mother goose brought 8 goslings into my backyard one day.. several hours later she left with six of them. We raised the other two until they flew off in the fall. Friendliest birds we've ever had. We hope to see them return this spring.

Yes . Geese mate for life and if they find a suitable nesting spot they will return to it every year. I know this because I stewarded a pair that I came to love. Every year when they returned from their migration north as soon as they saw me they would either fly or swim directly over to me. They knew me by site and I would protect them from intrusive neighborhood kids and other nuisances.

I’ve avoided getting involved with Canada Geese until this year but three of them came to join my group of Swans and I’ve seen them in a new light. Then the pair brought their 5 goslings in to see me and have done every day. They are brilliant parents, much better than Mallard Ducks…who leave it all to the Mother. Formidable in attack I am privileged they trust me 100%. Watching the young ones grow will be fascinating.

Well, swans are beautiful too. Ducks I would say are 'cute' rather than beautiful. For chickens, despite their usefulness (i.e. poultry and eggs), they're not among the most beautiful of the birds. The chicks are cute, but not as cute as ducklings or goslings or cygnets (baby swans). But all birds have their own charm, in my opinion.

If the gander needs help, she'll pitch in, but she'll normally stay with the goslings because a different threat might pop up to threaten her young,

They do communicate well between species! After challenging the swan, the goose went back to the goslings, to show the swan WHY. You can herd geese by hissing at them - they hiss at each other, so they understand it when YOU hiss at them.

If this had have run long enough, you would have seen a role change take place. Canada geese share duties including incubating the eggs. Once they are hatched and the goslings are able to move around easily, the parents will show them what signals and sounds mean "I'm leader now." These are the first lessons in learning the signals that they must know and use in a migrating flock. Until the goslings have grown their primary and secondary flight feathers in, they will stay glued to which ever parent last gave the "I'm the leader now" signal.

Not a good idea for humans to feed them. Bread, crackers, popcorn, and other high-carbohydrate foods are like junk food to birds. They provide very little nutritional content, and birds that fill up on them will not seek out other, nutritious food.
