God that hit me right in the feels. This is essentially what made the dance so devastating. House against house. Brother against brother
It hit all of us bro. Even half of qualities all other people had of them may be dance of dragon can be avoided.
I love how realistic this plays out, Arryk is genuinely trying his hardest to focus on the fight while also trying to get in striking range of Rhaenyra
At that point he knows he's a dead man so at least he would get the job done after making it all the way there.
I love the choice of not putting any music while they were dueling. The clattering of swords was just intense.
Sometimes you don't need music to showcase emotions and intensity.

I'm glad the Queen at least know that Erryk was loyal till his end. Also this puts another HUGE dent on Mushroom account on what happened. Erryk would had probably not killed himself if Sir Laurent killed his brother instead since he wouldn't need to feel the guilt of killing his own brother. Can't really blame Laurent for not knowing which one is who since even the Queen couldn't tell.

This doesn’t do anything to Mushroom’s account, the shows are set in one universe and the books are set in a different universes. GRRM said that years ago, before HotD even started.
The knee wound is present in both twins, right as Ser Florent appears Arryk gets cut in the leg too, both are injured which is why when Ser Florent asks “Which one is Erryk?” Rhaenyra has no answer because the one distinction between the two was now gone.

@@darraghkelly1744 Oh she's gonna have much worse to deal with.
She's more complex in the books. The show have clearly made her the protagonist and removed many of her flaws. There's clear villains in the books and whilst she isn't one, Rhaenyra isn't a hero. I hope they delve more into her paranoia and how it affects her down the line.
@@nocturnalcove9736 I think we will get her paranoia but it will be build up slowly through seasons. I would like it to be build like Walter White. If you know what I mean, until the audience gradually can't longer defend her actions.

