Here is a riff that uses the double harmonic major scale. Here are the degrees: 1 b2 3 #4 5 b6 7.
It is called double harmonic because it has two augmented seconds and it is also called major because if you harmonize the scale, the I chord is Maj7.
I guess, by that logic you can come up with things like a double harmonic dominant scale or a double harmonic minor scale.

Let this be a lesson to all those bozos who say music theory takes away from their creativity
Yeah that s just bulls*it
Nah bro there is no painter more creative than the one who uses a single pallet of colour because he refuses to learn about any other one
i use this scale and i didnt learn about it or know its name lol, i just figured all lamb of god songs go well with it
I always hated when people say that theory or skill "rUiNs tHe fEeLiNg" of the music. Even though I'm not classically trained and the last time I did theory was when I was 17 - I always knew that theory always helps to unlock a new stage in creativity.
I like to think of it in the same way when you're speaking in any language. The more words you know, the more you're able to express yourself in ways that's creative, insightful and passionate without getting repetitive.
This sounds like a scale exercise to me. Idk if this was suppose to be an ironic comment or not. Normally I’m decent at detecting sarcasm but if you’re being sarcastic, your ability far supersedes mine
I love it when someone finally comes along and gives a name to something that I liked but couldn't define. Double Harmonic for days.
That is what music theory is. It's descriptive so we can talk about stuff we like without playing it.
@@tusharjamwal yes man. I'm complimenting his linguistics and thanking him for teaching me something with my own words.
@@cookingwithsilenceI was also very happy when I found out that the riffsalad song I wrote was in phrygian dominant. I like that sound.
Before that I used to say "this is a random scale I like, its a like a major scale with flat 2, flat 6 and flat 7"... smh
@@tusharjamwal that might be strange on the guitar because of the way that it is visually built. On the piano, it'd really be a small change from harmonic minor. Vocally it'd really mess with me though, because you would be having to reprogram some spacial habits that you develop from tons of repetitive motion. It's hard to visualize a change like that without just cramming it into your head scales.
This scale is really will known in arabic music Hicaz or مقام الحجاز
when you don't know music theory n try to sound "like a metal guitarist" i think double harmonic is where ears naturally go. or at least its where mine naturally goes. its such a distinct sound & is a scale that possibly even moreso than others (if that is even possible) emphasizes the overtone series making it perfect for holding notes since the resonances combine very nicely
It just depends on the person and their influences I think, before I learned theory my go to metal scale that I just natural figured out was the half/wholetone scale
@@Viper-dz2kw ahh no this is a good point. half/wholetone is big in 80s metal (outside of slayer) especially in solos, makes sense
The most popular instance of this scale is Misirlou, so that's probably where they got it
@@jdelacruz14791 you're onto something in the sense that even if you're wrong, Misirlou is written by a Lebanese man which is relevant bc the scale is traditional in Arab countries
my favourite scale to jam in is sort of a variation of this, it goes:
1 b2 b3 #4 5 b6 7
That's the 4th mode of the Persian Scale. It's also the todi thaat, one of the 10 basic thaats of Hindustani music
@@nirajmehta6424 ah I see, thanks for the information!
whats a #7
@@ananyaacharya6651 should have been ♮7
@@ananyaacharya6651 a sharp 7 lol. Probably an octave
The band Ankla uses this scale a lot. Their solos and riffs sound 👌🏼 with that scale. Thanks for reminding me that this scale existed!
Cheers for the tip!
I think that thrash band Artillery also incorporates double harmonic minor scales a lot.
Sounds like a proggier version of silvera - gojira! Like it!
A prog mix between gojira and lamb of god
Sounds like a tame Psycroptic riff to me
@@ryansager9224man really has been on the Psycroptic vibe recently.
@@ryansager9224 the first seconds I thought about them too, psycroptic are insane!!
the rhythm with those notes really reminds me of "The Philosopher" by Death
My favourite scale...
Its invented by ARABS
Music theory is the grammar to the language of music.
You can absolutely just learn the words of a language and string them together to maybe hopefully form a coherent sentence. But grammar is what enables you to really speak that language.
Same with music theory and music.
I have seen one thing that whenever there is a contrast of two things shown at the same time, it always sounds good.
Sounds like cold by psycroptic! I dig it
I love this scale!
People who enjoy this scale should check out the Diminished Scales, Harmonic Minor and specifically Phrygian Dominant!🤘
The byzantine scale is my favorite scale, thanks for doing a video on it!
Opeth proved this scale owns. They used it all over the Blackwater Park record.
damn, you’re good
Thanks!! amazing guitar :)

