The White Ribbon was a masterpiece in direction and writing.
Almost any film Haneke is a masterpiece.
I believe that every movie that he has made are watchable, but not every single one of them are masterpieces.
In this category i would only include Caché, The White ribbon and Amour (the ones with the larger budget, curiously). The Piano teacher is a great film but many times I felt that it was too forced, its was fantastic but with narrative problems
Yeah i read it.
But i was trying to give a justification and my point of view
Its actually an extension to what he said
Haneke will say, "Yeah I made a masterpiece"...really?
Absolutely understand it!
Contrary to popular conception, Haneke seems like a warm person
Haneke is one of the best filmmakers in the world. From an artistic standpoint he is a genius. But there's always this tug of war between art and commercial success
I would be so afraid to interview haneke as a director, mostly if I was a Hollywood director hahaha
All the young actors and actresses in this film did a very impressive job.
Man, I greatly enjoy a lot of Aaronofsky films, but I don't think he is close to the same league as Haneke.
Hansen Ding different creatures
Definitely not...
No one compared.
Yeah Aaronofosky is a popcorn passable flick, meanwhile almost every film by Haneke is like a educational torture session... But a one you need.
@@ThePrimordialChronicles who is the same league as haneke?
It's a joy to watch Michael Haneke discuss cinema and art with another fantastic director such as Darren Aronofsky. So glad that I found this interview.
Two fantastic filmmakers. haneke is such a legend. his films are masterpieces that stick with me so long after viewing it. Can't wait for more :)
This is a REALLY great interview! So refreshing!
I just re-watched the white ribbon for probably the fifth time. And what I thought was a masterpiece on the first viewing keeps getting better over the years. I had to hear some discussion about the film and was glad to come across this video. Nothing better than Haneke himself to talk about his process. The information he divulges in this 10 minute video is absolutely stunning. Every aspect of this film from the casting, to the acting, to the script, to the cinematography, and certainly the directing, is absolutely top-notch.
As you judge, so shall you be judged. The preaching of the parents to their children; then, the children judging their parents based on that preaching. I came to this video by chance, but I'm so pleased that I stumbled across it.
Aronofsky, if you’re really interested in learning from Haneke, he’s teaching in Vienna, you can sign up to study there. As a matter of fact, after watching Mother! I think you *should*.
The SHADE
mother! was amazing wdym 😭
what an inspiring man
this is such an incredible film.
Darren Aronofsky and Michael Haneke in the same room; two of my generation's best.
I cringe everytime he says Hanekee
+adr. marius what a nitpick.
I am a fan of Aronofsky but was disappointed by this interview. "Do you know who did it?" "Are they telling the truth?". These are just shallow questions that don't really add anything to the movie, and in fact if Haneke gave clear answers to them he would be be destroying the whole point of the film which is to make the audience decide for themselves what the truth is.
I think asking if Haneke's writing process involves deciding a definitive diagetic answer then omitting it in the film vs never settling on an answer in the writing process isn't a shallow question, it has merit.
Yeah, I was disappointed too, specially since he prefaced it with "and now the big question". But on the other hand, he had just watched "the white ribbon" a day before and was mulling over it as an expectator. I watched it recently and I was the same too. If you listen to his interviews, it becomes more clear what are the topics and what he wanted to convey. But the movie itself leaves plenty loose ends and cannot definitely say "twas the kids". Hanecke creates and makes enough space for variables and none leaves you satisfied. Aronofsky is basically fangirling here, and I get it.
Yeah childish questions
This the most wonderful film of all time.
Great great movie!! saw it yesterday and as a Haneke fan I think he has done even better than funny games or the pianist.
My thoughts exactly!!
And then "Mother" was born.
*Mother!
"Do you know who did it?" ZOOM IN!!!!!!!
I didn't get that part. How can he come up with something and not know who did it? Tarantino described the same thing (much smaller scale - if the question here is about the various attacks which, I guess, are the whole film - didn't watch it yet) with the poisoned coffee. Especially after the intro, in the later stages or even mid-point of the film.
Alexis Papageorgiou it’s actually pretty obvious who did it, the film implied the answer with details which was pretty clear after several times of watching as far as I’m concerned
@@neve1924 I didn't see the film so I cannot contribute, but if you're referring to my comment, I retract it now. I never thought about character secrets even from the author but ironically I'm now working on a script that forced me to do the exact same thing. It's brilliant.
