I work at a place that is right next to a train track. When I am on break and a train goes by, it is 20 feet away from me. I counted one day....not the longest train that I have ever seen, but I did notice that the railroad wagons had the max load (225,000lbs) printed on the side and the actual load (80,000 to 90,000lbs) listed as well. And I counted 50 of those wagons (or cars, whatever). There were tanker wagons which are filled usually.
I get that an armored train with bulletproof everything would weigh a lot, but they are empty on the inside still. I doubt his train, with the 37 cars weighs as much as the trains that go by my work (I do live 1/4 mile from work too....and I live in Elkhart county, trains are a built in part of life) and I have seen trains that are a couple miles long....easily double the length of the one that I actually bothered to count.
I think all of this speculation as to why it is slow is silly. Its because its a piece of garbage that isnt state of the art. Its a retrofitted piece of crap using old tech, and an inferior rail system.

I think you are overthinking this. Of course the biggest concern would be derailment as the tracks probably aren't built/maintained to western standards. But this train doesn't need to go at bullet train speeds. It's comfortable enough for the dear leader and his cronies to work and sleep on, so it can keep going all night. I had thought when his father died that oh he will be kind and different. He will want to change North Korea for the good. Nope. Very wrong. Someone that is just as bad is lined up after him. I don't think his sister nor his daughter are much kinder. if North Korea really wants to change, then it needs actually to start either with the people or most likely military. At 5:39 in this video it's interesting to note how his sister, Kim Yo Jong exits the train alone. As she steps down from the train she has to pass through rows of people - presumably officials in dark suits on the left and soldiers in white uniforms on the right. Her eyes dart from right to left as she tries to assess the situation surrounding her - so she was clearly not prepared for this reception. She is missing someone she expected to be there to receive her.

Tbh, Kim Jong Un DOES have private jets: Two Ilyushin IL-62Ms are listed as transports for him. The IL-62M, though, hasn't been produced since 1995, North Korea has a very small aviation industry, if one can even argue that it HAS one to begin with, spare parts for such an old aircraft that only North Korea and possibly a single Belarusian airline operate are hard and expensive to obtain, not to mention that the Il-62M, being an older plane, is fuel-thirsty, with fuel being something North Korea has very little of.
So... Kim Jong Un may not have much of a choice, really, except to take a train instead of a plane. Trains use much less fuel (or for electric trains, none at all), and it could be more affordable for the cash-strapped country, where it uses lots of old technology, some dating back to the 1940's.

Kim isn’t trying to portray that he is a modest leader by traveling in a train. It’s because it’s his only option. Firstly, he isn’t traveling far distances. It’s not like he is invited to many foreign conferences. He mostly just travels across the relatively small country of North Korea. Secondly, even if he did need to travel far, North Korea can’t afford to buy and operate a large aircraft to do so. They can’t hardly operate a singular airline with antiquated aircraft. That’s why he was basically forced to travel by train to Moscow. What president would prefer to travel 20 hours by train over flying for 5. None. He just doesn’t have the choice. Especially when pointing out that they had to change the wheel gauge on the train. That’s a lot of work for an “optional” travel method.

Trains are important as both transportation and set module toys. Questions about the schematics behind the construction of these vehicles became important, with many wondering if there was any shortcut towards better education/transportation/research.
The front engine does have a bandit campsite for residential purpose and also, a inventory for extra activity. Thus the forward part if the train is compact and moderately speaking complete. Second - a fuel compartment and Third - a financial quarter.
Hence, with the addition of a diplomatic compartment one may understand why trains are linked in the quest for better blueprint paper.
