This is my first year in Speech and Debate. I'm extremely excited. Your piece has inspired me to join. It gave me chills. Especially since I too, am a big guy. Thanks for this! You put so much emotion into it, I've kind of memorized bits and pieces of this and practiced with it. Hope I can be just as successful as you.

Just wanted to ay that I used part of this performance for my own poetry piece in forensics this year. I love this piece with all my heart and it is so inspiring.
we all sat in debate practice and everyone just reveled at this guys talent what a deep piece as well great job you deserve it

I'm pretty sure it is obvious that I spelled chubs wrong. I was doing that through my phone, which auto-corrected it to "cubs." So thank you, for correcting me even though I'm pretty positive that anyone who saw that comment understood that it was an error.

Hi Eric, I've only seen this video a million times. So I'ma senior this coming year, so last year on speech :( Hope I do well enough for state. This year i got ripped off in regionals. I was so pissed, everyone in my final round said the same thing, oh well. I don't know why i"m telling you this, just know that you inspire me :)
I love your piece! I have been doing speech and debate since High School. Poetry has been my favorite event since Freshmen year. I was so disappointed freshmen year to learn a competitor that I had looked up to who got first place in state that year had cheated off of you, every word! I was so disappointed until I saw your video now I have a new person to look up to in poetry. Now begins my senior year captain of the team, wish me luck and thank you for being inspiring!

Contentment and even grateful appreciationat of a situation that society can be quite judgey about, this isnt a commonality in spoken word you ask? Gee I wonder whom can't (or won't) understand the simplistic bliss of this liberating point of view taught in grade school.

That was amazing! I think this is my first time watching a piece and thinking "Wow, that guy had to have written that poem himself because it sounds like the words are his own!"
Do you do any other events besides poetry? I do DI, HI, prose, poetry, storytelling, and extemp. (That's probably why all my pieces suck. Too many fingers in too many pies.)

Except, if the judges weren't completely inexperienced.. they'd realize he failed to perform poetry. I don't know what your ballots say.. but under selection on MFAs it says "is there emphasis on LANGUAGE and RHYTHM? how dynamic are the LITERARY DEVICES (alliteration, allegory, onomatopoeia, assonance, consonance, etc)" and under style "asses the POETIC STRUCTURE". It was not poetry the way he read it.
This piece could not easily win against Robert Frost, given those requirements.

That's such bull. I can beat you with many different non-slam poems-- Robert Frost's "Acquainted with the night", "Fire and Ice", or Langston Hughes "Weary Blues" or Pablo Neruda's "Saddest lines", "Forgive my guilt" by Robert Tristam and many more. With that said, this is one of many slam poems that are not fitting to Poetry-- to note an equivalent and more common occurrence, its like winning prose doing an HI. So regardless of your "we do slam" digression which is BS, this is a bad #1 poetry.
