I work in a male dominated environment and to me this movie hits " right at the core" of my existence. Who has the right to decide on my life/career, choices/paths. It has been a long hard struggle but by the grace of God "I'm still standing". I have been placed on suspensions, didn't receive a salary for sometime, but by His grace I survived. Remembering that this wont/ was not to be my first disciplinary action, I taught I would die. Not realising it would not be the end of that. I would have to suffer a number of "disciplinary actions against me, by the institute I work for bcos I refuse to conform to the "norm". God has blessed me with wisdom/discernment, and the understanding that I am here to do HIS works and to change/challenge the "status quo" it has not been a easy walk but I have done so by His Grace. So to everybody that has been told "its not done this way, its a mans world, don't rock the apple cart........... I say NO..... If God felt I was not "suppose to", I believe my heavenly Father would not have seen me tru all those tribulations. So do not let ANYBODY tell you NO, because if God be4 you, who can be against you " the world perhaps" but my Father in heaven has the final say....... TO GOD BE THE GLORY

I came here because of Aaron Tveit (I’m a musical theater nerd) and Lou Diamond Phillips but the breakout star is the woman playing Alejandra. She is wonderful! I cared for her character deeply and appreciated how she was both powerful and feminine.
The movie doesn’t make this issue easy and there is no clear villain (other than some random unstable guy). Both the church and Alejandra have a point to be made and that deserve to be heard.

I never leave comments, but after seeing this film, which if I am correct, is fictional, I would have MANY things to say. Jesus said, "Be one as my Father and I are one." The film portrays what will obligatorily happen in the Catholic Church eventually. Seminaries are literally empty because young men are not joining. Why? Each one answer herself/himself. Jesus DID NOT establish A church while He was here on Earth. Denominations DO NOT SAVE. We are saved by the grace of God. As for the film, I think it was very necessary to do something like this. Let's all read up on our history and when reading the Book of books, ask the Holy Spirit for discernment and understanding so as to not have our own interpretation of the Holy Scriptures. I enjoyed the film very much. God bless!

Jesus DID establish Church. Read Gospels! Seminaries are empty only as much as the Church dropped ball on discipline and relaxed formation and liturgy. Traditional priestly societies are full of young men. I think USA in particular is on trend where so called Traditional Latin Mass parishes are going to outgrown regular parishes. The only issues is that pope and cardinals/bishops in power don't want to recognize post second Vatican approach as failure. Faithful priests get treated harshly, because they don't use pretentious clerical buzzwords and platitudes instead of traditional practices and discipline.

And whatsoever thou shalt bind upon earth, it shall be bound also in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth, it shall be loosed also in heaven." Matthew 16:18-19
"And the eleven disciples went into Galilee, unto the mountain where Jesus had appointed them. And seeing him they adored: but some doubted. And Jesus coming, spoke to them, saying: All power is given to me in heaven and in earth. Going therefore, teach ye all nations: baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you. And behold I am with you all days, even to the consummation of the world."
      Matthew 28:16-20
Nowhere is Jesus Christ recorded as saying, "...upon this Bible...", or "...give the Bible to all nations..." He said TEACH. He gave men the keys of the kingdom of Heaven. He gave authority to teach nations, to men of His CHURCH. Denominations? No. Jesus Christ did not authorise a multiplicity of differing churches. He built one only. Separation of Church and State. The woman who wanted to become a priest, official Church teaching from very early on in the early Church stated women couldn’t become priests. This is the same in the Eastern Orthodox Church.
Once the Church proclaims a doctrine ex cathedra eg...the Trinity, 2 natures of Christ etc then it is infallible and the teaching can never change.
As with Martin Luther the reformer, the Church has already declared infallible dogma, they couldn’t change dogma. So the church had no choice but to declare him a heretic and excommunicate him.
The state has zero authority over Church dogma and teaching. You can’t sue the Church to change its dogma.
The State has no authority in ecclesiastical law.

