    As for me, this mod is legendary. I am a huge fan of S.T.A.L.K.E.R builds, so I really enjoyed Oblivion Lost Remake.
    For peoples from Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and other post-USSR countries atmosphere of this mod is unmatchable. Soviet music on a radio, very green flora with mostly dark weather, dark ambient which always make you feel uncomfortable, much smaller count of stalkers and old levels which seems creepier and at the same time something familiar and nostalgic. All of this combines in the strongest atmospheres I have ever feel in games.
    Shadow of Chernobyl is my favourite game in the series because of its good lore, story and awesome dark atmosphere, and OLR makes me think that SoC would be even better, if it saved some best ideas from Oblivion Lost.
    And yes, I strongly agree that final hour of OLR is complete thrash which for me was even worse due to a bug then I was forced to drive from Cordon to CNPP TWICE. Well, at least I have enough time to enjoy "Тихий огонёк" while driving on the Niva.
    Still, ORL is my favourite mod and I hope that OLR 3.0 fixes most issues and add more content from concept documents.
    Great video, this is always interesting to listen others thoughts about S.T.A.L.K.E.R from another half of the Earth

    I would say it is worth playing, but than again, what i played was the ' 'Vector of Alienation' ' add-on of this mod (yes, it's a mod of a mod). This version was far, FAR more balanced than the 2.5 one, on top of improving the storytelling/writting and making changes here and there in the quest design to make the progression flow smoother and avoid bactracking too often. If anything, this is the version that i would recommand if anyone is interest in a version of Oblivion Lost that seem genuine/professional.
    On a different note, in the last few days, a prototype build of Stalker 2 (from 2011) was finally leaked online. This now open the floodgate to the possibility of fan work in the vein of a new Oblivion Lost Remake kind of project.

    @CrossHolder92 Před 2 lety +8

    Good review. A bit harsh, but on point.
    Since the mod bugged out for you with the true ending, I just finished it, and here's what happens:
    (Spoilers, ofc)
    In the Sarcophagus, close to the POC Monolith, Journalist says that it's a lie and that there's a teleport in that room that will take you to the actual lab were the secret is.
    You jump around a little, it's not hard to find, sticks out with its green color. You enter the teleport, but it takes you to the very begging of Cordon, behind the Military CP.
    Journalist says that not all went according to plan, and that you now have to go back to the Radar Lab and disable some shit, he gives you the code. Also says that "Stalker don't really like you now."
    Everyone is hostile, loners too, (But Monolith is friendly, since the game joined you to their faction for some reason) so I just make a run for it back to the Radar, outrunning mutants and dudes. (In Bar, all are hostile as well, and if you enter where Barkeep is, everyone starts shooting)
    I go there, disable it, then back to CNPP, and to the Generators map. From here it's pretty straightforward, shoot some Zombified experts, enter the lab (A little bit of a maze it's made to be), you find the C-consciousness fellows, then it's the standard choice- join them or no.
    If you join them, it's the end, if not, a ton of mutants spawn, I killed just the Pyrogeist and made a run outside. (Since it said the quest was completed) There like 5-6 Loners (now neutral again) with guns pointed at you, and in the middle of them a scientists. You talk to him, and it ends the game with the Destroy CC ending.
    No freeplay in any ending, and the cutscenes are not vanilla ones.
    Translated Russian text at the endings:
    If you join CC: The charge of gravitational fields is decreasing, the Zone is calming down, mutants are dying.
    If you destroy them: The destruction of CC led to irreversible consequences. Anomalous activity increased. The International Community is closely watching the changing situation of the Zone. Clouds are forming over the Zone, and it has increased its territory.

    • @rostokk2706
      @rostokk2706  Před 2 lety +3

      huh, thought it would be much different. a lot of effort (from the player) for basically the vanilla desrtoy the CC ending.

    • @CrossHolder92
      @CrossHolder92 Před 2 lety +3

      @@rostokk2706 Btw, there's one more ending, it's not telegraphed in any way, so I missed it the first time, only got it after seeing some other guy having a different ending cutscene on CZcams.
      Basically, all you do is use a different exit after you kill the C-consciousness. (It's in the same room, but no markers or hints)
      It just shows a montage of the Player going to the exit of the Zone and being met with a bunch of military choppers, then a mix of still shots and some animations while the voiceover of the vanilla true ending plays.
      It's never explained why does using a different exit change the cutscene, but there you have it.
      It's possible that the mod for this mod, Vector of Alienation, fixes most of these issues, as it's imagined as being a rebalaincing of the gameplay and a rewrite of the story.

