The REAL REASON The West Is Doomed | Dr. Michael Brenner on Ukraine and Gaza

  • Western leaders are experiencing two stunning events: defeat in Ukraine, and genocide in Palestine. The first is humiliating, the other shameful. Yet, they feel no humiliation or shame. Their actions show vividly that those sentiments are alien to them - unable to penetrate the entrenched barriers of dogma, arrogance, and deep-seated insecurities. The last are personal as well as political. Therein lies a puzzle. For, as a consequence, the West has set itself on a path of collective suicide. Moral suicide in Gaza; diplomatic suicide - the foundations laid in Europe, the Middle East, and across Eurasia; economic suicide - the dollar-based global financial system jeopardized, Europe deindustrializing. It is not a pretty picture. Astoundingly, this self-destruction is occurring in the absence of any major trauma - external or internal. Therein lies another, related puzzle....
    Michael's Article: neutralitystudies.com/2024/03...
Dr. Michael Brenner is a Professor Emeritus of International Affairs at the University of Pittsburgh and a Fellow at the Center for Transatlantic Relations at John Hopkins. He recently published an essay entitled “The West’s Reckoning” -link below-in which he argues that the two defeats-the one in military one in Ukraine and the moral one in Gaza-will have devastating consequences for the Collective West. We want to discuss this today, so thank you Michael for coming online again.

The US isn't an empire and never has been. In fact, it's ever still the colony of the British. The US goes to war in the places that Britain has interests, for no benefit. Also patrols the world's seaways, that are what the British once patrolled and are still the main interested ones and the ones who benefit.

“For generations, we'd all been educated to worship at the altar of private capital's unrestrained pursuit of profit for the greatest benefit of its shareholders, as Milton Friedman argued in his 1970 essay entitled “The Social Responsibility of Business is to Increase its Profits” (PDF). No other considerations can shape the development of production and distribution of goods and services in our economies, else someone will shriek, SOCIALISM! Worse, we’ve even allowed ourselves to become convinced that individuals’ unrestrained pursuit of their own interests can somehow automagically lead to the best possible outcome for the whole society.
As it turns out, those ideas were the owner class’s self-serving delusions that incubated the fatal flaw within their system, rendering it fragile and weak. The flaw has festered as an undiagnosed malignancy because it enabled the interests who own our Military Industrial Complex and other key industries (the big banks, big tech, big ag, and big pharma) to become extremely wealthy. They also became deeply entrenched in society’s power networks. As such they’ve grown and wholly resistant to any curtailment of their extraordinary privileges, even when it becomes clear that they are driving their nations to destruction.
That gang is now discredited. And yet they remain in control. That is the essential problem we face today. It is a problem that vexes all the lower orders of society all across the world as they work to find ways peacefully to unseat the elites from their ill-used power. In this struggle, it is not Daniel Bell who is our prophet but C. Wright Mills and Murray Rothbard, who despite their divergent ideological perspectives agreed on one thing: it is unjust and unworkable that a small elite should rule the world without the consent of the governed.”
Excerpt from article: Ukraine war and Western system's fatal flaw
The undiagnosed malignancy at the core of our system is now out in the open view

The west is also defeated in another less flashy aspect: economy. China has now more than 30% of the manufacturing value in the world. It is now the manufacturing superpower. Its dominating industrial capital meant it can create prosperity for its people and ensure security and self sufficiency without exploiting anyone or any other country. The result of that achievement is a stunning validation of the Chinese model: Socialism with Chinese characteristics.
And the west does not know how to counter it because it is culturally, socially, politically unable to move away from the death trap of neoliberal imperial capitalism. They have driven themselves into a corner culturally, socially, politically and they cannot reform, they cannot change and they will inevitably decline because they are incapable of any self reflection, lack self awareness and find more comfort in a false reality of western superiority rather than face the music of its inadequacies, incompetency, cruelty and crimes.

Just look at our immigration policies which are designed to reduce the white share of the US population, our "affirmative action" policies which advance all non - white groups at the expense of whites, our extensive and on some points unconstitutional revolutionary civil rights reforms in the 1960s which continue to be vigorously enforced, and our economic warfare policies waged on white ruled South Africa and Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) until whites there gave up their political monopoly and granted universal suffrage to the non - white majority. Blaming our abusive and self defeating foreign policies today on "white supremacy" is ludicrous and self delusional.