I am a Sister, and I always understood this desire, but I also understand my vocation to make God's merciful love visible as a woman of God. This teaching is infallible and not dictated by secular law. The separation of Church and State has its virtues; we see this in education being able to refrain from dangerous teachings that are prevalent in our day. Pope John Paul II even researched the question if women could be priests. There is nothing in Scripture to support that feminist desire except that the apostles were all males, but the Blessed Mother is not a priestess but a Mother of her people. Jesus says from the cross to John "Behold your mother, woman behold your son." I believe that the vocation of the woman is to be a mother in how this possible. We cannot fantasize about our vocation. You can either accept that vocation that is God-given or reject it. This will always be the question, and I do not know what the answer will be in the future, but as for the present moment, every Religious woman has a vocation to be a mother in whatever way it is given to her. Caring for people is a privilege and a burden. There is enough loving work to do in God's vineyard without squabbling about supposed rights. No woman (Religious) has the right to demand to be a priest, but she can be a woman following Christ in his vineyard.

The 2017 film “Created Equal” provides a platform to articulate several main arguments for changes in Catholic doctrine, discipline, and canon law. The movie tells the story of Sister Alejandra Bautista who is dismissed from her teaching position at an elementary school for allegedly encouraging students to advocate for admission of women to the clerical state. When confronted by the pastor of the parish school, Sister Alejandra professes that it is her desire to become ordained a Catholic Priest. The film juxtapositions canon law and civil discrimination law as a means to articulate many of the arguments and popular thoughts about this contentious topic. I appreciated the empathy portrayed for the protagonist Sister Alejandra and the position of the defense attorney Monsignor Enrico who represented Church teaching in the civil court proceedings.
I think that many people in the world, both members of the Church and non-Catholic, would agree with Sister Alejandra and judge the matter by the principle that all people must be equally protected by the law. In the western world, equality before the law is one of the principles of classical liberalism that has given shape to our contemporary culture and civic legal system. Equality before the law is included in the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights and is enshrined in European and American thought. Equality, fairness, and justice are noble principles that are venerated both in the Church and State. The film brings the case of women’s ordination on the grounds of civil discrimination case for the sake of facilitating a change in Church teaching. This is the milieu of equality before the law legislation. From a canon law perspective, we can examine the rights and duties of the Christian Faithful compared to the civil judgments that seek to uphold the principle of equality under the law.
The canon that is most referenced in the film is Can 1024, which states that a baptized male alone receives sacred ordination validly. The film never addresses the Catholic teaching of sacramental validity. During the court proceedings the petition to admit Sister Alejandra to the clerical state is an appeal to the argument of gender discrimination on behalf of the church. The film never touches on the sacramental aspects of matter and form which are detailed in Catholic theology and canon law. The film conflates Can. 1024 with Can. 1037 in regards to the discipline of clerical celibacy. Although the film does this in a subtle manner, the topics of sacramental validity and the discipline of clerical celibacy are entirely different matters. Each entail a specific origin, history, and development in the life of the Church and canon law.
Church Canon Law 208 emphasizes a genuine equality of dignity and action among all Christ faithful. This principle is emphatically emphasized in the Vatican II documents of Lumen Gentium (32) and Gaudium et Spes (49, 61). Canon law commentators have reiterated that this principle of equality among the faithful should be viewed according to his or her own condition and office within the constitutional principles of the Church. (Fornes, p. 41, Exegetical Commentary on the Code of Canon Law Volume II/1 by Ernest Caparros) The radical equality under the law that the film advocates for does not congeal with the principle of personal freedom rooted in the sacrament of baptism. Every member of the Christian faithful, including Sister Alejandra, exists in different subjective juridical conditions that emanate from the single and unique constitutional condition of the faithful. (Fornes, p. 43, Ibid.) The filmmakers do not understand the constitutive structure of the Church and how equality is operative in the Church structure and guided by the font of divine revelation. The arguments against the Church’s understanding of divine revelation are simple and open the door to subjective interpretation of the entire deposit of Christian faith.
The film gave a good overview of the program of priestly formation during the conversation between the pastor and Alejandra’s lawyer. In the courtroom testimony of the female psychiatrist, the process of reviewing candidates for seminary entrance also reveals the process of investigation of candidates for ordination covered in cann. 1050 - 1052. One area the film did not explore was the duties and obligations for Sister Alejandra in her state in life. Was she a professed member of a society of apostolic life or had she professed vows or the evangelical counsels? She dressed in a religious habit in the beginning of the film. I wonder if she was a professed sister and subject to religious rule of life? Where was she in religious formation and who was her competent authority? What recourse did she have to her religious superior? If she was a religious sister, her actions should be guided by cann. 573 - 606 according to her state in life. The film also fails to articulate the freedom Alejandra has to seek a theological formation and education. I have personally received instruction from women theological faculty members who hold doctorates and pontifical accreditation from all over the Catholic world. There is nothing that would hinder Sister Alejandra from embarking on theological formation. This is something the film does not get correct.
What I like most about the film is how it portrays the ignorance of Catholic doctrine by those who wish to deconstruct and change it. I think that the film was empathetic to Sister Alejandra’s arguments, but it does not properly portray the reality of Church teaching. The film was written from a polemic approach and featured language that characterized entire populations of the Christian faithful in an uncharitable manner. Members of the lay faithful, religious sisters, catholic civic leaders, and clergy are portrayed with little empathy or mutual respect in the film. The film incorporated a few lines that are frequently used by protagonist of women’s ordination. Namely that there is a “stained-glass ceiling” in the Church, the only thing preventing ordination is “biological gender”, and that members of the church who have a dissenting opinion are “defrocked”. The term “defrocked” is not a legal canonical term and is not used to describe the loss of the clerical state in the Catholic Church. I do know and have encountered many people who hold positions like Sister Alejandra in the film. I think this film helps us recognize the ways we can improve the misunderstanding of Catholic teaching and offer more opportunity to share the doctrine of the faith for all. It is important for us to dialogue with and encounter others about these important matters.