  • @wowsnav
    @wowsnav Před rokem +3

    I just beat this, but just like Lost Alpha, I don't think I will ever play this again. It's a nice "Vanilla+" based on the old design documents, but it has some major flaws:
    -MASSIVE amounts of mutant spawns. Packs of 20 dogs charging you are not that rare.
    -Bloodsuckers are enormous bullet sponges, WAY tougher than anybody in an exosuit, and multiple headshots with heavy armor piercing or hollowpoint weapons don't matter and they still take loads of damage to bring even one down. There are several moments in the game where you get attacked by 3+ which is an utter nightmare, and not the fun kind
    -Overuse of enemy BTR's the further you get in the game (and one single BTR takes 4-5 RPG rockets or ~12 VOG-25 grenades to destroy, there are 3 of them at the end of Pripyat and then 2 or 3 more at the CNPP entrance)
    -Helicopter rocket explosions going through heavy, solid cover and instantly killing you
    -Annoying backtracking quests, especially at the end of the game when you get dropped back in the cordon but are now hostile to everybody except monolith, and have to fight your way back through the ENTIRE ZONE up to the Generators. Don't have enough supplies to do that? Better load a previous save and bring more supplies, since you can't trade with ANYBODY after this point!
    -Many quests have no description whatsoever, and the description you get in dialogue is not always very clear on where you should be doing something
    -Odd balancing of certain ammo values: 7.62x54r ammo was costing me ~90 per box, whereas 5.45x39 "newbie ammo" which is worse than 7.62x54r was over 2x as much at 200 per box. This made buying hundreds of rounds relatively cheap, even shotgun buckshot was more expensive. Not really as bad as any of the other things I listed, but still odd. That 7.62 ammo was killing exosuit guys with ~5 bodyshots, yet a full 45 round magazine wouldn't kill a single bloodsucker. Fuck bloodsuckers in OLR.
    That being said, apparently they've been working on OLR 3.0 for years and it's supposed to be a big update, but if they don't fix these issues, I'd much rather spend my time playing something better, like OGSE 0692 or something based on AMK.

    You were kind of lucky with that Journalist quest bugging out. I actually did it, and what I got was peak of russian game design in form of:
    spoilers below (kinda)
    Jumping into teleporter in the Sarcophagus, getting teleported to Cordon (the gate at the south of southern checkpoint), having to run from there to Radar underground, then to CNPP and from there to Generators, where you encounter exoskeleton zombies that take several headshots to kill. The warlab itself is a breeze, except at the end, where C-Con throws bunch of mutants at you.
    Also, you are monolith faction member for some reason during the whole thing, so the whole zone (except monolith ofc), wants to kill you.

      @@rostokk2706 Yeah, there's also a "sidequest" where some sort of paranormal being calls you back to Cordon. When you visit it, you have some sort of level you walk on that it's supposed to be like a dream/nightmare, and you loot the minigun, Not really worth tavelling all the way back south, but it was very creepy.
      Personally I enjoyed all the crazy stuff thrown in there, even if it's a lot of nonsense. If you wan to try Vector of Alienation, its a version of OLR where the modder cut out all the crazy things like helicopter or BTR fights, some anomalies, and scripted encounters and quests, you know, "the bullshit" you mentioned. Removed all the graphical options for stability. Removed some climbing. Which is very strange because it actually made the CNPP worse than OLR. Anyway I wish it didn't cut so much from the gameplay, but the strength of Vector is that it completely rewrites the dialogue, it's quality and has some insane endings that are actually in english so you understand them.

