- I walk through Boston's Downtown during the Holiday Season. I start at the Boston Common, the oldest public park in the United States, where there is a skating rink and a Christmas tree donated by Nova Scotia. I then head over to Winter Street and pass by some carolers at the Macy's store before making my way over to Quincy Market.

Every year, Nova Scotia sends the City of Boston a Christmas tree to thank them for the help they provided after the Halifax Explosion. Nova Scotia’s Tree for Boston on display on the Boston Common. On 6 December 1917, 2 ships collided in Halifax Harbour, causing a devastating explosion. It killed nearly 2,000 people and left hundreds severely injured and homeless.
Boston sent immediate medical aid and relief supplies to Nova Scotians. We will never forget this support and kindness from the people of Boston. To say thank you, the province gives Boston the gift of a beautiful Christmas tree every year.

In 1973 myself and a lady friend were walking through Boston Commons Park with another couple around 12 a.m. We noticed a man in a wheelchair on the shore of the pond and a person sneaking up on him from behind the trees. My friend and I stayed, talking loudly to prevent the mugging, while the other couple went to fetch police. A few minutes later they came back, frantically waving at us to leave. Long story short, the guy in the wheelchair was a drug dealer and the seedy guy behind the trees was an undercover cop. We were interrupting a sting operation.

The Swan boats and pond are in the Public Gardens just south of the Commons. They are two separate parks, divided by Charles St.
