    Robben Island is most famous as the place where Nelson Mandela, the first democratically elected president of South Africa, was imprisoned for 18 of his 27 years in jail. The island has since become a symbol of the triumph of democracy and freedom over oppression.

    Mandela spent 27 years in prison, 18 yrs in Robben Island.
    They had to sleep against the wall so guards can see when passing
    The 4th window was Nelson Mandela's cell
    Nelson Mandela was a South African anti-apartheid activist and politician who served as the first president of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He was the country's first black head of state and the first elected in a fully representative democratic election

    Name is from the Dutch word for seals (robben), hence the Dutch/Afrikaans name Robbeneiland, which translates to Seal(s) Island
    "People with Leprosy disease were sent here"
    "On their arrival they came as husband & wife and were separated, as they were not allowed to reproduce"
    "As they were not allowed to reproduce, fearing that the desease will be passed on to the young ones"
    "Yet there were 41 healthy babies that were born"
    "The laws were made to control the influx of black people"
    "dompas was designed for black people to carry 24/7"
    Dompas literally meaning the "stupid pass"
    "They restricted them in certain areas, at certain times. If you were caught without a dompass- you'd get 6 months imprisonment or fine of R60"

    "During those days R60 would be a 4 months salary for a black person"

    "Shot and kill anyone who tried to run away"
    "Used as a place to get shade, eat their lunch & also used as a place to relieve themselves"
    "About 70% of them came here ad qualified nurses, medical doctors, teachers & professors"
    "30% were illiterate"
    "The educated would prepare a lesson for the next day"
    "They would go inside the cave and secretly teach each other how to read & write using their fingers & the sand"
    "Most of them left the island able to qualify for a university degree"
    "Even the constitution that governs South Africa today, was discussed inside that small cave"
    "The only building existing of people with Leprosy, wasn't destroyed because this piece of land doesn't belong to the state, it belongs to the Anglican church"
    Used as a wedding venue
    Apparently some ex- prisoners still live here, they struggled to adjust to the real world 8
    "The school was closed down due to low number of enrollment"
    "Children who live on the island commute by boat every morning to attend to mainland schools"
