  • Penhouse: The Thalaiva Rises!
My first tryst with the Chennai based Penhouse was about a decade back, when I had ordered my first fountain pens from them. It was, in all honesty an exploratory offer - the pens that I had ordered were an assortment of locally made, cheap, plastic ones - as I had wanted to test their shipping and services before going in for the more prized treasures that they had on the store. Point is, that first dealing with them was a satisfactory one, and over the last many years, I have had numerous occasions to deal with them, and am yet to be irked.
Those initial dealings turned into a friendship as I stood witness to this gentleman from the engineering background slowly, but steadily, forging his way into the world of fountain pens, inks, and accessories. Why? I guess I was among the first customers to have bought their entire range of inks when they launched it. The same was true for their leather pen cases. I am also grateful to them for some nice vintage pieces that I was able to acquire from them. What has always fascinated me about C P Chandru, the spirit behind Penhouse, is his entrepreneurial zeal - his love for mechanics, sans machinations! But I had never met the man himself.
It was therefore a pleasant surprise to meet him at the Chennai Pen Show, where he had spread out a good part of his range. The fact that the table space that he had taken up was large enough to compete with the big and mighty of the trade and that his counter was always crowded with busy buyers were indeed heartening views for me. What was even more heartening was the fact that the people behind his counter always had welcome smiles on their faces, eager to assist anyone with a query. Needless to say, it is easy to spot a winner when one sees one.
Then on their invitation, I visited their exclusive store in the city - swank, with enough pen and ink power to blow everything to smithereens. We talked and talked - about the industry, the prospect of an impending pen and ink revival, the interest of youngsters, the ways of enticing our young to write, his plans for the future - and then, talked some more. It was late in the night when I went back to the hotel, tired as hell, but content that there still were like-minded individuals to take the fight to the enemy camp.
Thalaiva, Thalaivaa, Thalaivar. In whichever way you spell it, it means the same: Boss. In Chennai, a new leader is awakening. Watch this space, we are certain to hear more from him!

I frequently buy from them mostly pen spares like converters and nibs.
They have some great collection of both modern and vintage pens and other stationary & non stationary items.... One thing I must say their service is excellent.

@@hemkeshyeole4630 I used all my fountain pen in ebonite feed, they are extremely good, although what I felt it's not the feed but the nib size which flow the ink, use fine or extra fine nib, as my son also using ebonite feed, eyedropper ebonite pen in school, He is using it nicely no problem as on date.

@@hemkeshyeole4630Feathering majorly depends on 3 things:
      1. The quality of the ink
      2. The quality of the paper
      3. Size of the nib
Buying a cheap economical inks not only feathers, the harsh chemicals affects the pen slowly.
Noodler's (US) company makes excellent pen friendly inks and they have couple of versions like 'X-Feather', 'Bullet Proof' like so all are waterproof inks. The price will be on higher end like ₹2000 onwards but they are one of THE BEST
      Other factors of Feathering are,
      - Nib size and the speed of writing
More broader the nib size delivers more ink and more slow we write starts the paper to bleed. Fine & Extra-Fine nibs majority won't bleed on most of the papers due to the very minimum quantity of the ink delivered on paper through the nib. Trick is, as far as don't pause the nib on the paper for long time at same place regardless of quality of paper or ink..

wetness depends to a greater extent on the nib size.

penhouse is excellent store to buy fountain pens in India.
But I would caution people about their homemade ink.
I bought pink coloured ink, which spilled and left unremovable stain on my fountain's body.
Some folks might enjoy such stains as part of fountain pen experience, while other may not. I belong on both ends :)
