Jimmy Stewart (George) was a real life hero of WWII. He flew 20 combat missions over Germany as a B-24 Liberator Bomber pilot.
He eventually became Wing Commander of an entire Division of bombers. He was awarded the Distinguished Flyers Cross (just one medal below the Congressional Medal of Honor).
This was his first movie back after returning from the war.
"To my big brother George, the richest man in town."
"The richest man in town" Ive seen this movie over 100 times and it still gets me every time. Thanks for the review
My mom and I would watch this movie every Christmas. She would cry every time the bell would ring giving Clarence his wings. Mom died from Cancer in 2011. On the way home I heard the bell rang. Mom got her wings.
🤗
Good. Hope ur doing ok.
@@barbarastrayhorn4667 I am thank you.
I just lost mine last year and a bell didn't ring, but when I was cleaning out her room at the nursing home, her bed alarm suddenly went off and there was nobody on the bed.
Mu mum died 2022 , my dad died 2023 , there together ,, bells rang ,, there in heaven flying around xoxoxo ...R.I.P.
If AI robots are ever made to imitate humans, they will all also cry at this movie.
Yes. The ultimate test of intelligence of any kind.
Every damn time.
Seeing the note in the book thanking him for his wings. 🥲
$20,000/yr is the equivalent to $337,000 this year. That's a pretty good salary
"George Bailey, I'll love you 'till the day I die."
This movie came out in 1946. "Do you have any idea how long it takes a working man to save $5000." Somehow that line hasn't aged a bit. That shouldn't be possible, but here we are.
50:02 this actress has an amazing talent....... earlier in the film she was such a sweet, kind loving mother and she played the role to perfection and now at this timestamp in the film she is a bitter, angry woman, worn down by life and you can see it in her face and hear it in her voice. Such a great talent.
She is a wonderful actress. She played James Stewart’s mother in three other movies : Mr Smith Goes to Washington, Of Human Hearts and Vivacious Lady, so that Jimmy Stewart used to call her « Ma ».
And have you seen her in Penny Serenade starring Irene Dunne and Cary Grant ?
Hello from France 🇫🇷
Yes. I found that a fantastic performance.
Beulah Bondi as Mrs. Bailey
She played supporting roles in several films during the 1930s, and was twice nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. She played the mother of James Stewart in four films: Of Human Hearts, Vivacious Lady, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939), and It's a Wonderful Life (1946). Although at her height in Hollywood from the 1930s until the 1950s, Bondi never retired, and she continued acting well into her later years, at the age of 87 winning an Emmy Award for her guest-star role on The Waltons in 1976.
Jimmy Stewart was a real life war hero. And he became one AFTER he was already a Hollywood STAR. He had already won an Academy Award! When he joined he didn't take a cushy celebrity military job, he flew a B-17! A true hero.
Jimmy Stewart did more than that. He rose from private to colonel during WWII and flew 20 combat missions as the leader of a B-24 bomber squadron, and was awarded two Distinguished Flying Crosses, so he was a genuine military hero. He stayed in the Air Force Reserve and rose to Brigadier General. President Reagan awarded him the Medal of Freedom, the highest award that can be given to a civilian.
Look up his biography which is online. Like George Bailey, Jimmy Stewart really did have a wonderful life.
Casablanca is another great movie from that era. Highly recommend!
Casablanca is THE great movie from that era.
Movie recommendation : "A Face In The Crowd" starring Andy Griffith and directed by Elia Kazan. The film was from 1957.
A masterpiece.
The story's about George, but Mary is the real hero of the show.
Greatest American movie of all time.
Mr. Potter is ranked #6 on the AFI's list of greatest movie villains, outranking Amon Goth of Schindler's List, who was an actual war criminal.
The actor playing Mr. Potter made most of his movie career playing sympathetic characters.
Bankers finance wars.
It’s A Wonderful Life is the greatest movie I’ve ever seen. It never fails to choke me up. I enjoyed your reaction. You laughed so often only to then be saddened when poor George hit another snag in his life. He gave up his dreams, but his real destiny was to help other people reach their dreams.
