    I can't express how grateful I am for this video! I've been hesitant to hand strip my own Irish because I was afraid I would hurt him by doing it wrong. This gave me the confidence to finally give it a go and my pup looks great now!!!

    Hi! Thank you for this, it is very informative. We are in love with the Irish Terrier having lost our 9.5 year old girl a year ago to cancer. We now have a 4 month old IT pup and I want to hand strip her myself. Can you recommend any products to start? Of course you needn't mention brands, but do I start with coarse, medium or fine stripping knives? I am about to order online. It is very hard to find a groomer who hand strips where we live (Canberra Australia).

    • @hackneybarkers
      @hackneybarkers  Před rokem +2

      Hello! Thank you for this lovely comment. So sorry to hear about the loss of your love. We have a video on our TikTok where it shows what tools we use and what to buy. You would need all three types of stripping knives, as each one is used for a different area. For example: the fine tooth is for details around the face, where as coarse would be used more on the jacket (if required). Hope that helps 🐾

    Would you strip an irish wolfhound in the same manner? My puppy is about 8.5mo and I've been noticing that I can pull out little tufts of her hair. And when do you know when to stop? Just when the hair doesn't come out? I'm slightly concerned that my knife is cutting her coat.

    • @hackneybarkers
      @hackneybarkers  Před 11 měsíci +2

      That’s correct, our lovely Irish Wolfhound are suitable hand stripping! The technique is the same, of course, the style and the lines are different for every breed.
      It is hard to explain when to stop, you want to leave enough coat to be between 1 and 3 inches long. You want to avoid balding them or seeing skin. Their coat should look very natural.
      Breaking the coat is a possibility when the technique is not correct. Make sure to pull in a straight line avoiding wrist movements.
      I hope this has helped! Good luck ❤️

    I am long time IT owner....two previous (not at same time) that had a long life and now have a 3 1/2 year old girl that is the best of them all. Extremely affectionate yet protective of the family.....she doesn't like it if my wife or I scold one of our own kids for something ;-) I have always hand stripped myself or had a groomer do it. Extremely hard to find a groomer that knows or is willing to hand strip and clippers will ruin the coat. What is thre best way to know when the coat is at the optimum point for stripping? I usually go by when it is coarest but not sure if that is correct.

    • @hackneybarkers
      @hackneybarkers  Před 11 měsíci +1

      They are amazing companions!
      The hair cycle varies from dog to dog, based on their environment and hormonal levels.
      When ready the coat is harsh, wiry, and it is very easy to pull out.

  • @Kageoni187
    @Kageoni187 Před 4 měsíci

    Wow the difference between this and people who shave (I heard about this technique watching a video about an Airedale terrier who was shaved once too often) and they talked about this and how the coat looks amazing if it is kept up this way.

    Do you ever hand strip Golden Retrievers? Can one strip undercoat while leaving guard hairs intact? My service dog loves to be groomed and I inadvertently balded him once with a Furminator. He enjoyed the attention so much I lost track. Looking for a gentler way to de-shed so he doesn't give off floofs while he works.

      @@hackneybarkers It's a wonderful bonding experience - you're right. I had a bit of time outdoors today waiting for someone. I took off his vest and hand stripped his coat (with just my fingers). It was great. I didn't have to worry about stopping while he still had hair.
      His coat _literally_ sparkles now. (Really - his top coat has glittery strands.

    Can you tell how far to go on Irish Wolfhound’s beard? What is their “tell “?

    • @hackneybarkers
      @hackneybarkers  Před 10 měsíci +1

      With Irish Wolfhounds the goal is to maintain a natural look and therefore there are not these types of signs indicating a specific area to be taken tight.
      Ideally, you want to have a rugged look and pluck unruly hairs that are distracting from the outline of the dog 🐾

      Stripping can be done without any tools.
      However, using chalk powder and stripping knives eases the process.
      Chalk powder helps grip the dog's coat better, while stripping knives provide an effective way to remove dead hair, reducing the time and effort required while ensuring a polished and professional finish.
