Over a hundred years ago, a place to take care of Orphan Boys was founded by a Catholic Priest. His name was Father Flanagan, and the place is called "Boys Town". The story goes that Flanagan saw two boys coming up toward the place and the older brother was carrying his crippled little brother on his shoulders. When Flanagan remarked about how heavy the boy must be to carry, the older brother replied, "He ain't heavy, he's my brother!" This became the organization's motto.

Absolute classic, one of the best, most meaningful songs ever recorded. And Allan Clarke, my lord what a powerful performance, then add in the exploding harmonies. It's a religious experience. Beautiful reaction to a beauteous song, my brother.

Oh wow- I’m crying. Even though I was a teen during the Viet Nam War I lost friends there. My brother came back with PTSD and has never been the same. He’s almost 80 and me almost 70 and I still have to carry him often.
Listen carefully and you will hear an electric piano playing along with the bass line. They needed someone to play this part, and the recording studio's messenger boy who played in back up bands for American soul artists in England, came in to do the honors. His name was Reg Dwight, who a year later would change his name to Elton John, and seven years later would be the biggest selling male artist on earth.
Just imagine the scene..."Reg, stick around a bit longer, please. We need you to lay down a good piano bit for this song. Thanks!"

At Boys Town orphanage around 1918 there was a young boy named Howard Loomis who had polio and wore leg braces. The older boys started regularly carrying him up the stairs. One day Father Flanagan asked Reuben Granger who was carrying Howard if he was heavy. Reuben’s reply, ‘ he ain’t heavy father he’s my brother’! There is a statue depicting it to this day at Boys Town in Nebraska.

A hymn for humanity, sung by a wonderful group. I’ve cried to this for decades.
It's hard to hold back tears whenever I hear this song. Was very poignant during this Vietnam war was era, as it could be interpreted many ways.
We thought we could change the world, we thought it was the age of Aquarius coming in, we were just teenagers watching our brothers and male cousins all in Viet Nam all we young teens coming of age and watching horrible images coming from the jungles. We were in a time when the war was brought to us every night in our living room, not like WWIi where you might see a newsreel on WWIi in a theater. The rose colored glasses were ripped we were no longer children

This is a fantastic song, but it makes me cry every time I hear it.
My teenage years were blessed with these songs and fantastic groups. I was born in Manchester and the pop scene was fantastic.
I can vouch for that I'm Manchester born and bred, I was a regular at the Oasis club and Manchester Cavern on Cromford Court and occasionally the Jungfrau, great times.

The Hollies, from Manchester UK named after Buddy Holly, like The Beatles who varied from Holly's band The Crickets. They were intro'd to The Rock Hall in 2010, after waiting, yet quite worthy. Garam Nash, later of Crosby, Still, and Nash, was original member, had departed from this ban by this point. I read in biography, that Graham and singer Alan Clarke went to see The Everly Brothers, on a tour of Britain -the two young musicians got invited to after concert coffee, by the Everly Brothers, as fans, and got to talk about music. Graham said that set a positive example to meet your fans, and talk between.

I live in Nebraska and drive passed Boys Town in Omaha from time to time. its still there and doing some good work with young people. There you will find a statue of the boy carrying is brother to Boys town.

Growing up in the 50’s and 60’s this song was a song that opened hearts and minds during the terrible struggles for equality by minorities in the USA.
Elton is playing piano on the backing track... he did a lot of studio work when he was still Reg Dwight !

Just coming on to say the same thing. When was the last time you heard a contemporary song about humanity and love of fellow human? I remember this song (was a teen) - but hearing it today just brought tears to my eyes.
There is some good music it’s just not so easy to find. The radio was great. Today you have to surf around to find good meaningful music.
You mentioned Eric Burdon, this singer Alan Clarke was also back there in the British Invasion in 1964 with Eric's Animals, the Beatles, Stones, Kinks, Who, Zombies, Dave Clark Five, Moody Blues, etc. It was a musical explosion...

Great Choice... I was one of those guys suggesting this extremely well loved song. Played at so may occasions since it came out. Many other artist have done this song... Johnny Mathis did my favorite version vocally, and that is hard to do because this is done so well.

I love the Hollies and this beautiful song ! I have a DVD of all their songs performed. Another artist who sings a number of songs with messages for the greater good for humanity is Australian GOAT John Farnham. He is brilliant, having a clear and powerful gymnastic voice with a big vocal range. John's soul shines out when he sings. Always watch and hear him LIVE in concert. Start off with his cover of Stevie Wonder's, 'Love's In Need'.
For me the coolest thing about The Hollies is they could sound like a totally different band from one song to the next. You've done Long Cool Woman & this song , now do Bus Stop & The Air That I Breathe and you'll hear what i'm saying.

An interesting story that goes (with this song) is the was a fire at an orphanage for boys in a rural area. This place caught fire, some were killed others horibly burnt and some just made it out. As authorities arrived and checked surrounding areas, they came upon a young boy bout 10 with a younger boy on his back about 3 or 4 years of age about a mile away from the fire. When a man said to the 10 year old, you're a long way off and that's quite a load you've carried. The 10 year old said " He ain't heavy, he's my brother. I'm 71 and my prime years have passed but this is a story I've heard since back in the day. "Hedlok"

Great reaction! It hits home for me because for some unknown reason a few years ago my brother dedicated this song to me on his facebook page. Perhaps it's because I'm the eldest child and he felt that I was always there for him? In reality it was, and is, a two-way street... just a couple of "kids" still going strong now in our 60s.

Graham Nash was a co-founder of The Hollies
Fantastic track, great lead vocal, orchestration and harmonies. Bobby Eliott was one of the top drummers performing in the sixties, you really need to get into their early tracks like We're Through, Stay, I Can't Let Go, Listen To Me to aprreciate Bobby's input. The Hollies were rarely out of the charts in the sixties and had an unmistakeable sound with Alan Clarke's lead and the exquisite harmonies. Good to see a new audience appreciating this great band. Some of their stuff is 60 years old now and still sounds fresh today, great reaction JM.

I bought this album in late 80s. It was a cassette and on the inner sleeve there was a quote that said, it's a good thing this was released at that time because if it was released today it would be let my brother helped himself I'm too busy

That is a deeply spiritual song about the brotherhood of humankind.
When a brother carries a burden or challenge for another brother without expecting something in return is beautiful. When a brother's unconditional love for his sibling is manifested one can understand what Jesus taught about having this kind of love not just for a brother in the faith but for mankind in general, Carrying someone else's trials is the ultimate achievement of good men.

The turn of the melody in the verses is très seventies, even if the song dropped in 1969. The harmonica line is played in a higher register that lends it an accordion feel, like the song came from the streets of Paris or some such. As for the social justice message of the lyrics, the times were much different back then than they are today...
