If TV like this still existed i would have no problem paying for cable
Me either
RustbeltRob classic ~ And back then you didn't even have to!
Shur nuff Restbelt Rob!
If TV like this still existed, you wouldn't need to pay for cable.
This is my first viewing of Make the Connection. Love it!
At first I thought remembering $19 owed seemed a little bit petty, but then I looked it up and $19 in 1950 is $204 today! Makes a bit more sense (cents wink wink).
I'm a big fan of What's my Line, but never saw this show before. It must have been on when I was already asleep at night back when I was a kid. Lovely to see Gene and Betty and even Fred Allen and Gloria Dehaven. Strange that Fred said he needed to live 10 more years. He died well before that time.
It was seen during the summer of 1955 on Thursdays at 8:30pm(et).
Same with me. Also, my birthday is September 2, 1955, and the one shown here was aired on the previous day.
Sadly, it was only the next year Fred passed. 😪
I love it…Fred comes out with,
“I’ve got nothing prepared.”
He then proceeds to present a composition or rather an ode to the city dweller , arranged for choir, piano, guitar and soloist, that is, himself!😂
Fred Allen said (in the early days of television, yet) that "Imitation is the sincerest form of television." Prescient.
I expect it worked for radio and likely publications, too. Still does, I figure.
For those of you who don't know who Meredyth Wilson was, he wrote the iconic musical The Music Man -- both the music and book/lyrics!
The correct spelling is MEREDITH WILLSON
@@4seeableTV Yes, sir.

Sad and ironic that Fred Allen mentions needing another 10 years to finish his book since he died just 6 months after this broadcast (assuming the Sept 1955 date is correct).
Thanks for great information and facts it makes watching soo much more interesting when u know back stories etc.
Fred Allen was a one of a kind guy... 😊😅 he always made me laugh
I wish Fred Allen lived as long as Betty White
Betty has looked the same.
She looked 55 when she was 30.
I think it's the hair
This is absolutely fascinating. My great-grandparents were 31.When this showed aired and they're still with me.I'm happy to say. They were in World War two and my grandparents were only six at the timeand they were in Vietnam, My dad was in Desert Storm, and I was in Afghanistan, Army Captain. This is fascinating, though. Going back all this time. Where is this film hidden? It's 70 years ago.
That song lol. 😂😂🤣🤣😆😆😄😄
The correct air date (per newspaper database) is September 22, 1955.
Those kids gave their addresses. Wow!
Cute little ditty. Gene didn't need the guitar.
liberty Ann kinda scary
Yep, but only scary nowadays, and if it were filmed today, they no doubt would have edited it out. Back then it clearly wasn't much of a concern.
A few years ago, I watched an old back and white game show that had Audrey Meadows (Alice Kramden from The Honeymooners) as a guest. And she gave out her social security number.
As a child of the 90’s I was taught to know my home address in case of emergency. It’s better she knows the home address than not and it was much harder to get around back then. Less chance of someone entertaining the idea of coming over so to speak. Just a different time for sure.
Things were SOOooo different. Remember the first time some psychotic put something in Halloween apples? Shocking!
Anymore please of these shows
Thanks for sharing, this was fun. One of the more interesting game shows I’ve seen.
Fred only lived one year after saying at 14:22 "I'll have to live ten more years".
Actually he lived just over 6 months after this appearance. :(
Gosh Look At Betty White. So beautiful.
How beautiful this old good TV show was. Sorry if I beat someone feelings, but that looks to me that the real America... ❤️❤️❤️
This was fun.
I have never seen this before! I love it! Lol
$150 was a lot of money back then, but damn I would still take the $150 that is more then a days pay for me
Gene Rayburn played the guitar!
I LOVE this USA!
Gene Rayburn was teamed up with Dee Finch at the time hosting WNEW AM radio's morning drive time program. He left the show in 1952 and was replaced by one of the program's panelists, Gene Klavan.
Betty looks so young here.
That’s because she literally IS significantly younger.
Betty White was born on January 17, 1922, so she was 33 here.
Betty Whites still going strong long after those others have been long gone....shes been in alot of shows thru the years
RIP Betty White
Betty is stunning....
OMG! That song is hysterical, lol.
Fred Allen only had less than six months to live.
I thought Eddie Bracken looked familiar. Just realized it's Mr. Duncan.
This aired a week before my brother was born and he's 63! A month before James Dean died
Happy 64? 😎
was your dad part of Miss Evans class?
Fred is such a queen.
I’m not sure I would say a queen. Perhaps a showboat. He certainly was extroverted to say the least. I thought he did fit in well on “What’s My Line,” where he served for some time before his death. He was funny for sure.