Haneke and Aronofsky are easily two of the greatest filmmakers to ever live
@anderzom well I just saw 'the white ribbon' and must say that i was hooked from minute one -- excellent film. And to answer your question: it's my humble opinion to think that the doctor was right to blame the kids, but i think that the father couldn't stand the fact that his method with the white ribbon doesn't work -- and in a catholic matter 'it's better to never talk about things, yet better keep indoors'. The firsttime we see the narrative character fishing, he meets the boy (martin)...
@1533Montaigne hahahah actually that info it was for a while in wikipedia
Why are people hating on Darren, my man has made two of the best pictures ever(RFAD and black swan), arguably the fountain, that surely puts him at the top of directors even tho haneke it number 1
A genius interviewing another genius!
he actually asked him 'who did it' ........ what
@randomgal wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Can someone explain how that guy in the middle translated without talking?
Editing
@lordgumboot - That question was asked out of humor for Haneke, Aronofsky knows what he's doing - as an artist he's an observer. If his films are more evident in regards to their influences, it's not because he "lacks the skill", it's because he's a romantic. He (like Martin Scorsese and other filmmakers) loves film, like Scorsese, Polanski, Coppola, Spielberg and is more than capable of taking what's inspired him and making something completely his own - see "Pi" and "The Wrestler".
@javajavajavalala
I met him today. He came to my school together with the girl that played Eva.
@rakeshgopinath Well, let's not go all TOO much into pointing fingers on who influenced who. I think Haneke's Cache stole a bit from David Lynch's Lost Highway, despite being one of my fave films ever.
At least Aaronofsky, like Tarantino, knows how to steal only from the best. The problem is when people steal from the mediocre, which is most of Hollywood.
Haha good thing I've already seen this! He totally spoils the plot in the first minute and a half!
Shame US never embraced his cinema.
2:01 whats the name of that kid??
he looks like Eustace, the dragon in the movie Narnia
thanx in advance
Hanek-y..
Das Weiße Band is the best movie he's ever made.
@anderzom ....continuing first reply ...trying to get killed by God, but The Lord won't kill him -- so the boy still thinks he must be a good person -- as long as God won't kill them, the kids can go all the way! at least that's my first opinion...
Even Aronofsky cannot help but pull Haneke into surface-level questions like "Who is guilty?" and "Are the children fooling the teacher?" yet Aronofsky, in his mind, absolves himself of blame by remarking that just one scene from a Haneke film contains more complexity than entire Hollywood productions. Of course, Aronofsky is right in this observation, but it reflects poorly on Aronofsky that he offers this praise towards Haneke as an attempt to relieve himself of the embarrassment of choosing to interface with Haneke at such a shallow level. It's entirely possible that Aronofsky had no say in what the questions would be, yet wouldn't HBO producers AND Aronofsky research other interviews with Haneke to see the depth at which he is willing to discuss his work? This interview had great potential and it is entertaining but it failed to reach as high as it could have.
@diegorosd really?? why??? I heard is too long and slow, wtf is the plot about??
I heard haneke father was a SS official
@arbide2
This is with Pulp Fiction and Dogville the best movie of the last 20 years.
It always surprises me that Haneke never speaks English. Of course, he's not obliged to speak English, but he's fluent in German and French so I would assume he speaks English too.
Aronofsky's out of his depth and completely lost. Why did he ask him " do YOU know who did it? " ? I don't think he understood it at all if he thinks that's a sensible question to ask, or that who did it even matters. You can see him try to not look like he's taking notes mentally, whilst simultaneously planning to steal every idea. He's just not got the skill or subtlety, which is why you can play spot the "reference" so easily with his efforts. Repulsion/Black Swan is an easy one to begin w.
Why spoil the entire movie? It was a great reveal to me when (spoilers)
they said world war 1 about to break out, and the thing with the children wasn't something I saw coming either. I feel sad that people would have seen this before the movie and not enjoyed the way Haneke reveals this information and all the tension is ruined for first time viewers :/
American agent for Hollywood tries to seduce Haneke inti a metaphorical contract.
the boy who plays martin is hot
a child?
Watch me the prize award at Cannes by throwing the theme of fascism in my film...
You definitely don't deserve the award for best YT comment in the "written English" category.
Aronofsky made me sick with his last films, too bad his taste became pretentious.
Haneke is the definition of an epistemologically compromised pseudo intellectual
Please explain
again just words. i dont think you know what any of this means
ppwalk05, none of what you said has any follow up or reason for doubt. You might as well have said he's the Flying Dutchman.
max bauer Don't feed the troll, mate. This is the same moronic idiot that posted the exact same thing on several of Kiarostami's interviews comment section.
This pathetic troll literally lives to talk shit about Haneke. He’s obviously a little man with lots of issues and no life. And, yeah, please DFTT.
