  • The Second Reaction is here!
I'll be reacting to The Way of Kings in a series of videos. THERE ARE SPOILERS. It's the only way for me to get through this book. So apologies if you plan on reading it. But idk, sometimes spoilers can be helpful if you're on the fence. Otherwise if you're like "I'm not touching that book!" then this is perfect for you lol. You get all the tea without having to read it :)

As someone who has read all 4 books... you are in for one hell of a trip with the lowest lows I've read (it gets worse than you have read) and the highest highs. Calling things Twists is an understatement. This will be fun watching a new blood read it. Journey before destination, you will get that eventually.

This was exactly the same reaction I had to this video. It was awesome to hear the comments and perspective from someone else, I am able to re-experience certain emotions by feeding off the reactions...but at the same time thinking "you dont realise you are still waiting in the queue to jump on the ride, you dont have a clue what is waiting for you". Brandon Sanderson is a master of character building, giving them relatable flaws and then sucking you into the journey where you just get so attached to them and you feel everything they are going through. I am currently re-reading Robin Hobbs, and I nearly put down the series at one stage where I just couldnt relate to the decisions that the characters were making, there was a logical explanation and justifications, but I just didnt get it. While Brandon can make his characters do the stupidest things and even if you dont expect it, it doesnt pull you out of the experience...its hard to explain it until you experience it...which is the great thing about this series and this authour.

I took it as him feeling like as the eldest it should be his responsibility to to get them out of their situation and he didn’t want his little sister to be taking such a big risk for them. Just watched the first one of these, but I wanted to make some clarifications about the world before you get too confused about stuff:
    - The main cultural context that Kaladin and Shallan share is the religion of Vorinism. They're actually from different countries. A good analog here would be medieval Europe - most everyone considers themselves Christian, and they have that shared context, but things are very different politically in, say, France, Italy, and Germany. Vorinism dominates the eastern half of Roshar, which is the name of both the planet the story takes place on and the continent shown on the map at the front of the book.
    - Shallan is from Jah Keved (which makes her Veden); Kaladin and most of the rest of the main cast is from Alethkar (and so they are Alethi). Shallan is currently /in/ a city-state called Kharbranth that's not actually part of either country. Kaladin's also theoretically outside of Alethkar, but there's no recognized nation-state that owns the area he's in. Jasnah's younger brother is the king of Alethkar; the old king she does a favor for, Taravangian, rules only the city of Kharbranth. Szeth, from the prologue, is Shin; his cultural/religious background is pretty much completely different from that of the main cast. There's also an Azish character; the Azish have similar roots to the Vorins but a pretty different modern culture. Lastly, you'll see Thaylens popping up from time to time; Thaylenah is nominally Vorin, but it hasn't much sunk in at the time of the story.
    - Vorinism is the doctrine that backs up the division of society into lighteyes and darkeyes (which are then further subdivided into a tiered caste system), as well as the division of activities into masculine and feminine pursuits. You can pretty reasonably understand the distinction between lighteyes and darkeyes as a noble/commoner distinction, with the caveat that we're talking German- or Polish-style nobles, not English-style, so at the bottom end of the "noble" spectrum are a lot of people that Anglophones might intuitively put at the top end of the "commoner" group. Regardless, Kaladin actually started out as a relatively well-off darkeyes before being enslaved. At some point it will be mentioned that a lighteyes would generally be executed in circumstances that would get a darkeyes enslaved. In terms of his family, Kal's mom is a city girl, and his father left his village to learn medicine and came back later for reasons undisclosed. The resentment from the other villagers is more of a class thing than anything specific to medicine, but Kaladin was too young at the time to understand what was going on.
    - In terms of the sex divide, the basic rule is physical = masculine and intellectual = feminine, with caveats where appropriate, plus some additional ideas about the two not interacting in "public". You'll see this most clearly with men reading and with the concept of the "safehand" (which is always the left hand, btw; near-trivial spoiler behind the ROT13 Qnyvane'f jvsr jnf yrsg-unaqrq naq vg pnhfrq ceboyrzf sbe ure) - the less Vorin an area is, the more likely you'll have men reading and women with gloved or bare (!) left hands. There isn't quite the same expectation of gentleness and quietness on women in general as you have in the real world; Shallan being shy at the start has more to do with her individual history, and also the fact that she never had a group of female peers to calibrate against when she was growing up. Jasnah's got a tendency to be blunt and confrontational (which is very Alethi, you may later see), but little if any of what she does in this book breaks a specifically gendered expectation that Shallan would have.
    - Lastly, it's worth noting that both Kaladin and Shallan had pretty rural upbringings. Shallan's family estate was at the backend of nowhere and Kaladin's home village had a population small enough that it was reasonable to just know everyone in town. Neither of them really has any idea how things would work in a city, but Shallan's the only one that would notice. Kaladin doesn't have the self awareness, so he'd just keep getting surprised by individual interactions.
Edit: And to cover your last little question with Kaladin, that's basically just a him thing. As you come to understand his backstory you'll see that he's got something like three distinct layers of PTSD going on before getting dumped into the bridge crews in addition to his struggles with depression more generally, and he frames all of this in terms of being or becoming different people. This is also why the narration always calls him "Kal" in the flashbacks to his childhood and "Kaladin" in the present, if you've noticed. Also this story is great because you're just imaging a regular fantasy world all the time and then every now and then you get a reminder that everything is lobsters and the plants run away if you get too close.

