    When she said "European history is offered as a major but African History is taught as an elective." Struck me because I'm a history major and never thought about that. This poem blew my mind.

      Anime Fan. lol what a lovely way to display the white privilege & ignorance the poet talked about in the video lol. African/African American history is APART of American history. So is Native american. I mean it IS their land. The least they good do is teach Africans in America or what you would call African Americans & Natives where exactly they came from & their TRUE history instead of white washed truths & lies. And also the hand they played in a lot of the atrocities that have & are still happening in Africa. Then again, THATS WHITE PRIVILEGE. Good job!

      Marrion librando well we did have an empire before whites invaded it. When you say colonized do you mean take away the Indians' land even though they were there first then put them in reservation camps?

    • @jaxfang
      @jaxfang Před 7 lety +5

      Diane Mayfield
      Reading your comment, I already see your ignorance of early, nomenclature based terms. "Indian" isn't the right term when referring to pre-western civilization. The European settlers that discovered America thought they landed in India, so they called the people of what we now know as America, Indians (and it stuck for 300 years). Native American is the correct term.
      Now onto your comment.
      Most native tribes had no concept of land ownership before European colonialism. Many of the tribes were nomadic in nature and would travel great swaths of land to hunt game or harvest wildlife. They didn't own the land and if they weren't able to defend it, I'm sorry, but the right of conquest is a real thing. European settlers were better organized, had better technology and they brought an arguably better culture, unless you think human sacrifice and living in squalor are somehow more noble.

    • @dianemayfield4136
      @dianemayfield4136 Před 7 lety +1

      The Dude Then why is is that the European s put the Natives in reservations and strip them of their culture. In the 1600s , Europeans came to Jamestown. They don't know how to hunt, fish , or plant food. The Natives taught them how.

    • @jaxfang
      @jaxfang Před 7 lety

      "You don't get to decide what was "civilized" or" rational" for any culture that you were not apart of.
      Actually, I do, because I have a right to decide whatever I want and I have a right to speak about it anyway I want. If a culture, say, practiced human sacrifice, baby-slaughter, etc. I have a right to say and subsequently deem that culture is sick, cruel and immoral, and the mass majority of people would agree with me.
      "The reality is that it was no coincidence people of darker skin were looked at as property while people with white skin took advantage and made themselves a superior."
      Well actually, it really could have been anybody. If their was a white populous with a culture that hated the Europeans (or anybody that tried to take their land), they would get the same treatment by the Europeans as the Native Americans did. Really, any group of people that weren't superior were the people who could be subject to slavery (black people, and Native Americans weren't superior by means of them not possessing the knowledge, technology and majority population as the Europeans did). Is slavery good at all? Of course not, but the people back then in the 1400's didn't know. Basically what I am trying to say is that up to the say 1900's, any group of people who were the minority, had a chance at being enslaved.
      P.S. Barbary Pirates enslaved around 1.25 million other Europeans out in the ocean. In this case, out at sea the Barbary Pirates were the majority, or dominant group at the time, and the Europeans, weren't.
      "diseases by nasty ass Europeans."
      The Europeans never knew they had those diseases, so it wasn't their fault the Native Americans died. Hell, the idea of germs wasn't invented for another 400 years.
      "So tell me how the hell they were so "civilized" with diseases when it was straight out germ ware fare that killed them and not Europeans using "tactical battle skills?"
      Europeans didn't need to kill the majority of Native Americans, because the disease did.
      "Americans have done some pretty fucked up shit like hmm having slaves. Which is not more "civilized" than someone practicing witchcraft."
      Slavery has been present since Hammurabi's time 3,800 or so years ago. It has been practiced by hundreds of cultures. America isn't the only one.

    It literally annoys me that people see africa as one nation. I could say I'm Nigerian five times and they would still ask "So you're african?"

    • @flexinglikeminato4093
      @flexinglikeminato4093 Před 7 lety +4

      So you dont want them to see it as one nation......Looks like you want to divide Africa

    • @bolajia.2037
      @bolajia.2037 Před 7 lety +17

      Flexing Like Minato You don't seem to understand that africa is a continent not a country. The continent has people whom speak different languages and have different cultures. I can tell the difference very quickly between a Ghanian and a Liberian. That isn't to say I want to divide people. But when you can acknowledge people's difference and not lump them into a box/categories you can begin to appreciate their uniqueness.

