  • Shift cable effort is 17lbs with the stern drive attached (moving into forward and reverse). Without the stern drive attached, the drag is 2.5lbs on the cable.

Mike mike mike......so I fixed my shifter cable. There was something missing from video. Its extreamly important. On the outside tansome mount , where the lower shift cable if you un hook the part that pivots and look behind where the cable is you will notice a brass nut. That nut is suppose to hold the cable in place. Mine was not. So my entire cable was free sliding as I was trying to set the shifter. And that's why my plastic end was floppy. I fixed it for now with a hose clamp....so excited....but then my impella housing melted. After trouble shooting the system i found that the ear muffs were crap. So i was good to go.....not so fast. My out drive won't go up and down now. The mechanism that's on the starboard side of the outdrive, that regulates the up and down rotted off. I tried to jump the system yesterday, i believe I have it set up correctly but still can't get the tilt trim cylinders to extend or retract..

Michael Gemaly Great news about the shifter nut. I go over tightening it in part 1 of this video series. As far as the trim issues, look at my other videos. I have gone over every possible trim point of failure out there! Hit me up if you need more help.

This nut I'm missing mine as well. So I'm constantly trying to adjust the engine bracket system to get that in between sweet spot all the time. Could this be the reason?

Have you done a video on the throttle cable, shift cable adjustment at the ESA bracket? If so, can you tag me in it, so I can check it out... Thanks for all of the great videos and information!

Hi Mike, like your videos, have an 88 OMC on witch just replaced shift cable, bellows and gimball bearing- kinda following your tutorials. Only difference, I've used a sliding hammer bearing puller and a 2x4 oak bearing installer. Problem is can't get the lower unit back in -did it many times before to grease the u-joints- what gives?

      What part is popping out?

Michael Romer what you refer to as the guide..the piece that slides forward and reverse on the cable, in its notch area there is the top roller of the Bell crank. The piece. The bell crank pops out of the slide when you shift back and forth. Anyway I thought I had it yesterday. But i only could get reverse and neutral..then I was able my hand pulling the shift cable able to get forward (motor off) but then it popped out. Then after being stuck in forward I got it ( by hand again) in neutral..then that's all I had ...then I started drinking tequila...and i got it by hand into reverse..but it would pop out of reverse..then I had more tequila hooked my shift cable up to my neighbors cable tv and went to bed.
