  • We found some rot! This particular leak is common in timber windows if they have not been maintained. Sometimes it can cause the entire timber window sill to rot away, we got lucky. In this exciting episode we go through some steps that you can take to prevent a leak causing damage again in the future.

I've definitely messed up by drilling oversized pilot holes to avoid shattering fragile old dry wood, thus leading my screws to spin. I regret those pilot holes.

      @HyperactiveNeuron Před rokem +1

Absolutely! I rebuilt a second story deck and it's staircase last year and I insisted on drilling pilot holes for everything because the old deck and stairs failed because they used twist nails. The screws with pilot holes will last MUCH longer. The joist tape I used will help a lot too

Do you know what makes your content stick above the rest? It's the fact that although you're extremely experienced in what you do, you still have those jobs that drag out and drag you down like us mere mortals, and you share that story with us. It's not you and a crew of carpenters smashing through it in days, it's you crafting and considering every detail and sharing that thought process with us. Don't be had on yourself, I'd say everyone watching is sharing your pain as us DIY types are often in this state!! Kia kaha bro

I really like this series because of its totality. It's not ‘since last time, this person did X or that person did Y’.
You are a small team, hacking at it, improving your house one step at a time.
I also think the fact that the house is being upgraded with funds generated by these videos create a dynamic where things are explained well but not lingered upon, and it seems you get to do it proper because then you can explain what you do.
Not that I think you wouldn't do it proper anyway, but things like moving most windows to their optimal position and explaining how and why leads to good content, good videos, and later to more views and more videos.

This has to be my fav ep so far because it’s so candid. Scott is showing us a glimmer of how hard it actually is to do what he does. He otherwise makes it all look so effortless. It’s a sage reminder that what he is accomplishing is staggering, and although a consummate professional, he is not without his stresses and pressures. I’m sure I’m not the only one watching for Scotts approach, over the progress he makes each video. I’m also sure we’d all watch him frame windows in crisp white linen shirts for years if we had to. Handsome bastard.

Now let's be honest, you are a role model, you show how someone can rebuild his house without expensive contractors so that it looks great, practical and comfortable. No matter how long it takes, it helps many to take the fear of something like that. In addition, you also show exactly how it is done. Also your fear as a professional to mess up becomes clear, while considering everything several times and still doubt, just like us. So what could be better? Please keep it up!!!

For me it is more about being able to enjoy a bit of your and Jess's life in New Zealand and what it is like to own and renovate your own home while I sit in Berlin, Germany. Showing it all, all the raw emotions and thoughts, is what makes these videos so lovely and where you connect with us, the viewer. I appreciate the fact that you get into the nitty gritty, checking out and taking care of all those little shitty bits. It's educational, entertaining and insightful.
Old houses have some interesting short cuts and means to cope with situational problems. It must be remembered when many of these places were built, materials were often in short supply.
This was mainly due to the various wars that consumed all sorts of materials. For instance, my sister's house, built just after the first world war has studs that go up a few feet then stop. Another bit of studwork will then go the rest of the way up - not sistered but standing off 12 inches to the side. It's an amazing piece of patchwork and it's only the weatherboards that hold it all together.

"Fussy" = pays attention to details and that's a great quality to have. Keep your head down, keep making steady progress and you'll get there Scott. And we're not going anywhere. I pretty much stop what I'm doing when I get notification about a new Scott Brown Carpentry video! Thank you Scott and Jess! You guys are great!

Brilliant episode Scott. I do renovations here in Canada and I use a dead blow hammer for knocking lumber into place, works great , much easier and faster than a framing hammer and they are cheap. Hope this helps. Keep up the great content

Going through the renovation on a 1900 federation house here in Tasmania. We are changing exterior weatherboards to fibre cement and replacing timber windows to uPVC, all very expensive. Should have waited and bought now instead of like 2 years ago and spending loads more on buying and renovation. But I can tell you fussiness is absolutely a compliment to any tradesman for their craftsmanship.

    Loved this exiting episode!
I've had my run ins with construction timetables as a family father working in IT doing renovation on our own house, an apprentice carpenter and journeyman doing commerial construction and as a master carpenter and construction architect.
I was reading meeting minutes from 5th of may where we noted that we expext all concrete work to be finished by the middle of june. As in today.
In actuality we are pouring the first plate next monday. Its three floors and 3000 sqm.
    Stuff happens.

Don't worry about "boring" content, as a layman it is great to see how these jobs are done correctly and all the detailed work that goes into them. Who cares if you are still working on the same room each episode covers a different aspect of the project and so is interesting.

Videos are always great, even when you were having a terrible day dropping things and couldn't find things you still have a smile on your face. Definitely number 1 CZcamsr and 👍 before watching video as know its always going to be great. Take it easy mate and try and enjoy the renovation as it's all looking great this side of the camera.❤ from N.Ireland

Are you ready to build the best chicken coop ever? Then you need this book! czcams.com/users/postUgkxzaRUJNcbypw-fRBDbqqz43ULIa-1EGP- It has tons of awesome barns and coops that you can choose from, without making you dizzy with too many options. The book is super easy to follow, with lots of pictures and videos to show you how it's done. But don't expect to learn everything about chickens here, this book is all about the structures. You'll have to look elsewhere for chicken care tips. Trust me, this book is a must-have for any chicken lover!

Ray's sense of humour is definitely the cherry on top to your channel 😊👍So thanks for editing to include his clever lighthearted comic comments. 🙏🇨🇦 Scott and Jess, you are keeping things real my friends. WE DIY"ers go through the same feelings in a renovation that you have expressed near the end of your presentation. Oh how many times I have thought that I wish to get on to the more "fun" tasks of a build! Then, as you appear to be also doing, I regroup my thoughts to put things into a realistic perspective, managing that sense of urgency, which generally leads to mistakes or a not as good a job. You got this Scott, Ray and Jess💯. A point to also mention is your editing skills are also well done and, from this Eastern Canadian household, eye catching scenery of beautiful New Zealand. I spent 10 months cycle touring and working in New Zealand, and several years afterwards visited New Zealand twice, all adventures in the mountains and kayaking trips in the South Island. We definitely will channel your thoughts the next time those feelings of urgency to hurry to complete important "ground work" tasks pop into our heads. Cheers, female carpenter DIY'er from Atlantic Canada over on the far side, East Coast, of Canada on a small little Island, the smallest Island of Canada called Prince Edward Island.☺💝🇨🇦 You guys got this....💪.....doing it well and right is the best decision...Slow and steady wins the race🚶🏁 LOL, Ray just "cracks us up" with his clever comments😍
