He didn’t know what he looked like because he’s never seen a mirror. He just assumed he was a fruity guy. In the advert that’s their first holiday (he works from home so rarely goes out). When he saw the reflection of himself from the pool, that’s when he realised he was not as fruity as his kids and it’s only then he made the deduction.