Right? The Clegans hated each other so we all just kind of expected it. This was way more emotional, twin brothers fighting to the death because of a stupid, senseless Targaryen war. And the surviving twin committing suicide because he killed his other half 😢
After checking several sources - it seems that Erryk won the fight.
Except that contradicts the scene itself. EDIT : to clear the visible confusion, i'm not saying Arryk won, i'm saying there is a continuity error in the scene that explains why so many think Arryk won. @@Eniril1 Bro, can you go outside and touch grass? The actor confirmed it was Erryk who falls on his sword. And if you read the books *which you clearly don't* 🤡 Erryk also won in the books. I don't know if you've been living under a rock but this show follows everything happening in the books but they have said they are making slight changes but regardless Erryk was the one who falls on his sword. But it's okay! This is your world. You can think Arryk won when he really did not. 🤓
Compared to the book version, the scene looks dumb.
"The singers tell us that Ser Erryk said, “I love you, brother,” as he unsheathed his blade,... and that Ser Arryk replied, “And I you, brother,” as he drew his own.... The twins battled for the best part of an hour, Grand Maester Munkun says; the clash of steel on steel woke half of the queen’s court, but the onlookers could only stand by helplessly and watch, for no man there could tell which brother was which. In the end, Ser Arryk and Ser Erryk dealt each other mortal wounds, and died in one another’s arms with tears upon their cheeks."
Yeah, but sword fights don't last an hour. Even if both had been fully armored. The book is written from a maesters' (read nerds') perspective, that has never swung a sword himself. Things being exaggerated or distorted in the retelling is definitely a theme of the book.
@@davidgretzschelcommunicati1630 he probably also thinks that the stillborns described in the books truly did have those monstrous appearances. born with tiny wings and claws of a dragon etc. Do not believe everything Westeros historians describe in their books, they weren't even there lol.
is an exaggerated reinterpretation of what happened. This scene is more realistic and less corny.
Duty over family.
The Tully's of Riverrun doesn't like that
The twins fighting to the death was perfect because it reflects the depth, the dance had. Pitting brothers and sisters against each other, it's so tragic.
Sometimes, duty is the death of love.
Sometimes love is the death of duty
This one took me by suprise. Jeez, didn't expect him to kill himself.
He couldn't live after killed his brother
Especially it was a draw in the books they fatally killed each other
The leg wound continuity problems aside, i feel that Erryk won the fight because a. Arryk already knew it was a suicide mission, so it doesn't make much sense to fall on his sword and not try his damndest to have a go at an armorless Ser Lorent and the queen. b. On the other hand, Erryk made a final gesture of loyalty by killing himself because there would always be a doubt of him being Arryk undercover. c. If Erryk won the fight, then it would be Arryk who says 'You parted us' which makes sense as Erryk was the one who left the Kingsguard and his brother to join the Blacks.
Can it really be put aside ? Because the one with the leg wound dies and that's erryk
It's already written that erryk wins. But There was definetly a continuity misconduct
For such a show to make such a mistake. I might call that some harsh words
They both suffered leg wounds. Watch in slowmo
He can always surrender and ask them to interrogate him to check if he is the real Erryk later. For example, just ask him some questions that only the real Erryk would know, like who he trained or talked to yesterday at Dragonstone and what they talked about. Or they can ask Erryk to show them the way to his own bedroom in Dragonstone. Arryk just arrived today and would not know the answers for these kinds of questions.
@@Nmerejilla Yes. Erryk (team black) got right leg cut. Arryk (team green) got the left leg cut. And the brother with the right leg cut lost the fight.
@@wandersonfrancisco8494THIS
Showrunner Ryan Condal said it was Erryk who won the fight, but the screenplay says otherwise.
While Arryk got a cut on his left leg at 2:02.
The one who got killed had a cut on the right leg, which Erryk received at 1:38.
The one who’s right leg was cut is Erryk, the one who’s left leg was cut is Arryk. In the end Arryk killed Erryk and in his guilt and shame killed himself afterwards.
I think the green twin was the one who survived the duel, only to fall upon his own sword. I know it’s never specified, show or books. But if you follow the duel, the black gets cut in the right leg, the green gets one on the left. When the one is strangling the other you see the one being strangled (the same one that kept taking swipes at Raenyra) kills the twin with the cut on the right leg, we see him grab the right leg wound for reprieve and then kills him before the black twin can recover….makes the scene sooo much more impactful when the Green twin turns to her and says…”You’re grace…Forgive me” not only just impactful but would also make sense, though yes you could also take the route the book was implying “nobody knew which one survived, so they’d have been killed as a precaution anyways”. I like my interpretation better, because it shows in full view the horrors of wars and the affects of brother vs brother more specifically
Different strokes for different blokes.
I just dont see why he would refer to rhaenyra as your grace if she is considered illegitimate by the king he serves.

