  • We get the bad news that our old windlass motor can’t be repaired AND we’re being kicked out of the harbor by the police! What do we do? A quick 3-day windlass replacement! Come see how we come up with a solution, replacing our old Nilsson with a manual windlass and a nice install, despite cold, rainy conditions.

    Good stuff guys. Apart from the singing at the beginning. It sounded like Penfold being boiled in oil while being hit by a set of bagpipes 🤣 Just love your videos, so genuine every time. Sail Safe guys. Ant, Cid and the pooch crew.

    Nice! It's a shame they don't make new manual windlasses. They're pretty bulletproof. Which is the opposite of how I would describe the electric ones. Seem to have a 5-7 year life. Which is disappointing considering how much they cost.

    There are specialty shops that rebuild electric motors. The best thing about the manual windlass is exercise, it develops strong arm muscles.

    • @AdventureAdriftSailing
      @AdventureAdriftSailing  Před 4 lety

      Yep, we had it in at a local motor rebuild shop - the motor needed a new armature, which was apparently custom for this motor, so no luck there. But the exercise and less chance of breaking 👍

    Don't see a problem with manual windlass. No issues with a motor failing when you need it. Good video y'all, looking forward to you getting out to sea.

  • @barbroevanderlindquist4128

    We'll it's nice to see that you use manual methods.....you don't need mutch workout beside the boat work. Male capten even sings, nice "maraca". All the best! BarbroSweden

    Buy a rebuild kit while you can and cover it when underway and keep it lubed. I had one of those windlasses good but will corrode.

    I had that same windlass on my boat! It was almost 50 years old and worked great! Unfortunately a lot of the harbors in the area don’t allow you to anchor for long. I had just dropped anchor over on Vashon last year and the Sheriff came around and told me I had to move within three days. I tried to see if there were any actual laws saying that and I couldn’t find any. At the same time it’s not really worth getting into an argument with law enforcement.

      Yeah, I understand them not wanting the derelict boats around, but a real bummer for everyone else.

    There are a few guys around that rebuild those motors. In Tacoma and Puyallup.

    • @AdventureAdriftSailing
      @AdventureAdriftSailing  Před 4 lety

      We had it in at Sound Starter & Rebuild - they said the motor was beyond being able to be fixed, unfortunately. Needed an entire new armature , and it was a custom-designed piece... We wish we could have gone that route, but didn't seem worth it.

    • @bobroberts7758
      @bobroberts7758 Před 4 lety

      Adventure Adrift they are good so it’s probably good info. There is a guy on Valley Ave in Puyallup that does them too just past the Kia dealership. And then guy behind the store in N Puyallup at Valley and Milwaukee.

      Many cities have rules about how many days boats are allowed to be in their harbors, developed mostly to keep out derelict boats.