    I've only ever played two versions of Oblivion Lost, OL2.2 (from 2008 to 2011) and OL2010 (from 2011 to 2021), and I thoroughly enjoyjoy'd both of them. OL2.5 looks a lot like Lost Alpha, which means it was probably based on Build 1935 or older.
    1:01 Wasn't he originally missing his left hand? I always thought he looked like Rodney Dangerfield.
    2:11 Cordon map looks like it was based on Build 1935 (see also Lost Alpha).
    7:20 An SVU with the scope off, but the rear sight is folded?! Why?! Maybe they just changed the rear sight. What does it look like when you aim it? Do the sights line up right? I don't see how they could since a bullpup requires elevated sights for the sake of human ergonomics.
    8:44 Are choppers actually affected by small arms fire? They shouldn't be. Defeats the whole point of their armor. It should require either a rocket with a 93mm HEAT warhead (which is NOT an OG-7V, btw, since that has a 40mm HE-frag warhead IRL) or the penetrative capabilities of a gauss round. Either way, shot placement would make a huge difference.
    9:15 Why are the weapons so weak?! Two 40-mils should be able to take out that entire zombie horde! I noticed that two 40-mils were enough to take down a pseudogiant. In Oblivion Lost 2.2 and Oblivion Lost 2010, pseudogiants and chimeras could withstand quite a few direct hits from 40-mils, but they were weak to plain ol' buckshot. Four shots to the face would take down a pseudogiant at a room-length distance even with a sawed-off. Chimeras would take less than that, and it was fun to blast them out of the air as they lept at you (see also snorks).
    10:30 So it's a tool but not a weapon. At the very least, it could be fun to use it to rearrange the environs. I can spend hours doing that in Half-Life 2!

    OLR is the only faithful recreation of OG Stalker. The mod also has the best atmosphere out of any SoC or CoP mod out there by a longshot, nothing comes even close. You said it suffers from low-res textures but I disagree with you on that completely. The textures are lower res but they look superb and are packed with lots of detail. They match the environments perfectly and nothing feels out of place. Meanwhile the HD textures you usually find in other mods are 2K or even 4K and yet look bland as hell. Good textures are not about resolution, they're about artstyle.

    Having Just come back from the end screen of Oblivion lost remake I can say this:
    *You didn't go hard enough on this mod mate*
    In a feat of cruel Irony I've had some of the WORST and some of the BEST Stalker experiences in this mod. The stamina+carryweight abuse meant that I didn't have to stress
    over being constantly encumbered like in other stalker mods/games. For the first time i felt like a proper stalker, where I went around looking at every nook and cranny in search of something
    and was very frequently rewarded for it (something I haven't seen in others)
    On the other hand you have to waste time not only by running around like a headless chicken, but also because some quests are not even marked/acknowledged by your PDA, and those that are barely have a fucking indicator on where to go. Ok here's an example, Barkeep tasks you to go get an "Improved vintorez/ASSval," but there is also a clear sky member in there who gives you a task to get some McGuffin. You can see he has a quest NPC marker so you assume you have to turn the McGuffin in. WRONG. The moment you take that item an army of mutants will spawn that will proceed to kill the clear sky member. Now you are stuck thinking that the quest npc is dead because it still has a marker on him and maybe the quest is bugged. NOPE, apparently this is the guy who has the Improved Vintorez and YOU HAVE TO LET HIM DIE and take his gun. WHO FUCKING DESIGNED THIS QUEST!? The special weapons in every STALKER game have a little arrow in the corner to indicate that they are special so that the player doesn't chalk it off as another generic gun.
    The only word that comes to mind when thinking of this mod is (ironically) "Unfinished." Like yes I know these builds and diesign docs were "unfinished" aspects of this game, but god damn it really has a library's worth of bad design choices. Like 10 fucking BTRS in the last two locations!? This truly is a 6/10 mod.
    For all the shit people throw at lost alpha:
    1. The main story beats in Lost alpha and this are basically Identical.
    2. Lost alpha always gave me cohesive directions and quest descriptions.
    3. It looks AND runs better.
    In the end, I somewhat say lost alpha is an 8, and this is a solid 6 of an experience.

    People on 4chan used to hype this mod up and absolutely shit on Lost Alpha. From my perspective both had their ups and downs but LA was a vastly more approachable mod and is also one of the only big storyline mods in full-English (without needing a fan-translation). People really underrated LA on there when it came out, probably from their expectations not being fulfilled. It was, basically, "muh A-life or bust" so people saw that this mod has slightly more-free A-Life and hooked onto that feature without taking in the big picture. I didn't really know Vector of Alienation existed, but it seems like it fixes a lot of issues with OLR.

      @bazooka93 Před 2 lety +8

      OLR2.5 is what Lost Alpha was supposed to be. LA is just a cringy fanfic in comparison. LA suffered greatly from lack of direction. Whilst OLR focused on a particular design era, LA tried to include literally everything from 2002 till vanilla, and for many people including me, this just doesn't play right.