@@user-lg6xo6tn3l Maybe killing his own brother made him have an emotional reaction that triggered him to reconsider his choices up to that point?
@HippopotamusPencil the showrunner already confirmed Erryk(black) won the duel
I don’t know how anyone could consider this Clegane Bowl 2.0, these two were the exact opposite of the Clegane brothers, Erryk and Arryk loved each other.
if Erryk won then he felt he had fulfilled his oath but could not have lived with the pain of killing his brother
if Arryk won, he felt that the mission had gone completely wrong and had to kill his own brother because of it. Arryk wouldn't have been able to get past the guards and ser Lorent in that condition either. Better to keep some honor and go down next to the brother
1:42 - Edna Mode: "No capes!"
I know Erryk wanted to kill himself but if he had wanted to live in this situation, it is extremely easy for them to verify if he was the real Erryk or not.
Even saying that, nothing says he needs to guard the queen.
If he can't kill her, I find it unlikely he'd have stayed to sabotage them so knowing his original goal was unachievable he'd have went back to Cole.
They should call this twin for a twin
I like how grieved the queen was over the death. Shows she has some compassion.
Idk I think Arryk won and killed himeslf out of guilt cuz Erryk is the one with the gash on the right leg so he’s the one that died
RIGHT???? I THOUGHT THE SAME THING. like bro just murdered his womb mate…like that was just plain sad
I definitely think Arryk won the fight
Can't be, he apologize and called the Queen, "Your Grace".
@@RicePho yea after murdering his brother in a plot he already felt was dishonorable he chose to die making everyone believe his brother died accomplishing his duty
Just look at the knee of the brother who kills himself, you will see the wound on his knee, so it's erryk
although the two are kingsguards and are considered one of the best fighters in the realm, their fight is a bit sloppy, with a lot of grappling. Which in my opinion makes it all the more organic. U gotta remember that while yes both are seasoned and good fighter, they are also brothers, twins no less. So i think while they were fighting each other, they wer also fighting themself, fighting their inner conflict, and emotions, struggling to chose between love and duty to their lieges. For love is the death of duty.
What a scene, nothing flashy the intensity can be felt through the screen.
Erryk won the fight. He shouldn't have killed himself but did it out of guilt for killing his twin & knowing they would always suspect him of being Arryk.
I cant be the only one who sees Arryk winning then the show just says "Erryk won"
Still did justice to how it happened in the books though
It’s so weird how Erryk got slashed in his RIGHT leg and Arryk got slashed in his LEFT leg. But then near the end of the battle, Erryk (who was being choked) gouged the leg wound thats now on the RIGHT. It was confusing.
Because it was Arryk being choked, Arryk who slew Erryk and fell on his own sword for repentance.
This duel is rather emblematic of the entire Dance, two brothers, so similar any differences are inconsequential, brutally fight to the death. One wins, but he's so broken over his victory he destroys himself. Are we talking about the twins or the Blacks and the Greens?
Someone needs to make an edit where each twin has a green or black shield above them so we can follow the fight better, it keeps cutting away and it makes it harder to follow
"what did we talk about 3 days ago" is how you solve this
This kind scene is what make this show totally superior to The Acolyte. I know it's hard and a bit unfair to compare both but still. Here the actors are giving their 120%. They seem genuinely invested. Rhaenyra actress is even some kind of they them irl and it doesn't even show here because their goal is to make a great show, not just to spread the ''MESSAGE''. House of dragon is epic. Female character are interesting and not just ''look how much of a woman i am''. Male character aren't all incompetent.
I eagle eyed this fight 5 times, i can definitely say Arryk won the duel. Erryk had that wound on his leg and at the right of his forehead.
These comments are wild and void of common sense.
Erryk won the fight and killed himself out of guilt. Arryk did not otherwise, he would have 1) Still tried to kill Rhaenyra and 2) Would not have called her "Your Grace"
Is it me or is the continuity of this scene broken. It’s clear that ser erryk wins in the end but if you follow the scene closely it’s clearly erryk that gets stabbed right?
I know this is like a recount of history in this world but damn I wanted to see more of em
Erryk….god man…I’m so sorry brother
Anyone else here for the McPoyle esque “Brother!” Scream?
Blows my mind that Luke Tittensor was in Emmerdale and both of them were in Shameless and Brookside. Brits will know!
Imagine if Arryk was the one to win this duel and then went pretending to be his brother, waiting for the next chance to strike down a now better guarded Rhaenyra.
Perhaps laying low, working as a spy and or somehow being won over by rhaenyra over time. The continuing to pose as Erryk on the side his brother picked, to honor him and his oath, or out of guilt.
This way all these two characters amounted to was the old "who's who?" trope, which wouldn't even have worked this well if either of them had cut their beard or if the one serving Rhaenyra changed to a new Queens Guard armor.
Everyone has to watch alt shift X's newest video, particularly the parts dissecting erryk and arryk's roles. They're both genuinely good guys being used in different ways
so anyone eles smacking their head at the stupidity of allowing someone whos identical twin brother is on the other side have such easy access to the queen without even taking the procasion of a pass word or code fraze
To be fair it was a pretty insane idea from the get go. Otto's reaction to the idea said as much, it likely nearly worked because no one would've thought it would be attempted.
@@GreaterGrievobeast55 and yet they just killed her son accident or no her husband is a realist who basically just left to set up the assassination of her brothers son and no one thought you know what might be a good idea to make sure if they get the same idea it’s atleast a little harder
It was Erryk who killed Arryk. Watch inside the episode, it is confirmed by the writers and they said that both of them had the same leg cut so ser Lorent and Rhae couldn’t tell them apart. But Ryan confirmed it was ser Erryk (team black) who killed ser Arryk
If the writers intend to make Erryk win the fight, they made an editing mistake in this scene, because Erryk had the right leg cut and Arryk the left leg. So the scene shows us Erryk losing the fight.

