- Hello everyone and welcome back to the channel and a long overdue update about my Black Powder Epic AWC project. I first made a video about this early last year and hoped to have it finished by June to start throwing dice and playing some introduction games of Black Powder.
Unfortunately due to real life circumstances, I had to spend 2-3 months away from the hobby and when I came to start the Epic ACW again, my inspiration had waned somewhat.
But recently, I have picked the project again and wanted to show you exactly where the project currently is, what I've added and my plans moving forward. You can find the link to the first video below:

May your dice roll well and happy gaming!
You're ACW look really good you got a great paint job on well done👍👍👍🤠🤠
Thank you! I always enjoy painting these miniatures, full of character and just enjoyable to work on 😃👍
Those look great, Ste 👍. 3 stands for a ‘standard’ size regiment is definitely the best approach for BP. In that way you can have 4 for a ‘large’ and 2 for a ‘small’ regiment and the relative frontage proportions work nicely.
Cheers Andy, much appreciated! I think it may have been Leon that I first saw using three bases as the frontage using four bases was of that at 28mm. Plus psychologically three bases is probably my limit 😃
Love watching your vids, just picked up a Bolt Action starter set and can’t believe all the other models and time periods available, definitely looking at ACW and ECW as they are also two time periods I’m interested in. Just coming over from GW and Warhammer and AOS for quite a few years so your vids are perfect, thank you. Keep up the excellent work, puts a smile on my face looking at what can be achieved, although seeing some of your Bolt Action DAK models and the weathering I’m no where near your level Sir.
That's awesome, thanks David, glad you enjoy the videos! Welcome to the world of historical gaming and you are absolutely right about the sheer amount of rules, periods and miniatures that are available for historicals. There is always something to keep it interesting. That's very kind of you cheers, I really enjoyed working on my DAK and need to add more to it this year. I've always said, if you're putting paint on miniatures, you're already one step ahead of many people in the hobby. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment, much appreciated 😃👍
Easy and safe conversion for the artillery is to cut off the exterior wheel 'hub' as flush to the wheel as possible. This exposes the hollow centre for the axle and you can pop it onto the other side of the artillery piece, and then glue the 'hub' (or a blog of greenstuff) onto the new exterior (formerly inner). Breaks up a 3 gun battery a bit and if you have any dismounted cavalry officers or generals, stick one of those on an artillery base for a further mix.
That sounds like a really good idea, thank you! If I add any more artillery bases to the project I'll certainly be giving this a go 😃👍
Good choice to start with 20th Maine. Their commanding officer was Joshua Chamberlain who in my opinion epitomises the definition of a true hero. If you have not seen the film Gettysburg I would strongly urge you to do so. It will certainly not fail to inspire you to finish the project.
Jeff Daniels plays Chamberlain in the film and does a superb job. What’s more the actions of the 20th Maine shown in the film are, I believe, historically accurately portrayed. Chamberlain’s biography is a fantastic read of itself. I rate him on a par with Dick Winters of Band of Brothers fame.
If you have already watched the film then you’ll know what I mean and so would urge you to watch it again.
I think you have done first class job with your collection so far. Maybe you could do a few bases at a time and then divert into something else for a change. I’m having to do that after burning myself out on my epic ECW project.
Perhaps you could try a modest game with what you have done so far and see if it provides your motivation to do more.
Look forward to seeing them in their first battlefield appearance.
Cheers
Keith
Thanks Keith. I first heard about Chamberlain in Ken Burns' Civil War series and he certainly stood out as an exceptional leader. I've never got round to watching Gettysburg but it's on the list.
I think painting at this scale definitely has its limits and a break is needed at some point. If I had to paint these for a sustained amount of time without a change, I think I'd go a bit funny!
I'm hoping with a few more regiments, a modest game will be on the agenda 😃
Will be great to see these in action 👍
Cheers Rich, I'm really looking forward to learning to play Black Powder. I've always wanted to game ACW and this seems the perfect scale 😃👍
They look wonderful Ste. I do like the smaller scales for mass battles
That's awesome, thank you! I think the Epic Battles range really does a great job at representing mass battles. Really looking forward to getting started 😃👍
They look superb mate,I'm still to start my epic ecw Scots,I may get a box of epic ace, keep up the great work
Cheers Justin! I've had a go at painting all of the Epic range but the ACW range have been my favourite so far 😃👍
They look great ste do not worry about time between updates your quite quick really I am still waiting for part two of Ken's 3d printing tutorial good job I have not bought the printer yet.
