- A successful artist looks back with loving memories on the summer of his defining year, 1974. A talented but troubled 18-year-old aspiring artist befriends a brilliant elderly alcoholic painter who has turned his back on not only art but life. The two form what appears to be at first a tenuous relationship. The kid wants to learn all the secrets the master has locked away inside his head and heart. Time has not been kind to the old master. His life appears pointless to him until the kid rekindles his interest in his work and ultimately gives him the will to live. Together, they give one another a priceless gift. The kid learns to see the world through the master's eyes. And the master learns to see life through the eyes of innocence again. This story is based on a real life experience.
❤ This Script had me from the first word to the very last. I'm 72, and I wrote the first dictionary of Emotions in 1980, remodeled E. John Robinson's studio and house, did some work for William Radley in Le Virage, and took my son to see the da Vinci Expo at the San Jose Tech Museum in 2007. This movie was a really good Gallo production. The Gallo here in Sonoma county was growing olive trees. I'm very proud of my journey through this life. 🎉
What a phenomenal movie. I loved every minute of it. Just jump in and watch it if you've stumbled across this movie.
Andrew Wyeth was my first fav artist. I loved his subjects and his media. Christinas World was my first fav work of his. Its an optical illusion and much more. The girl was disabled..Anna Christina Olson...but not in his world up in Maine. That got me interested in painting myself. I was horrible. I had no perception. I passed my supplies on to my 80 yo Mom. She took lessons and created wonderful works. Shes gone now but lives around me in all her works hanging in my abode. RIP BLGM! ❤ Everyone needs art in their lives. ❤
Movies based on real lives are often the best. The reality is far more interesting than most films this days.I find this movie to be a hidden gem. The narrative so real and yet veiled in hope and goodness. I miss the times back then before the world became increasingly darker. To make our world better is the art of life. Norway

As an artist, I find this film insightful, hopeful and standing firm in the exploration of the beauty that is discovered in our daily moments. The quote I am holding to my heart: " A good idea is never lost." I am applying that concept to my own work as the standard of quality. As I look over the years of work, the ' good ideas' stand out, shining as a beacon where the lesser ideas will simply fade away. One does not search for the ' good idea' , one merely is open to the exploration of the ideas. Some are good, some are not so good, but I give attention to all the channels of discovery as I mine for the gems, ' the good ideas.'

Yep. Ray was great even in questionable- bad films. Haven’t watched this yet. See The Phoenix - I think of that one as the quintessential Ray Liotta film for some reason. If you like him, you’re gonna like The Phoenix.👍🏻✌🏻

Any movie with Ray Liotta is worth a watch - never have I been disappointed
Being a second generation Polish and Ukrainian; I totally get Nicolai.... his rejection of this life,, and irreverence,,, yet he believes in God. And tried to capture God on the canvas... and as a senior now,,, yes,,, I sometimes think of the younger in my life,,, how stupid they are,,,, and hope they will get what I taught them as they go along in life. One wants to hope that they made a difference. That a part of us is still here after we die/leave here. Just as the young muse learned later- Nicolai lived in him.

Artists contribute to us as Nikolai felt,, everything is insane... without attempting to go deeper...

How true! And I find myself alone , a year after losing my younger best friend, 36 years old, when he suddenly died from COVID!!! I still find it odd that that is what took him. He wasn't vaccinated and he was living with a girl and her 2 daughters and they had all had it but we're over it at the time he died. December 20th, 2021. I'm 65 and we met when he was only 19, and I was 47. I was looking for a helper for my work and I took him on and we became good friends from it. I MISS that young man SOOOOOOO MUCH!!! I STILL CAN'T BELIEVE HE'S GONE!!! MY GOD!...

How Nicoli went on after his loved ones were murdered is beyond me..the sadness would have brought me to my knees never wanting to rise again..I would of painted only tears😢

This was the most beautiful, thought-provoking film I've seen in a good long while. I laughed so much and even shed some tears.
I'll add my word of appreciation and preference for films based on real life figures or accounts. Positive (non-cheesy) films are just as easy to make as violent hateful ones. We are in an era when more positive and encouraging material is a needed blessing.
All of us have hidden talents in life , One man charged my life forever! His name was Robert K Mcferrin ! He trained me how to sing! His training me enhanced my wringing skills to earn a good living in life! I can still hear his golden voice even today!

I loved this film , thank you for uploading ...the cast were so well chosen every one of them ,I felt they were close to me while watching the director did a great job the main characters were great but as a collective family in the making of this ..well it created such an authentic journey ..love the boy artist as his sensitivity seeped through the screen and the cynical older artist well it just goes to show a kindred soul family heart brings out what is not totally lost ...my love goes out to all struggling Artist all creatives and all those that are determined to stay on their path .
Love Ray Liotta guys got range, tragedy when we lost him and young by today's standards 67 isn't classed as being old and easily could have had 10 to 20 years being an active member of the acting community, he was taken unexpectedly and I don't know if that's worse or when you know its round the corner. RIP Ray 🙏 we love ❤ n miss you and thanks for all the great roles you played. You are one of Hollywood's true greats.

I saw at the end of the movie "cocaine bear " was dedicated, in loving memory of Ray Liotta, he was a brilliant actor and I was absolutely gutted when he passed on to the next place, I've spent more time watching movies with some of my favourite actors it's crazy as they're in my home more than anyone and when they go it's almost like losing family.

Tinny error 'cos this movie dated in 2006. Ray Liotta (1954-2022)? An other powerful and eloquent actor. I knew this actor in the film Unforgettable (1996). This film, for me, is a marker in my memory. Liotta holds the main role and dominates the film by his character. Thx a lot.

A bit slushy and sentimental, but somehow good for unwinding on a Friday night. A nice exploration of the mentor relationship which is so important for young men transitioning into manhood.

Absolutely awesome true story great writing super cast .very inspiring and also funny. Esp the trick he played on his friend with childs paintings.theres a lot happening from the first word until the last. Everything has significance ,even the painting at opening credits.
