- A lullaby to the goddess Mariamman - some verses from the Mariamman Thalatu.
This deity is considered a great healer in Tamil and south indian traditions. A strong force, decked with nature. Her body is said to be the earth and she takes unto herself plagues and epidemics ridding humans of ills. She is denoted sometimes as being ferocious, aptly, a ferocious and strong willed mind is important to heal oneself, both physically and psychologically. Needless to say, rituals surrounding her worship always include natural elements and all of them with medicinal and antiseptic properties - neem/ veppillai and turmeric to name a few.
There is an annual ritual done in the homes of most tamil families, called the Canjee. It is the offering of a simple glutinous rice porridge to the goddess to seek her protection against diseases. Preparation for the ritual involves having a vegetarian diet for a number of days, cleaning the house thoroughly, burning incense with heavy smoke all around, bathing with turmeric water and tying neem leaves in front of doors and windows.
It is maybe time to revive the ways of the ancie nts. There is so much wisdom and hygienic practices embedded in traditional lifestyle that we have too often disregarded, because we could not comprehend.

Beautiful Voice. Although I don't YET am able to speak Tamil, I think its. beautiful language and so many beautiful renditions to the Divine in this language make it all the more beautiful as is this prayer to Devi Maa. Such healing practices along with such beautiful songs need to be taught and brought into practice once again more and more so that we can connect with the Divine/Nature more deeply.