Cheers dude! I'm hoping the next update on this project will be a lot sooner than next year. Unfortunately I don't have any inside information on the next printer video 😅
Great stuff Ste, I am doing the 'Guts and Glory' set, although not as good as yours. Enjoying them though.
Thanks Pat, that's the box I'm currently working my way through. I think everyone has their own technique for painting at this scale, I just wish mine was faster 😃👍
I was about to suggest that you follow the 'paint the unit, not the mini' mantra that keeps me as a gamer in 6mm ACW, sane. But I had second thoughts....you will end up with a brigade strength force on each side, but I am used to 15+ brigades each as a small force of 6mm soldiers...so I think you can afford to lavish more time on the individual figures. Epic scale is very much a mid range scale, still veering towards skirmish level encounters, rather than full scale battle in the ACW. So I think your approach is right for the scale. Your figs look good and crisply painted and I look forward to seeing you deploy them in an action.
Fantastic work, Ste. Your look just as good from one foot away as they do from three feet away, something I have never been able to accomplish. Looking forward to seeing this project go forward.
Thanks Dave, I don't really have any plans to build this any bigger than a couple of brigades per side so I'm always looking at keeping the quality of the paints with a technique that allows for quantity. Looking forward to painting enough to get on the tabletop 😃👍
Cheers Don, much appreciated. The one last step that I complete before basing is one last round of painting, tidying up, correcting errors, adding highlights to the parts of the base that can actually be seen. I think this helps a lot in the overall finished unit 😃👍
Awesome little update Ste! Great to see you persist with the project and continue to return to it. The results are fantastic and im sure once you get a game in with them they will be very rewarding too!
Thanks James! It was a bit of a challenge getting back into painting these after such a prolonged break but after the first base it definitely got easier. Looking forward to finally seeing these on the tabletop 😃👍
Very nicely done figures. Thank you for the vid.
Hey Shaun, thank you, really glad you liked the video 😃👍
Good stuff- particularly like the scruffier look of the Confederates
Cheers Martin. It takes a little bit longer to paint but it definitely sets them apart. With the strips being very similar, steps like this go a long way to making them look different 😃👍
Really nice work, ste. I must get back to my epic acw some point lol
Cheers buddy, I think sometimes with the Epic scale it is taking that first step and then I seem to get on a roll painting them 😃👍
Looking great!
That's awesome, thanks David! These are always really enjoyable to paint and the look of a completed regiment makes it all worth while 😃👍
I've just picked up the Guts & Glory box. Though lately I've been reading different reviews on magnifying head bands for my blind eyes, lol.
That's the box I picked up as well. Yes, I can certainly understand that! After a few hours of painting these my eyes definitely begin to suffer 😅👍
Looking good, very close to your goal for their first game
Thank you! I'm hoping to make another start on these soon and get a couple of games of Black Powder played 😃👍
Nice one, Ste these look excellent. Contrary to popular belief you don't need loads of units to play Black Powder. Keep it going.
Thanks Paul! I think I may have been influenced by seeing massive games of Black Powder but you're definitely correct, I'm pretty sure I only need to add a few more bits and pieces to start playing 😃👍
They look great mate
Cheers mate, much appreciated! Very much a slow burner of a project but always enjoy working on these 😃👍
@@OnPointHQ if i live to be 100 i doubt ill paint all my epic stuff haha
How did you do the basing? Looks like a botto laye of something with tufts from which range? Thanks :)
Hey Andrew, itss actually quite simple! First I use Vallejo Thick Mud and apply this to the whole base. I actually glue the first strip on before adding the mud as this means I can get it between both strips. Next I use PVA glue to add static grass to different bits of the base. The last stage is to use Woodland Scenics clump foliage. I use superglue gel to apply this. Hope that helps 😃👍
They look awesome :). I am working through my ACW ready for CrackCon :)
Thanks Aled, much appreciated! Looking forward to seeing your ACW game at Crack Con 😃👍