      @DonnyKirkMusic Před 2 lety +1

      @@bazooka93 true, I don't mean to brush past LA's storyline which was batshit crazy and only got reeled-in recently with the new patches. I actually saw more people focusing on how it had dead A-Life and broken quests moreso than the illuminati stuff though, which made me sad cuz you could tell that Dezowave had similar issues with getting the A-Life going as the actual devs for SoC did. I find that the core gameplay not being very good (until, again, recently) was the tragic thing about LA, rather than the story which I always partially ignored in these games anyway. I also have a soft spot for the map design, which you can tell they did a lot of concept work/planning prior to making the maps in order to really make the maps really atmospheric. The bad thing is that there's too many bushes and trees on the roads which fucks with the driving. But, you can tell they really cared about the maps being redesigned rather than just porting maps from the alpha (they even mention this in their blogs)
      Also, I find it hard to believe that certain quests in OLR were in the original SoC design document. A lot of it feels like typical Russian mod quests...not that LA is any better about that. I only mention it because people say that OLR is "so faithful to the alpha version, all of it is taken from early design docs".

      @@DonnyKirkMusic no mate I didn't even think much about storyline there, just gameplay choices. I'm not bashing on that but LA has duplicated locations, like old Bar/Wilderness and Dark Valley alongside build 1935-inspired versions of those. They were very well done and I cannot diss Dezowave on this, but it implies strongly they had no clear idea where the project is supposed to go. Let's not even mention CS cut content Pripyat underground was. Amazing location and some of the most memorable moments, but should belong to a separate mod. One of the very first features LA showed was Darkscape and it should've stuck to that era, 2004-2006, after the game was renamed to Shadow of Chernobyl.
      To address the overwhelming shrubbery in LA yes, I believe that is a total effect of Dezodor's bush fetish (no kinkshaming here). It impairs gameplay severely and is one of the biggest points why I prefer OLR2.5 over LA. It's just a detail but it makes a huge difference. Sorry, a decent gameplay in FPS requires the player to see what's in front of them. There is a good reason why Doom 3 was bashed in the reviews.
      Regarding storyline and quests, I've read documents from koan_podarok, but not all of them were in English and I have to admit, Russian is only my third language. There may have been points I either didn't pick up, or by now, just forgot. I'd have to go through them again now as my Russian got better, and I still assume there may be other docs published than koan_podarok. I'm also certain I've read about thing which, to may knowledge, are impossible to create in XRay engine unless some extremely creative portal play would be employed. I'm talking dynamic changes in level geometry in Yantar. But if multi-floor buildings were created in Doom or Build engine games I assume right things could be created with portals and effort which would make LA be released not in 2014 but in 2024. So, certainly, koan_podarok was not as closely followed; I'm not even too sure if that pack isn't from 2004+ era! Still, OLR was definitely closer to them, even if they were written up later.

      I'd say that you should try both out for a few hours and make up your mind. I have seen enough of a niche community around this mod in the west to see that some people really legit. like OLR more than LA. Vector of Alienation seems like it fixes most of the issues with vanilla OLR.
      There are just those types of players who'd rather play something a bit unfair and People's Soup-esque, with less of a story focus and more of a focus on player-freedom. LA can feel like it has too much story at times, especially frontloaded at the beginning which was a real pace-breaker that the original STALKER devs didn't really intend; they wanted the story to be mostly in the background akin to From Software's style of storytelling (hate to say it, but its so similar) where you read the PDA and descriptions to get info and piece things together, rather than it being told to you through cutscenes (mostly. Vanilla Shadow of Chernobyl does the bad thing of loading all the story dump at the very end of the game instead of making it more apparent what your character is doing/where he is going, but that is much better than not dumping any info or doing it all at the start).
      When the video creator said "be prepared to run through anomalies while being chased by mutants and being irradiated while an emission is approaching" and I was like "yup, sounds like a slavmod". Only time I had that experience on LA was when I played with that really buggy mod that allowed mutants to leave their set areas, causing boars to chase you through the entire map and to basically spawn like crazy.

    The 3.0 version of this mod just takes Shadow of Chernobyl and makes everything worse, the lighting is atrocious, the graphics in general are way uglier, the sounds are fucking trash, the "machine translation" is almost incomprehensible, the maps are big and empty and worst of all it's buggy as hell. Why would anyone waste their time playing an inferior version of the original game, just because it's different?