I don't agree with Brenner's statement that it is "impossible to understand" the motives of the West with regard to its belligerency towards Russia, its unwavering support for Israel (and its growing belligerency towards China.
The issue comes down to natural resources. Russia has enormous reserves of natural gas, oil and coal. China has secured long term contracts with a wide range of fossil fuel suppliers all across the globe. By contrast, Europe has very limited natural resources and the US shale oil bonanza will be in rapid decline within the next 5 to 10 years at most.
Without cheap and easily accessible fossil fuel supplies both the US and Europe will become increasingly dependent on other nations, including many 'unfriendly' nations - principally those which they have long exploited - for their energy requirements. I believe that Western leaders have only recently begun to appreciate these realities are now desperately attempting to crush the stronger competitor nations (China and Russia in particular) with a view to eventually taking control of their natural resources and high-tech industries. But I am also convinced that the West will ultimately fail in this endeavour and will provoke another World War rather than concede their economic primacy to the BRICS+ nations and the nations of the global south.

And, what does it mean with Democracy, the word adopted by the West?
The word Democracy was adopted as the ideology of the West, although they should know that in that period, Athens or Greece was a slave state, where only 1000 men had the right to vote and make decisions. Women did not have the right to vote.

One of the students (usually me) would sing the Star Spangled Banner or America the Beautiful or My Country Tis of Thee. My family immigrated to this country. I don't recognize my country anymore. People are sick, physically, mentally, and spiritually. The whole gangsta rap scene is just the tip of the ice berg. The gov't doesn't care for its people, as evidenced by the shameful treatment of the men and women who fought for this country and the endless and merciless wars this country provokes. America the Beautiful is now The Belly of The Beast. There is no other place to run to. They knew that for all its faults America was by far the best place in the world to live, and the federal government's ability to meddle in its own citizens' affairs or those of other nations was far more circumscribed than today by both disposition and much lower levels of tax revenue. Western leaders have taken their countries into disastrous military conflicts for decades, Ukraine will be an embarrassing blip in comparison to the humiliations wrought by various Middle Eastern, Asian, and East Asian countries over the past 5 decades.

My first experience when i began my education at 5 years old. For the next 2 years before any education had begun. the class would stand up face the flag and PLACE our right hands over our hearts and in unison we would recite the pledge of allegiance.
That's 5 times a week. First thing in the morning. Before any education has started at 5 and 6 years old.... break this ritual down and it becomes very revealing in regards to the nature of the pledge of allegiance. Hand over our hearts is a profound action . Reciting this in unison gives a sense of belonging. First thing in the morning. 5 days a week.
I learned the pledge of allegiance and almost 50 years later I can recite this word for word... we all can.
I haven't been taught what pledge nor allegiance even meant....

The moment to turn around and escape all of this was the moment just after the largest ever terrorist attack on vital infrastructure of Europe, and Germany, the north stream pipeline explosion. In place of naming the terrorist, and using that to drastically change it's policy, EU political elites joined the cover up. Coming with the explanation that paraphrases a joke about the gypsies and stolen train rails. "Four still anonymous Ukrainians, two women and two men, in a sporty yacht blew up a construction on the bottom of the ocean, as strong as Niagara dam. Really, they did it, that is what happened. Nobody is looking for them, because they were just too patriotic, and is that a crime? No."
There were similar situations in history, when the politics of a souveren country turned 180 degrees in one day, and by doing so saved itself. Look at SFRY cutting the ties with USSR in 1948.
But, to be able to do so, you have to be trained in survival as a country. Russia is trained, the western Europe countries are sold by their elites, while it's population is allowed to listen only to lullabies.
And knowing the history and previous attitude in great financial crisis, while one is coming like a tsunami, I am affraid that Anne Frank journal can soon get the second part, "the journal of Amira Faruk".
Fck, now I have to learn Russian, or Mandarin, or Arabic. Look at those alphabets allone! Can we settle for Spanish as one of important languages? I mean, what South America waits?

There are actual ‘isolationists’ - and, this is less smear as it descriptor. There were pre-WW2 ‘neutralists’ but this, like everything on the national scale, was not made up of one body of world view. This group diverged into three groups after Pearl Harbor: Those that got behind the war effort, those that were, in fact, complete isolationist in the full sense of the word - and, the peace movement.
These three divergent paths, today, are the neoliberal neocons (bear with me on that descriptor - I meant to put those two terms together), the libertarian tendency in Americans as a social movement, and, the humanitarian internationalist peace and justice movement.
The two latter groups can and do ally with each other over anti-war issues and matters of liberty - but, are fundamentally distinct and also do diverge significantly in important ways. The third leg - the neoliberal neocons - are, true to their nature, completely combative towards the other two elements (while Democrats nominally support the Peace Movement and Republicans identify more closely with Libertarians for their own overlapping reasons). However, you can no longer divide it up on major party lines - why I call the establishmentarians of both parties ‘neoliberal neocons’ as both terms, together do describe both.
*In sum, the historic difference between the Jefferson and Adams approach is iterated today as the two branches of the duopoly - but, there are iterations that occur beyond that. Why the Libertarian anti-war stance is firmly in the same tradition - while the Peace Movement is markedly to the left of the elements that want military intervention (who call themselves “moderates” or the “center” for that very reason). The Peace Left has Jeffersonian ideals but goes well beyond that, taking it to a convergence of attention on class and race as essential to building peace and solving problems.