It's A Wonderful Life is my favorite film ever!
Emma, your reaction to "It's A Wonderful Life" was touching and eloquent. It is my personal Christmas favorite and now yours!
Some notes & other points of interest:
-The lighter that George always lights hoping to win a million dollars was a complmentary cigar lighter. They also had a way to cut the end off the cigar."Hotdog!"
-Uncle Billy, being a forgetful type, tied string to his fingers to help remember.
They're called 'Forget-Me-Knots", but they didn't seem to help him much.
-Mr. Potter was played by Lionel Barrymore, Drew Barrymore's great-uncle.
-My personal favourite moment was the dinner scene. It seemed so real and heartfelt . It includes a moment that many overlook. George tells his Dad that he's a great guy. lt would be the LAST thing he would say to his father since he died that night of a stroke.
-Not only did George save Mr. Gower the misery of 20 years in prison, but he also saved the life of sick child.
-Another example of George's meaning to Bedford Falls is how, when talking to Sam Wainwright made an off the cuff remark that Sam could set up his factory there in Bedford Falls, using the mill that closed down and get lots of labour due to it's closing.
The ending always makes me cry, especially when his brother makes the toast, "To my brother, George, the richest man in town! "
😭😭😭♥ 😭😭😭
Another great classic with the same director and same star, Jimmy Stewart, is Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. By the way, this was Jimmy Stewart’s first movie after the war, in which he was an Army Air Force pilot who flew dozens of combat missions in Europe. Some of the scenes in which he is crying are real-he tapped into his PTSD. Also, forgetful people used to tie strings around their fingers to remind them of important things.
I agree 100% Robert. An incrdible movie!!
The last James Stewart biography I read noted that he'd told Clark Gable and a few other friends how difficult it was living with the knowledge that he'd killed innocent civilians on the ground during his bombing runs in WWII. And then later, when his oldest son volunteered for combat duty in Vietnam and was killed there while still in his teens, Mr. Stewart suffered survivors' guilt.
Casablanca, his girl Friday, & it happened one night are some good b&w Hollywood classics
Such an uplifting film! Still holds up 78 years after it was first released. Great reaction, Emma!!! 💯
Yes! Thank you!
@@EmmaReactionsVictor's.
One of my two favorite movies. I watch it every year.
@@fionnmaccumhaill3257same ,every year. It's really is a wonderful life 😊
The string around the fingers is to remind you of something. It works for Uncle Billy with varying degrees of effectiveness.
Stunning movie, tear up all the way through, whether watching the full movie or the reactions to it (of which I continually scour CZcams to find).
But another wonderful aspect of this film often overlooked it that is an encapsulation of American history during the pivotal years from 1918 to 1946, from the viewpoint of the person on the street. And by the people behind the scenes who also lived through this.
There is the 1918 flu epidemic, the roaring twenties, the fall-out from the Great Depression and then the War years. This movie should be shown in every class on 20th century American history, instead of just dry listing of dusty dates.
Great idea! Students would respond more enthusiastically and be interested in digging into each topic (I think.)
The characters in the film who went to war represent different “theaters” of the war, as well as George with being in charge of blackouts on the home front and “recycling” drives. Could be an innovative educational tool!
Another black and white classic - James Stewart stars in "Harvey" (1950) - a similar warm hearted theme.
Well, i wasn't expecting to have my heart ripped out in the middle of April, but thank you...
You're welcome 😊
Back to the Future borrowed the concept of small changes in the past having a big affect on the future. A brilliant film. Great reaction Em!
The goat on this movie is a tribute to director Frank Capras family. Capra was born in Italy. Capra means goat. Capra lived the American dream. He was dirt poor worked his way through college and became a chemical engineer and then started in movies.
The kid that opened the pool was alfalfa from the 1930s series the Little Rascals! Look it up a show with children.
I swam in that pool in the 80’s.
It’s at Beverly Hills high.
It’s an awesome pool.
Omg people knowing who we are is such a blessing ❤
Frank Capra is a very famous director. My personal favorite of his movies is the hilarious "Arsenic and Old Lace".
