  • I learnt this tune, written by Frédéric Paris, from playing in sessions. (I think. I can't remember learning it, so that must be how it got into my head.) In the original key it fits fine on the viola in first position, so no transposition required!
It's also a lovely example of an A part and a B part which are exactly the same except for the first note, and the way that the change of this one note then changes how all the notes that follow it will be received.

My thoughts on hearing this one: perfect for a summer day; balm for troubled times, or a boost for positive times; grateful to see and hear you playing it!

I just found your channel and I think you are very talented! I have played viola since I was about 10 years old, and lately haven’t really picked it up much and played it. I mean I’ll play it every now and again and I haven’t forgotten much at all, but I definitely am out of practice. I used to play in the city orchestra and I want to get back into playing the viola because my wife just started learning the violin. I want to play the viola like you play! Do you have any recommendations on how to start learning to play like this?

Hi, thanks ever so much! The way I started to play viola this way involved studying what folk fiddle players do, and then applying this to the viola as best I could. I did it by watching and listening to other players, a few fiddle workshops/lessons, talking to other players, and a lot of trying things out and practice! Some of this did involve using a violin sometimes, so I could participate in workshops with a group of violin players, but then I took what I'd learnt and tried it on the viola later on.