People are so distressed in their general life they don't even have no time to support any organization that support other possibilities or contestations of the present leaders behaviour. Basically, there's no more public, labour, civil there to contradict this and leaders have a free pas to show what they really are and which interest they really serve. Them interests. Then, people abide to whatever is decided and affect them and hope for the best until they are just baffled by what is actually happening again and again since last great wars, internally and externally.

Putin has always been extremely reasonable and moderate, and you are right that his successor is likely to be less sympathetic with the West. However, She Gin Ping is a megalomaniac and his successor is likely to be an improvement. Just because Russia and China are working together against a shared threat does not mean that She has suddenly received a halo. The US and USSR were allies in WW2, but "Uncle Joe" was still a monster who made Adolf look like a boy scout.

Interesting you are the first one to mention them. I was waiting to see whether anyone will. Looks like the majority in the US are either unaware of that key force in this whole global mess, or are already deeply hypnotised by them and thus already rendered ineffective before the final battle starts between that satanic cabal - the real vampires and the humanity. WEF are sitting back and enjoying the show both in Ukraine and in Gaza. America and EU are doing all the heavy lifting for them. EU leaders are their devoted conscripts. They have already signed away their countries to the Schwab's 4th reich in the making. Australia and Canada too. America, yes! They have their team in the highest echelons of power - only I am not sure all are aware what that will mean for America as we know it. Do they realise it is about to be sacrificed for the globalist goals and will thus cease to exist if all goes according to the WEF globalist agenda. So far, so good - Americans are doing a great job at its self destruction.
I am not sure of China's role. But in the end, ironically, Putin seems to be the only one that might stand in their way. Because if that satanic cult succeeds, we are about to live the worst nightmare in the history of the mankind. I am glad I am old. I would just like to live long enough to see who wins.

If you have the Right to Protect people all around the globe, you can still choose not to do that on some occasions. If you bear the Responsibility to Protect, that makes it almost impossible not to act anytime something happens that you see as bad. After all, who wants to be accused of neglecting their responsibilities?

Please could you name the underlying theories of cognition which you had in mind, when mentioning it. Thank you.

    • @Gezira
      @Gezira Před 2 měsíci +2

I'll reply with my ideas, I hope you don't mind.
Every observed social structure has a corresponding ideological structure, a set of beliefs that justify and support it.
Society essentially resides in the minds of individuals.
The ideology underlying the capitalist system is the same from the bourgeois revolution onwards. (Which is when the change from the previous structure, the feudal one, was formalized.)
Enlightenment reductionism, good old Darwinism, the conception of nature/life as a constant struggle, the supremacy of the fittest, the idea that reality is completely knowable and mechanistic in nature.
Now completely anti-scientific but it doesn't matter, precisely because they support social ones these structures become "social truths", they crystallize and acquire the characteristics of untouchability, of religious belief.

I started from the perhaps false assumption that Pascal used the term epistemology loosely, rather as a set of beliefs.
I come from a physics and sociology background, as you will have already understood I have offered a sociological perspective to the question, only indirectly philosophical, which starts from the observation/assumption that knowledge is a social construct and is correlated to the social structure.

After that we became new people and we got this Christan culture that everyone admired. Now we rejected Christ and God will allow us to suffer greatly. West is fighting Russia because Russia is stil Orthodox and church is alive there. In Europe churches are becoming restoransts. Pascal should call someone spiritual to talk on this topic.

I hated that policy in the nineties.
I was an outspoken isolationist, and I knew I seemed to be the only one.
Their policy was stupid and evil.
I would have liked to see them arrested then, and I probably said so a few times.
Every policy they came up with was the polar opposite of everything I advocated.
It was some kind of irritating perversity that they did everything so perfectly opposite of what was right.
There was a high order of evil in everything they claimed and everything they did.
Highly structured and highly consistent evil that never broke pattern.
    Utterly predictable.
It became boring in its predictability.