    • @bolajia.2037
      @bolajia.2037 Před 7 lety +7

      Cwentun Kelly I believe being racist is a form of uneducation. Racist are clearly afraid of certain groups of people without understanding who they are, what they believe and where they are from. So it is racist to me when someone says "Go back to Africa" or "So you're African". It would much more correct if they said "Go back to Nigeria" Lmao. Then I might actually go.....and visit 😂

    • @bolajia.2037
      @bolajia.2037 Před 7 lety +4

      Cwentun Kelly I don't know how best to make you understand this but I guess if your're not from a country in Africa then you probably can't empathize. Like the poet in the video says, European History is taught as a prerequiste and African History taught as an elective. Its little things like that. And why exactly is one form of history valued than the other? Easy answer to that racism is taught and learned. No one is born racist. What I was trying to get at in my first post is that some people use the word African as a way to suggest that a person is stupid, backwards and uneducated. Its not what they say it is how they say it. Someone who isn't racist generally ask where is Nigeria located. Others who are racist know where Nigeria is located but want to but people in their place by calling them African.

For those of my race who are getting mad, she's not calling us all racist. If you actually listen, she's trying to educate you. If it struck a nerve, perhaps you need to reevaluate as to why it is making you angry.

In fact, Im sure that as a white person, I will be labeled as racist to some.That doesn't stop me from thinking what I think is right. I understand that you have your own experiences that might have you think otherwise. However, I also have my own experiences where I have witnessed extreme racism. I don't seek approval but rather spread this awareness to people of my own clan. Change doesn't just happen with one side.

      I promised myself that I would no longer address the negativity on this page, especially when my poem was written to promote understanding and awareness, but your enthusiastic vitriol seems to not want to go unnoticed and yet you call her a child, as you throw your mantrum. You don't have to like the poem, it's fine, most people don't even like themselves, but don't claim that you want nothing to do with us as if we had a choice of living here, as if because you live in Africa you are specifically associated with the problems we face here, because if you were, you would know that plenty of major universities offer every culture's history save African history as a major. Again, we didn't ask to be in this predicament, we didn't ask to come here. I am not sure what you attempted to accomplish but I guarantee it wasn't to help anyone. I hope you feel better because it is quite obvious that this is your attempt to make someone else have a bad day in order to alleviate your own stresses. One of my very best friends is having her baby shower today. She is bringing forth life, we are celebrating the little hope for the future that we have. I can only hope that you understand how sad it is that I have to divert my attention to correct you. I empathize with your sadness but I will not take on your negativity. Have a day.

      @AlphabetCookie Před 7 lety +5

      The truth is no continents are destroyed. Some people might try to say Africa, but Africa is certainly not destroyed. Plenty parts of Africa are having trouble of course, and that is evidently and obviously not because of white people, and it is wildly racist to claim so. Certain parts of Africa have problems because they have socialism and Marxism there. People were displaced by wars, and that means civil wars and wars with Arabs. No, it is not any race's fault. It's called war. There is drought in Africa. In some African countries, 90% of the land is infertile for farming. Another problem is women there are having too many kids that they can't take care of. Another problem is dependence on foreign aid. Another problem Africa has is Islam. I have no idea why the woman in the video thinks she can fight racism with racism. She's not too bright. She made an emotional phony disrespectful argument that gullible virtue signalers or otherwise hateful people like to applaud. It's sad.

      She's basically saying that other ethnicities usually are the ones to learn America's popular language but America doesn't try to learn their languages.Why do you think English is spoken all around the world ?because other countries, mostly minorities work harder to learn about it. Here's a tip google Africa's popular language then google America's popular language.For Africa, you have French, Rwanda, English, and Portuguese.For America, it's English(Spanish).You proved her point in your comment actually."Those languages are taught all around the world bcuz they're spoken all around the world" You're exactly right people went through the effort of learning English all around the world but she's saying that even with this information There is a stereotype that black people are somehow stupid.