Ben Hur 1959 w/ Charlton Heston - 11 Academy Awards
The shop around the corner, with J.Stewart; The apartment with shirley mclaine; Casablanca or any other movie with Bogart; Sabrina or Roman holydays with audrey hepburn; Katharine Hepburn and barbara stanwyck are always good. Rebecca by Hitchcock...and of course Gone with the wind! Well, old movies are there for you and you will love them...!!! Beautiful reaction!
I said the same: SHOP AROUND THE CORNER is fantastic!!!!
The walk the caused some noise by uncle was a real accident they kept in as it fit so well.
The strings around Uncle Billy's fingers are to help him remember tasks. Today we have cellphones, but in previous decades there were other prompts for memory, like this.
1941 movie called Sergeant York w/Gary Cooper. GREAT story!
Love it. John Wayne's buddy --Ward Bond is in it as he was in IAWL.
The Best Years of Our Lives (1946)
It's about 3 men returning from WW II
I watch this movie every year and still makes me cry and I never cry.
Jimmy Stewart was an [Army] Air Force pilot from the Second World War to Vietnam. It's been suggested this movie was PTSD therapy for him.
Because of bank crises like these the US now has Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation FDIC which guarantees ordinary bank customers can always withdraw from their bank deposits. Other deposit insurance companies can cover richer depositors.
Old Movies Suggestions ....
1. THE TEN COMANDMENTS 😃
2. BEN HUR 😊
3. GONE WITH THE WIND 😊
1955 Marty..
Best movie of all time, I cry every time I watch it
Thank you for reacting to the christmas movie that teaches all of us to make everyday like Christmas 😊❤
No problem 😊
@@EmmaReactions you're amazing ❤️
Our family watches this movie every year without fail, it's a family tradition !!!
I am glad you watched this movie. It shows that good men can rely on friends when the chips are down. Mary was the real hero of this story because she wasn't ashamed to ask for help.
Check out: "Miracle on 34th Street" 1947 and the remake 1994.
Another beautiful old Christmas movie is White Christmas, a musical from around 1955. Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney and Vera Ellen. It's a real treat.
This was my dad's favorite Christmas movie & now it's my favorite too
the gym is still there and the floor still opens over the pool
the guy who opened the pool was Alfalfa from the Littel Rascals
on January 21, 1959, Carl “Alfalfa” Switzer was shot to death in an argument over a $50 debt owed him by his former partner in the big-game hunting business.
Gym's at Beverly Hills High School. Go Normans!
The strings on the fingers were supposed to remind you of something that you were supposed to do.
Like you, a lot of reactors have difficulty sorting out the scene where it appears George and Mary are loading up their car with all their own children, not realizing yet that they're the Martini children and the Baileys are just helping them move to their new house in Bailey Park. It is a little unclear at the beginning.
This has been my favorite movie for over 50 years.
A couple of lovely romances: "Random Harvest" (1942) and "I'll Be Seeing You" (1944).
Next up: Casablanca. Another b&w film with great heart😂
Some of my suggestions for older movies are: North By Northwest, Casablanca, The Great Race (1965), Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and Mary Poppins (you can follow this one up with Saving Mr Banks (2013).)
Love this. Thanks for reacting to it. The movie that beat it for Best Picture Oscar was The Best Years of Our Lives, about three returning WWII veterans.
Mary wasn't supposed to have all the answers George is searching for : she IS the answer !
And his Chance of a Lifetime .
Another Christmas one that is very good - a favorite too - is The Bishops Wife with Cary Grant.
Have you already seen it? You wanted a recommendation for another classic movie. Must watch: "Casablanca!"
I love that this movie's length is almost the same length as the life of the people in the movie.
Two movies come to mind: The Bishop's Wife (1947) With Cary Grant, Loretta Young, and David Niven, and Harvey (1950) With James Stewart.
Casablanca, 12 Angry Men, The Quiet Man...
Wizard Of Oz, Casablanca are two GREAT B&W films !
Another beautiful and heartwarming film that is also set at Christmas time is the 1947 film “The Bishop’s Wife.”
