It's overlooked now, but Johnny Carson actually did a great deal for the preservation of endangered species, with the appearances of celebrity animal experts such as Marlin Perkins, Jim Fowler, and Joan Embrey. For viewers who didn't have access to zoos which housed and bred these animals, appearances like this might be their first exposure to seeing a baby gorilla like this.

"The Late Night Show" with "Johnny Carson" aired at 11:00 pm, So the first time I got to watch it, was while I was staying with my father at his Hotel. He cooked us some buttered popcorn and then turned on the TV to the sound of Ed McMahon's booming, Heeeerr's Johnny, while Doc Severensen's Orchestra played the introduction.
At the age of 14, I was hooked, I became a fan. I tried everything I could think of so I watch him when I got back home. I would wait till mom went to bed [her door opened into the front room], sneak out with a blanket, cover myself and the TV, turn it on, keeping the volume down, and pray I didn't get caught [I did twice]. When I got older I got to make my own rules, so I allowed myself to watch him every night he came on. Right up until his very last show.
NBC & Jack Parr's choice in picking Carson to replace him was brilliant.
And while others have [since] followed, Leno, and Letterman being among them. None could ever, or will ever start him.
    He is The G.O.A.T!

I think I would have liked watching Johnny Carson. He's so good with the animals like Conan.

We had so many wildlife shows in the 60s/70s. Too bad they didn't spend far more time talking about the dangers of losing species and their habitats & how to protect them. For example, why is this little one without his mom? Johnny was always such a good sport & naturally compassionate.