    “We learned your French [and etc]. You learned out nothing and called us stupid.”
    First she implies that we don’t learn about black history, then she later goes on to complain about the fact that we have black history month. I really don’t think she put very much thought into this presentation.
    “Getting 20% longer sentences for committing the same offense.”
    Those people being sentenced longer are those that commit repeat offenses. Repeat offenders get longer sentences than first time offenders. Blacks in the US tend to commit more repeat offenses, thus they get longer sentences more often. It’s really not that complicated.
    “A white felon is more likely to get a job than a black man without a record.”
    I looked high and low and was not able to find a single credible source to variety this claim. There were no sources or stats cited in this video and no way to verify the validity of this claim, so I have to assume that she just made it up.
    “It is Katrina answering the governments wishes for eugenics.”
    You do know that the Katrina hurricane had an impact on everyone living in New Orleans including the white population, right? Also, I’m a bit baffled by her implication that the government has a wish for eugenics. The US and most other first world countries abandoned its eugenics program decades ago. If the government really wished for eugenics then they’d simply reimplement the program or would have otherwise never abandoned it in the first place.
    “This isn’t even your nation.”
    Imagine the negative reaction we would hear if a white person said this to a non-white person. Anyway, I’ve never heard anyone white or otherwise call the US “their nation” in that it personally belongs to them. I’d say this nation belongs to the government, ie the people with all the Jet fighters, tanks, and artillery. I’m pretty sure they’re the ones that have this place locked down.
    “How do you discover something that wasn’t even missing.”
    When people say that Columbus “discovered” the Americas, they obviously mean that in the context of him discovering it for Europe.
    “Got white girls twerking in HD, but it was ghetto when we did it.”
    Twerking and other similar behavior is still seen as trashy when white people do it too. Tons of people were lambasting Miley Cyrus back in the mid-2010s for how she looked while twerking. Additionally, there are many black dancers and musicians out there that have been featured on television for their dancing, so clearly this kind of thing goes both ways.
    “Slavery isn't over, it’s just called the prison system.”
    Slavery and prison labor are not the same thing. Prisoners doing labor are not viewed as property and they are still granted basic rights as protected by the US constitution. I’m not saying that the US prison system is perfect. It isn’t. And I suppose there is a discussion to be had as to the ethicality of prison labor. However, trying to compare it to slavery is intellectually dishonest and frankly pretty disgusting on her part.
    “Your not racist because you don’t use the N word but y'all use “niggas” every day.”
    I don’t understand what she trying to get at with this point here. It seems like she’s saying that whites using words with a racial connotation proves that white privilege is real. I don’t think she thought that argument through very well given that she herself uses a phrase with a racial connotation (white boy) later on in the video. Again, I am led to think that she didn’t put much thought into this presentation.
    “[white privilege] is the acceptance of bombs over Baghdad, but not over Boston.”
    Pretty sure we’ve got lots of non-white people living in Boston. anyway, bombings, war, and violent strife in general is viewed as undesirable regardless of where it is taking place. Granted, people will naturally take more notice of it whenever it is happening closer to home, but we don’t simply become happy with it because it is happening further away.
    “Is European history being taught as a major and African as an elective.”
    Probably because European history has had a much greater impact on the US than African history did. The US began as a European colony and takes most of its cultural and political influence from Europe. Additionally, the US is a Western country and Western civilization originated and developed in Europe, thus further tying American history to that of Europe. If African history had somehow been the main force behind the creation of the US, then it would be getting the focus over European history.
    “Every white boy who wanted to fuck my brains out not because I’m pretty, but because I’m pretty for a black girl.”
    If somebody actually said that to you specifically, they I can see why you be offended. However, you can hardly get angry with someone for simply being more physically attracted to a certain type of people. White people can’t help it if they aren’t typically attracted to black women. As a matter of fact, almost every race of people has a bias favoring their own race when it comes to sexual attraction. White men are more likely to be attracted to white women, Asian men are typically more attracted to Asian women, Indians are typically more attracted to other Indians and so on. The only race that did not display this bias was black men. They were found to be more attracted to white women than black women. I’m sorry if that bothers you, but it really is just simple biology.
    “People thinking that Africa is one nation.”
    That’s just called not knowing your geography. I’ve met people (black and white) who think that Europe is one nation. I’ve also met people of different races who think that South America is one nation and that couldn’t name more than three countries within the Asian continent. This is not an issue that uniquely affects black People.
    “You say that black people destroy neighborhoods....”
    Pretty awkward to hear that line after 2020 when violent BLM riots have caused severe damage to several major American cities.
    “....when white people destroyed continents.”
    She seem to be referring to the popular myth that African countries are poor because they were exploited by European colonizers. If that’s really the case, why is it that Ethiopia and Iberia are still among the poorest nations in Africa despite being colonized for the shortest period of time (only about 6 years of Italian rule for Ethiopia and none at all for Iberia). Why is it that the most stable countries in Africa also happen to be the ones that were most extensively colonized? Why is it that promising nations like South Africa and Zimbabwe (formerly Rhodesia) only started to spiral into failed state status after black majority rule was established? Additionally, intervention from the Western world is what first introduced Africa to modern infrastructure, electricity, buildings higher than one story, laws against slavery, modern medicine, and a plethora of other great things that the African natives had not yet developed for themselves. Hell, most sub-Saharan societies didn’t even have the wheel before Europeans came. The truth of the matter is that European colonization is not an excuse for failure. Rather, it was a major catalyst for success.
    “Is learning about my people only 28 days.”
    She seems to be referring to black history month as if this is the only time we ever learn about black history. This is, of course, not true. People are still free to study black history as much as they want at any any given time of the year. Ironically, black history month was originally meant to highlight the accomplishments and historical experiences of blacks living in the US. I don’t see how that could be interpreted as a way of giving privileges to whites. If people are upset that we have black history month then I suppose we could always just get rid of it, but you can’t just go pretending that it’s existence somehow elevates whites above every other racial group. If anything, the reverse is true.
    “Throwing out a qualified applicant because their name sounded too African American.”
    Race based discrimination was banned by the 1965 civil rights acts, so she’s talking about something that is already currently illegal. If there is reason to believe that an employer is rejecting applicants for their race, then we have the power to take legal action against them.
    “….and dismisses all this truth I just spit. That is white privilege.”
    I think what she’s trying to say here is that using logic and common sense to refute the idea of white privilege is an example of white privilege.