I think it doesn’t matter who “won” this fight, because the point is clear: no one wins in war between blood and in this Dance.
It’s hits harder when u have brother

3:07 Yeah, right buddy. That's not a sword you're pulling out. That's a light saber, you just turned off.
Maybe it was Arryk who won but since his brother is dead by his own hands, he just abandons his mission and apologize for trying to kill her and just ended himself.
Would be funny if the brother at dragon stone just randomly decided to shave his head a few days prior 😂
This us why we have a tradition of wounding the face of a twin.
Much of this could’ve been avoided if Daemon had been there. Arryk would be dead, likely very very dead, but Erryk wouldn’t have had to endure the trauma of killing him. At worst he’d have had to endure a few of Daemons cutting quips.
This happened to my buddy Erryk
Erryk gets killed if you re watch closely he gets cut in the right knee which his brother gets cut in the left knee close up panel shows Arryk grabbing his brothers wound which is on the right knee he kills himself because he couldn’t live with the fact he killed his brother why he at the end says your grace forgive me for trying to kill her giving her respect in the end and then falling on the sword
*BROTHER!*
The use of “Your grace, forgive me” is very perfect for leading into the open ended, making audiences think into separate ways after one of them killing himself. If Erryk survive, the major guilt for him is cannot protect his queen from any assasination, maybe he will even be questioned about the loyalty for the queen by the council, if it is Arryk, it’s much worse, he comes here alone without any reinforcement, he’s already dead when his brother found him, and both of them come to the realization that if there’s no political bullshit, they would be still together. Like normal brothers would.
Arryk would never call her "your grace" if he is sworn to Aegon II and views Rhaenyra as illegitimate.

Ignoring what the showrunner said and answering your question: The queen had a protector in front of her, and the rest of her queensguard behind Arryk, who was also very wounded. I believe he felt his mission was not honorable and a failure.
This fight was TRAGIC!!!!
I also feel like the winner would still be executed for the safety of Team Black.
Or they could ask him questions and the previous day. What was his guard duty yesterday? Where is your bedroom?
Maybe he apologized for trying to kill her, after having to kill Rhaeneras kingsguard twin just having a regret (idk which is which by names)
I love how people in the comments are still arguing which is which.
Ser Erryk Von Liechtenstein will be remembered indeed. 🙌
It was Arryk, at the end...
This is pretty on the nose about the dance of dragons as a whole.
I say the greens twin wins then falls on his sword. The your grace line are regrets for picking the wrong side. They sent him on a death march and he had to kill his brother. Also think of the line Erryk give to deamon about joining at 8& 10 and what do they do when the family fights among themselves.
I know the show runners said otherwise. But I still like to think that it was the infiltrator that survived. It has more emotional weight for me personally. I know it’s not the case, but I prefer it.
Ir was confusing but im starting to think that only Arryk got the leg wounds (left and right)
Sorry, my dumbass just can't figure it out. Did the brother who was defending her win the fight & kill himself, or did he die during the fight?
Wait, Erryk was the one with the leg wound since the other was trying to kill Rhaenyra but then the one with the leg wound is the one that says "you parted us" and ends up killed while the other asks Rhaenyra for forgiveness?? Is this some terrible mistake?