  • @ElGageO
    @ElGageO Pƙed rokem +24

Someone might have addressed this already, but darkeyes don't have family names in Alethi culture. "Stormblessed" is more of a title than a name, but throughout the series it kind of becomes a surrogate for his family name. But you won't really ever hear his father addressed as Lirin Stormblessed or anything like that. Just Lirin, since they're darkeyed.
In the same way, Kaladin Bridgeleader is just a title. Kind of a mental metaphor for the new version of himself after he decides not to commit suicide.

Journey Before Destination, Life Before Death, Strength Before Weakness.
A few things, Jasnah doesn't care about being royalty, she doesn't care about station or propriety, Jasnah cares about one thing and one thing only, Results. She does not scruple if something unsavoury needs to be done to acheive results, she doesn't care where someone comes from or who they are or how they were raised, she cares about the results. Jasnah is incredibally enigmatic and pragmatic she has something she knows she needs to do but she isn't entirely clear on what that is or not fully sure as to why she has to do it but she cannot let propriety, custom and excuses get in the way. Jasnah is often far more aware of things than she lets on tends to think steps ahead of those around her, it is not a stretch to call her a genius. And yeah this is a flaw with her aswell, she doesn't really care about how others feel, she will sweep aside things she deems as unimportant or distractions regardless of how people feel about it but it isn't done out of malice she simply does not perceive that she has the time to waste on such mundane things.

I like the reactions! You are picking up on a lot of the themes that I won't spoil, because they get major developments later. Two things:
Stormblessed is, if anything, a cross between a nickname and a title. It basically means "Lucky", and the irony is not lost on Kaladin.
Second, while the shopkeeper is discriminating against Shallan, it's not so much that she's a woman, but because he sees her as a girl. Every book in the shop was meant to be read by a woman. Men are forbidden from reading in Vorinism. Ardents are freed from many gender restrictions, but aside from entering the priesthood, a man reading a book is treated exactly the same way as a man crossdressing.

The thing about the gender roles in the book is that I think you’re thinking about them like “oh these women are more powerful because this, but then they’re actually less powerful because this” but I don’t think that’s the intention, the point isn’t that the people of this world are more or less progressive than us, it’s simply that they have totally different gender roles from us. The people in this world aren’t looking at it like “we’re progressive because we let women read” they look at it like “only women can read” because this world has had such a different path than ours that they’ve evolved totally separate cultural stereotypes and sexism. Their sexism isn’t better or worse than ours, they just have different sexism.(obviously that’s not to say that gender roles aren’t a huge theme in the book but yeah)

you started the BrandoSando universe from the heaviest of the books, have in mind that if in some point it is sooo overwhelming, because you are not just reading about Roshar and it culture, nope, you are getting in to the intergalactic contents of planets of the Cosmere... Sanderson has a variety of books with different written styles... so for example, he has actions books with some funniness: the Cytoverse... I really like those books, the are full of action, and comical characters... or lets say that you want to wash down some of the heavies stories with heist/superhero/action/vengeance well there it is The Reckoners series... or lets say that you are in the humor of some investigation/police action book well BrandonSandon has Legion series... he really has a bit of everything. polytical stories with magic system well: Elantris or Warbreaker.
but here is the thing he is creating the Cosmere, universe... this series of planets with different stories and types of magic system, so it is gonna be big... then you have the this other big big Mistborn series, it is soo good, it has mysteries that are carrying through multiple books, more plot twist that a roller coaster action, comedy, tragedy.
and that is what I do with other heavy stories, I try to wash them down with something lighter... like when I'm done with one of the books of Pierce Brown's Red Rising Saga...then... oh boy, I need to go for some Terry Pratchett, Discworld to reunited some joy in my life.

while i wouldnt say im a feminist, i too really enjoy all the ways that sanderson experiments with the social constructs of his world regarding gender and "race" in a way. the safe hands, the literacy, and things like that i find so fascinating for how they are all depicted in a very genuine way without making it seem overly pessimistic or optimistic. it just "is". while also giving his characters ways to overcome what society has predestined them for.