I think this movie shows the confict that exists among men, all around the world, around the issue of power. / If there is something that an honest woman among men can feel, it´s confusion. The things of the heart are subtle, as pride or selfishness. I believe she (it´s a movie) should have set herself free from her ideal image of the church and done the good she longed to do in any place that may have granted her this possiblity and/or help. / To have someone, who says to belong to a church, to bring that church to court to change their beliefs, is a contradiction. Either you stay to respect their beliefs, or you leave, as did Martin Luther, for both actions show your love for your convictions. Blessings.

The Catholic Church has been using that excuse that Jesus Apostles were all men for years, what they fail to mention however is God made one woman , a judge and leader over Israel (Deborah), he caused another to save the lives of the Jewish people (Esther), he caused another to prevent David from shedding innocent blood (Abigail). He came to a woman first after his ressurection (Mary Magdalene). He also rewarded three women whose courageous actions unknowingly to them placed them into the bloodline of the Messiah, (Rahab, Tamar, Ruth). The Lord puts women in prominent places all the time, the Catholic Church however has always been far to blind to see that. Also they have always did things they benefit them above everything else. The fact that we can read a bible in our own languages today was built on many lives lost and blood shed by the Catholic Church. Men like William Tyndale and John Huss. They murdered Joan of Arc and then reversed their decision and made her a saint when it suited their narative. They made a murderer, Sir Thomas More, a man who killed several reformers, who slandered and completely ruined the reputation of a good man who died when More himself was only 7 years of age a saint all because Henry VIII of England had broken off England from their grip and decided to think for himself. Think about it people.

Billijo Maynard please do more and better research, the Catholic Church honors and respect the women in the church. Just think....The Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus she is number ONE woman in our beautiful church. The women play a very important role in the church. This movies always portray The Catholic Church as the bad institution. I can name only a few very important women in the life of Jesus Christ, Mary Magdalena, the Samaritan women at the wheel, the women cured from an hemorrhage, Mary and Marta. All this superficial movies just talk about modernist, progressive gender equality, etc, etc.
The laws of the world are way different of the laws of God.

