I watched it. It makes you laugh, makes you cry, makes you smile and feel just so full of joy when 15 minutes earlier you’re crying for George’s despair. What a fantastic film.

This movie is so great because it slowly, scene by scene, builds a bridge to your heart and reminds you of your own true worth, making you want to be the best version of yourself. That even if you have a mediocre life, you can still accomplish greatness in the lives of others. That thing you cannot put into words to express the emotion that comes from watching this, can only be attributed to the divine spirit within you. It longs for what is better.

Wow, how have I never watched this movie?? Thank you guys so much for the video, it was beautiful to see your heartfelt reactions. They truly don't make movies like this anymore. We've lost the simple beauty of selflessness, and it doesn't help that there are so few examples of it shown in the media.
I thought it was particularly clever how Clarence saved George's life by jumping into the water himself. I've heard it said that the cure for hopelessness/despair is to try to find ways of helping others. Get out of your own head and your own problems and try to make someone else's life better, which in turn will give you so much joy and purpose.
What a beautiful message this movie has. I can't help but wonder what a positive influence it would be to society if we had more media pushing this kind of selfless positivity.

@manasurge8203 I completely agree with your sentiment, but it's sad that doom, gloom, hate and despair sells. If the media realized that most people reject this, I think we would see a tidal change (and it wouldn't be caused by global warming - LOL)!

You're so right, I might be quite passive most of the time, but when it's about helping someone I activate so much and feel so much joy and purpose from that.