I'm dying to hear some thall riffs from that new guitar! Oh those bends 🤤
Nice stuff.
i looove this one
that's so dope
a level wich i will never reach
congrats bro!!! u r pro!
God that tone sounds like after the burial
Have you been listening to Psycroptic lately? This sounds exactly like Joe's riffing!
I was thinking the same and there is an other riff he posted a few days ago that is also really "Psycroptic-ish"
Yes!!
When you went up the scale in the beginning it reminded me of the dune soundtrack.
lamb of god goes djent
Lamb of god
0:17 this sounded so Psychroptic
i love that you shaved the centre of your beard
the sea beneath the seas of the sea
Thank you for reminding me of Lamb of God, been too long!
Try it’s modes out. You’ll enjoy ultra-Phrygian.
Damn Lamb of God song
Lamb of god type riff.
Could hear chris adler's signature drumming over this.
When Thornhill and Monuments have a kid
you should really try the Mcrocklin 'spider' exercise
First is worst!
Seriously though, you are a huge inspiration to me.
You make me wanna get a 7 string guitar I swear
His hands are teleporting
U need to do an armonic and skills with both hands course, will be great
He got a lamb of god riff
He
He-man!
I need you in my band dude, lol
❤
You math rock/ modern...headless players are always just next level.
I'm still just Tryna shred ,80's style !
Somewhat reminds me of In Due Time by Killswitch Engage although that song uses Phrygian Dominant instead
Sounds like a Psycroptic riff
This is like Lamb of God meets Gojira
💪😎🎸 KILLA 🎸👻
Rush cygnus x1 uses this a lot lol
Nasty
An absolutely in sync "headless player" ...!
☺️ 👉..I done did a Dad-joke !
Sounds like a upgraded version of Lamb Of God
im still not used to headless guitars they look so wacky, is it better than a traditional one or is it preference
gives off lamb of god vibes
Everybody is in the comments talking about music theory now I didn't need music theory to learn this but I also guarantee that if you learn music theory it's easier to visualize it
Kinda reminds me of death
definitely, Chuck uses the harmonic & double harmonic scales a ton. in his soloing he defaults to these two in every album he released (with exceptions ofc)
sounds like lamb of god
I knew that damn earthquake was just you again
instant psycroptic.
Phrygian Dominant
I wasn't expecting my stankface to be that hard
Laid to Rest vibes😂
Ah yes the Dune scale! (I know it’s used elsewhere that’s just the most prominent example I can think of in recent pop culture memory)
le summeriancore
hi can u share tips for right hand ?
IS THAT A 6-STRING IN THE BACKGROUND?!
What Tuning are you in?
Basicly it’s Caligula’s horse-marigold
is that 'the name of the wind' I see in your shelf behind you?
Yesss, i will read it when I finish stormlight archive!

Lol FM GUITARS out of nowhere
Why u no double neck tho?

Obscura riffs in a nutshell
Ahhhh, you mean the Lamb of God scale?
Do you play in a band?
Sounds like Dune
very psycropticy
Death riffs use it
Psycroptic + Gojira
Is this double harmonic major or double harmonic minor??????😢
Metal in 2023: Playing scales on CZcams...
Please tell me you’re in a band
may I sample a bit to try to scream over?
Psycroptic style
Opeth riff
Is this the one also known as “Egyptian scale”?
Nah thats Phrygian dominant
@@off6848 I’m thinking of something different. In D, starting on the A string (3 notes per string), the tabs would be 5-6-9, 5-7-8, 7-8-11. Is that Egyptian? Sure sounds like it lol
@@joshpetit44 That is the same one I was thinking of maybe its not phrygian dominant then I was always told that was it
@@off6848 I thought Phrygian dominant was harmonic minor, or a mode of it.
cool, but description says #4 and he is playing a perfect 4th
sounds like ihsahn

gojira lol
Dude, I've tried to learn music theory, and I just can't comprehend scales, modes, etc, and how to use that to make music 😥
Can you ask specific questions you habe? Maybe I can help
@skaaruu first off, sick pfp. Also, I just can't seem to remember the stuff I learned. I can't remember scales and modes and all their shapes. All the name/position changes. And to top it all off, i have a fuck of a time trying to use a metronome while I'm playing.
I want to get better but damn, idk where to start
@@uroboric and stuff like this --> 1 b2 b3 #4 5 b6 #7
I can't comprehend. I understand it's a scale of some sort. And there are some sharps and flats in there, but idk what notes to even play? It makes no sense to me
@@GnildnewOfficial The basis is the major scale, which is 1 2 3 4 5 6 7. To play this on the guitar I would recommend the 3 note per string pattern. Let's say you want to play the A major scale. You start on the root (A) which is for example on the 5th fret of the low E string. The pattern then goes:
E string: 5 7 9
A string: 5 7 9
D string: 6 (the 7th fret would be the root note A again, so the same note as on the 5th fret of the E string)
The numbers 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 just describe the note of the scale you just played. So 1 = 5th fret E string; 2 = 7th fret E string; 3 = 9th fret E string etc.
The sharps # tell you that the note is moved up one fret and the flats b tell you that the note is moved down one fret. The basis is still the pattern of major scale and you just move the notes according to the sharps and flats.
So if I wanted to play the scale 1 b2 b3 #4 5 b6 #7 in A the pattern would be:
E string: 5 6 8
A string: 6 7 8
D string: 6 (and the root again on the 7th fret)
A common way to build a riff out of a scale which is often done in death metal or metalcore is to play the scale starting on the 7th fret of the A string. This is the same note as your open E string. The pattern stays the same, it just moved down a string and starting on the 7th fret. Now you can downpick on the open E and play notes of the scale inbetween. That's also what he often does in the video.
@@uroboric Bruh, first time I’ve seen someone make it comprehensible - cheers
Double Harmonic Major IS Also AND Mostly A CHRISTIAN Scale
So G; A; A#/Bb; C; D; D#/Eb; F#/Gb; G; ?
Bro, that's just G harmonic minor.
Are you ever gonna work with anyone to release some real material or is the goal just to wrack up a few 100k subs on CZcams and call it quits. You got me guessing right now
1. they've released full songs already. 2. their focus is on improving as a musician, which is obviously how they got this far, not releasing a track that sounds identical to their last release every seven days. is that too complicated for you to wrap your head around?
He's working on an EP that's almost finished
Definitely not sped up
It's sped up. Play it for real.
Dont you get bored sitting alone in the room and playing that axe for months on end for online audience? Dont you have live band to go into?
Sounds pretty cliche
