    I’m not African-American so I don’t have the kind of name, but i am African more specifically Nigerian and growing up in London, I remember asking my mum why she named me what she named me. My name is Anjolaoluwa, I remember people struggling to pronounce it and making fun of me, so I shortened it to Anjola, and then people started saying it’s like Angola, the african country you can never win with these people. They can learn to pronounce arnold schwarzenegger but not my name. But then i learned to love my name, it means ‘we are enjoying the wealth of God’ and I’m proud of it 🤣😊

    She's right. My mom is always telling me that people with "ghetto" names SHOULD shorten their names because it doesn't look good on an application. Its shameful!! I'm black and have grown up in a black community so those names don't really stand out too much to me personally but I just wanna say, its the work ethic that matters!! :O

    • @thandekapercival5636
      @thandekapercival5636 Před 7 lety +47

      "Work ethic" should not require you to erase your history or culture, that's white supremacy. Don't allow anyone to re-brand what you should value as "ghetto".

    My name is La 'ShelleMoneé. I don't know how to look at it but I've always been in love with it. People are typically Suprised when they look at it on a paper and then see a black woman... Its crazy. Society is crazy. I always get a "ghetto" nickname forced on me. I don't think there is such thing as a ghetto name but whypipo seem to think it's imperative that we all must have those names

    • @KishorTwist
      @KishorTwist Před 6 lety +1

      Being a black person, especially in the USA, is already hard as fudge. Why do so many black parents put such a giant hurdle right at birth to their children with those ridiculous names?

    • @TinyyTinkerbell
      @TinyyTinkerbell Před 3 lety +4

      @@KishorTwist ....there's other ethic groups with far longer names than what black women get...

    This made me so proud of my name I actually frequently shorten my name from Latisha to "Tish" just so people will stop mispronouncing my name but I now realize that my mother named me probably and I walk with my head held high have no reason to be ashamed

    I still remember my kindergarten teacher looking at my name on paper then looking down to my 5 year old face and saying "do they call you anything else, honey?" My name is Chiqeatria.

  • @zi2651
    @zi2651 Před 2 lety +1

    My name is Zi'Andria but I've mostly gone by Zi or Z. I used to let substitutes and teachers mispronounce my name because I was too shy to correct them. I never really liked my name, but I'm starting to appreciate it more. I'm probably the only Zi'Andria on this earth and I think that's something to be proud of.

    This is absolutely beautiful and it is so true I wish black people would love themselves and love their names and love them they are... Because when you change your name all you're doing is making white people more comfortable and able to tolerate you... Are you really happy with changing who you are to make white people comfortable?... I love my name and I say my name loud and proud just like Muslim people do just like Islamic people just like any African or european would I keep true to my name it is the most beautiful words to me and every black person your name should be a beautiful silhouette of letters put together rolling off of anyone's tongue to announce you are alive and here.

    I have a BIG name and it is beautiful and I am proud of it. it is unique like me and just mine. I have never shrank back from correcting people when they misspelled or mispronounce it. I do not respond to nickname and will tell anyone who ask what they should call me, "you can me what you like, but if it isn't (my name) I won't respond. only once has anyone said my name was ghetto, but that was because she didn't know I was walking up and doesn't speak French.