      Did I say she was an idiot? No. I'm saying I rolled my eyes. She was incredibly condescending and I'm pretty sure you were born after slavery was completely abolished and the Jim Crow laws were deemed unconstitutional. You live in a world where white transgression is highly and actively looked down upon and still you want more. Her poem is filled with othering white people and acting as if all black people were one person. She's ignoring that white people are desperately trying to do the damage that was done and is constantly calling for retribution. Yes, I am very aware of the injustices that black people have gone through especially when it comes to police brutality and patronization, but I honestly hate victimizers and people who blame other people. And before you say anything about me not understanding racism, I'm a Filipino. I'm seen as the "ghetto Hawaiian" and overlooked for my smarts because of my race. What she says may be true, but it doesn't justify seeing an entire race as evil.

    the end was too woke !!! see with all those powerful messages said, there will still be those who disregard the struggles even though they can see it clearly... that's white privilege.

      But what you guys failed to realize is that only 20% of slaves were from Africa, most were native Americans who you guys stole from and then put us in slavery for four hundred years. And everything in this poem is true and if you disagree youre a part of the problem.

    • @NikkiYoung52
      @NikkiYoung52 Před 5 lety +3

      Africans "sold" other Africans. we know that... Its not that they were selling their own. Before Europeans went to Africa, there was social slavery that existed amongst the different tribes. This was a form of imprisonment for Africans of DIFFERENT tribes. If they broke a law or were cast out, they were brought into a new tribe as a servant. It was nothing like chattel slavery. The Europeans came and Africans traded slaves with them for weaponry and other goods that weren't native to Africa. But once the Europeans realized that they could make more money by not buying slaves and kidnapping them instead. Slavery in america did consist of Africans and Natives but do realize that the Europeans saw that the Natives would get sick from the diseases and die but the Africans didn't so they started using more Africans as slaves. If your only arguement is that our people sold us, then you're what's part of the problem. Europeans coming to America had genocidous effects on the native population and slavery has impacted capitalism and the black community in ways that we are still realizing today.
