  • A short video by our MD Bryan Hindle from a retaining wall support job. Brick Tie Limited used Duckbill ground anchors to save a client from the need to rebuild a leaning earth retaining wall. The wall is solid brick and forms a boundary wall separating two separate gardens in Wakefield, West Yorkshire. The head of soil was only 1500mm, however the wall was slender and had started to lean into the neighbours garden. The homeowner didn't want the mess and disruption associated with the excavation and building work associated with a straightforward re-building program. The social housing landlord asked Brick-Tie if the wall could be retained using one of our specialised repair methods. We specified a duckbill ground anchor system. This system involves diamond core drilling through the wall below ground level before installing the anchors Then the tie bars are driven through the soil at a 20 degree downward angle, in this case to 3M beyond the wall. A hydraulic tension rig is then used to pre-tension each of the anchors. This mobilises the swivelling duck-bill head of the anchor. Once engaged the anchor resists the tension and the tension can be 'set' at the required level. In this case each of the duckbill anchors was pre-tensioned to 30kN. The galvanised plates were used to 'fix' the tension permanently. A wide range of these pattress plates are available included entirely recess and hidden models for historic or listed structures. The use of these methods is highly specialised and is part of the range of retaining wall repairs and structural strengthening methods Brick-Tie use. visit www.bricktie.co.uk for more information

Cheers Bryan - I learned something there - hadn't heard of " Duck Bill " anchors before.

Why did you cut the wall down? It will effect the neighbours privacy.

HI keven, The wall was about to fall over. There is now a sturdy lightweight fence atop the wall so no privacy issues. Thank you for getting in touch.