Yeah Em, this is a CLASSIC.
Perfect Christmas flick.
Bringing Up Baby is another wonderful classic.
I absolutely love action adventure movies but this is probably my all time favorite move
This is a great Christmas classic and i loved that you reacted to it, because the spirit of this film can inspire all yesr round. 😊❤
This is Frank Capra's most famous movie, but he did several like it during the same period. If you liked this movie I would also like to recommend "Meet John Doe." Which is just as touching.
Wow!!! Thank you!!!! 🤩 I’m
This is my favorite Christmas movie ever and one of my all time favorite movies
The Best Years Of Our Lives is about various veterans returning from war, and packs a huge emotional wallop. IMO, the best American film of all time. Frank Capra (the director of It's A Wonderful Life) also directed Jimmy Stewart in Mr. Smith Goes To Washington, that has to do with corruption in government.
By tradition... most Americans watch this movie every year at Christmas time. We do also (wink)
I like The Family Man staring Nicolas Cage. It is a Christmas Carol like movie, but more modern time and more of a love story as well. You will love watching it if you like this movie.
One of the greatest movie of all time is Casablanca starring Humphrey Bogart.
Since you asked of all the movies he made this is director Frank Capra's favorite. For lead actor Jimmy Stewart this is only his second favorite. Of the movies he was in the one he liked the most was called HARVEY from 1950. And like this one it is timeless.
A great movie any time of the year. It was a Christmas classic for years. Another Jimmy Stewart film you should view is "Harvey". Stewart said in an interview that Harvey was his favorite film. The message is very sweet and the humor was on point for the time before "wokeness". Good reaction to this one.
Another classic Christmas film is The Bishops Wife, with Cary Grant And David Niven. A great non Christmas one is A Matter of Life and Death, also with David Niven.
This movie didn't do well at the box office when it first came out. Through the power of television, it was shown at Christmas time and it became a classic.
Casablanca and Best Years of Our Lives are 2 to watch for sure !!
Another funny and moving Jimmy Stewart movie is HARVEY . It's about a six foot tall invisible rabbit .
Thank you for this movie Emma, it was bittersweet. ❤️
🤗🤗🤗🌹🌹🌹👍👍👍👍👍
This was his first movie after coming back from W W II.
One of the best movies ever made
You should watch The Wizard of Oz. It is another old classic and it is a musical!
To my big brother George,,,,,the richest man in town. 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭👍
Arsenic And Old Lace A wonderful classic comedy. Cary Grant is brilliant in it.
Please watch The Best Years of Our Lives (1946)
Casablanca please; the greatest movie ever made
Best movie ever!
Emma, I recommend that you watch the classic movie “Captains Courageous” (1937) starring Spencer Tracy, Lionel Barrymore, and the child-actor Freddie Bartholomew. It’s an action-packed coming-of-age movie with an amazing arc of character development taking place during this touching, heartwarming movie…
Thank you my friend!!)
Bert and Ernie, the two men singing outside of the house on the wedding night, ended up being the names used for two Muppets characters. Jim Henson must have liked the movie.
Jim swore it was a coincidence.
@@curtismartin2866 Since Jim was 10 years old when the movie was released,I would guess that the names stuck in his head as he developed the Muppet characters. I doubt it was pure coincidence.
Hard to believe this was considered a bomb when it came out and onky became popular in 70s because cable companies were able to get showing rights cheap so shoes it alot
Best movie ever!!!!!!!
Christmas classic for a reason.
I love these old movies and it's good to see somebody reacting to one thank you Emma
Casablanca is a must see
Miracle on 34th street is a classic as well
Back in the day people would tie a string on their finger as a reminder that they had something to do. To help them remember.
you would love Arsenic and Old Lace
One of my favorite movies of all time!!
If you haven't seen it you might like 'The Man Who Shot Liberty Vallance'.
Amazing that you made it through the entire movie with dry eyes, Emma!
Frank Capra, who was responsible for this film, churned out some other great films such as Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and Mr. Deeds Goes to Town.