Nice show!!
Gloria Dehaven was gorgeous.
She was Peter Marshalls (Hollywood Squares) sister!
@@ninnerj6400 No, she wasn't Peter Marshall's sister. Joanne Dru was his sister.
The Gloria panelist is quite good.
love it
If the person running this is still active, this aired September 22, 1955...
I think the clues Gene gives before the game are a bit too generous.
I must say I agree. I expect they were provided by the writers or producer.
The format of Make the Connection is very similar to I've Got a Secret. Maybe that's why it didn't catch on.
Woah! almost 63 years ago.
Despite the differences, and advancements, it’s amazing video was available at that time haha.
Never heard of this show.
What's My Line 2.0. Pretty cool.
It was a much more innocent time.
Professionally threw the phone book lol
Hello Lucy, How are you doing?
Gene Rayborn? Don't remember him looking so young!
Nancy Christiansen watch old match game episodes from the 60’s.😄
Dylan P
I'm a major "What's My Line " fan, but not so much the Match Game.
John Charles Daley set a high bar. I don't remember this show at all, but this is similar.
Check out "The Name's the Same" with Gene and Meredith is most episodes; even younger.
Betty White? WOW!
I wonder whether or not Fred Allen knew that there was already an urban folksong, "The Man Who Never Returned," written in 1949. It probably wasn't popularized until The Kingston Trio recorded it in 1959, but according to Wikipedia, it was originally adapted from an older folksong about a ship, as a mayoral campaign song for Boston candidate Walter A. O'Brien. [en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M.T.A._(song) ]As a native Bostonian, Fred might have heard the original. Anyway, here's a link to the Kingston Trio version, recorded about 4 years after this "Make The Connection" episode. :) czcams.com/video/Dh994JcEfkI/video.html
Gene was goodlooking💜
💜💜💜❤️❤️❤️
HELP I'm looking for a particular episode, not based on the Special Feature or Star...it was a challenger lady who designs bridges for a mid=Eastern state..? Missouri, or Kentucky? the state doesn't matter, but the panel doesn't get the line....it's the episode trying to fine HELP
I wonder if Fred Allen completed his book since ha passed away 6 months after this episode aired
When "Much Ado About Me" was published after his death in 1956, it was about 95% completed.
will we look back to today with the same strangeness we see this?
3:10 - "I'm getting TIRED of this game - would you be interested in some Post Office???
Was Ms Evans on What's My Line
Who cut his hair? I like Gene Rayburn, but he looks really...don’t know...but Betty White is always a joy...
Karen Dinsfriend for 80 years 😂 yep
His suit is all over the place. Does not fit the sleeves are puffy the front opens up too wide. It needed burning. His shirt is too tight at the neck and you can see the necktie outline. I really like him but he looks awful here. Like a football player in a cheap suit.
Gene Rayburn sporting the Nathan Christmas haircut.
Gene Rayburn from Match Game!
This show is similar to "I've got a secret"
The female John Travolta LoL
😉
Familiar tune.. Old Joe Clark.
Is that Durwood Kirby announcing
Just wondering, do you have the episode of What's My Line where Clint Eastwood attended?
I could not find Clint Eastwood mentioned as appearing as a mystery guest at www.kinescopes.com/WML_cbs.html. Did he appear as a panelist?
Im an Eastwood expert and never heard of him appearing on a game show.
It seems as though, these days, the more flash and technology, the dumber the show. This show, from an era that now seems like a million years ago, obviously borrows from What's My Line, which was then,as Jeopardy is now, the most intelligent and entertaining game show on the tube.
Wow, it's Betty white. She's young! And not saying crude things
mmm...as usual, the first 2 I've seen, the woman tees it up and the dude gets the answer
I'm not a big Fred Allen fan but I've always liked Gene Rayburn.
THE NEXT COMMENT IS NOT RELEVANT TO THIS SHOW BUT WHATS' MY LINE
Is this What's my line? Doesn't look like it... Why did this show up as listed as What's my line? Anyone know?
Its called Make the Connection. It probably came up because of Fred Allen's connection to WML. Just my thought. I've found all sorts of programs going on from WML.
That is America at its peak. Only downhill from that.
Sad to say, but if a TV host today asked a little girl for a kiss on the cheek, he'd get into real trouble.
The show is a blatant ripoff of (and not nearly as good as) I've Got a Secret.
As Allan Sherman, creator of "I've Got a Secret", once said: "If you don't steal from yourself, others will!"
I actually enjoyed this. The producers of I've Got a Secret created Make the Connection so I guess they did kind of ripoff their own show. I would've watched both shows, but it was 1964 before we got our first TV.