      @@rudikaryadi5896 Here's your citations:
      God using women:
      Luke 2:36 - Prophetess Anna
      Romans 16:1-2 - Sister Phoebe
      Jeremiah 9:17-20 - Mourning & Cunning WOMEN
      9 Prophetesses:
      Miriam... Exodus 15:20; Micah 6:4
      Deborah... Judges 4:4
      Huldah... 2 Kings 22:14; 2 Chron. 34:22
      Isaiah's wife... Isaiah 8:3
      Anna... Luke 2:36
The Four Daughters of Phillip... Acts 21:8-9
Other women also prophesied, but weren't described as prophetess:
      Rachel... Genesis 30:24
      Hannah... 1 Samuel 2:1-10
      Abigail... 1 Samuel 25:3-42
      Queen Esther... Esther 7:1-6
      Elisabeth... Luke 1:41-45
Mary, the mother of Jesus... Luke 1:46-55
Two of these women above spoke up to save their lives & their families. IF they would have kept silent, they would have died with their families. Their names were: Abigail & Queen Esther. The example of Abigail was when she *went against her own husband* because he was evil. If she had not spoken with King David, she would have died along with her husband for the evil he had done. The LORD took revenge & smote Nabal her husband: 1 Samuel 25:38. And King David married his wife after the Lord God killed him vs.39-42.
Of the nine female prophets mentioned in scripture:
      - One was a widow (Anna)
      - Four were virgins at the time (Philip's daughters)
      - Three were married (Deborah, Huldah, and Isaiah's wife)
      - One do not have their marital status mentioned (Miriam)
      - The Jewish Talmud also adds Sarah & Esther to the list of prophetesses
Joel 2:28-29 tells us that in the end time there will be an increase in both men and *WOMEN* prophets.
Acts 2:17 And it will come to pass in the Last Days, said God, I will pour out of my Spirit on ALL flesh: and your sons & your *DAUGHTERS* will prophesy, and your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams
Acts 2:18 And on my servants & on my *HANDMAIDENS* I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they will prophesy.

To be a priest is never be a "right" of anyone. Even one is a male, baptized and confirmed in the Catholic Church, one cannot claim the right to be ordained as a priest. The priesthood is not like a qualification; if you pass all examinations to be a doctor, you can become a doctor. Furthermore, anyone can say that he or she feels the calling to be a priest or a nun or a lawyer, etc..but how to verify the call, which is the discernment.

Just a pity that she also didn't realise that one doesn't have to be a priest exclusively to serve God, and advance His Kingdom. Her character quite irritated me - as I reflected on so many truly great women in the Church who have often bravely and faithfully, served God. Look at the work of Saint Mother Teresa, would anyone say what she did was inferior? (this tiny nun in physical stature, who one day left the safe confines of her earlier religious teaching order, to go out into the slums of India, with nothing but a big loving heart, and a desire to serve God, through helping society's least and most vulnerable, especially those that lay dying alone in the street; what a mission, that then was not being taken up by more people at that time. There have been so many wonderful women like this, including Saint Elizabeth Seton (see link) czcams.com/video/bPfelwZgGE8/video.html Boundaries exist realistically everywhere in life, and are most of the time they are there to ensure a sense of order. As a modest example, think of an Army etc - where not everyone will be able to join it (having to pass fitness and other tests); then some will serve in the lower ranks, others will lead - yet the whole army relies on everyone doing their job well. Similarly, not everyone can be a mother, a very noble role; or even a religious sister. For me, one of the tragedies of the religious nun at the heart of this story, was her failure to see the tremendous vocation she had as a teaching nun, able to help her charges truly realise their potential ( suffice she only sees fulfillment in a woman becoming a priest only. which is sad). It reminds me of the story of Adam and Eve, when told that there was one tree in the garden that they could not eat from, they did; yet they had so many other alternatives, but they wanted what they were not supposed to have! What I am really saying is life is often for most, full of various prohibitions, and some for good basis.

I was captivated by the arguments why women can not be a priest. It was not precisely written in the bible but you have to consider that a priest (a male) is the head of the local church, while a family as a domestic church, wherein the father (a male) is appointed to be the head of the family, not the mother. Both have different important roles in the domestic church. In the same way in a the bigger community, the church.

      @servantgeorge1700 Před 4 lety

True. The Bible speaks of the nations being ruled by women and children, it even says that the men are as women. This is coming true and is the reason that we are falling apart as a nation: too many women ruling and really young boys are acting just like them. Women rule as they see fit, women just think different, and for that reason they need men, and for so many reasons. I often wonder about female pastors: if they're running the show, where are all the men. Though I also understand, and remember when most men were real men, even in the household, now it's mostly just 'yes dear' and just to keep the peace men let the women be the head of households. Men are now becoming less then what GOD created and what He required of a man: could it be that feminist and the women in general are doing a very good job at removing masculinity from men (because they want it). Masculinity is the main ingredient that makes a man.
