  • I last saw this chess game in college, and I haven't been able to locate it since. I just found it in an archive, and it is glorious.

17:21 My idea was Qe4, which may not be as pretty, but, as far as I can see, is a forced mate as well

By ridiculous coincidence, between the time I recorded this game, and the time I edited it, Chessgames.com used it as a game of the day! See all the comments on the 21st: www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1534430. I think the reason I could never find it in their database was that I was confusing the first and last names.

The bishop pair was really dangerous. The light square bishop didn’t seem like it was doing much while the black one was doing all the pressuring, but then suddenly it because the strongest minor piece. An awesome opening and pressure by Black.
Thanks for the game, Teach!! 💯

Liss's move 21...Nf3 is a thunderbolt but White should have played 22.Qe3 Nh2+ 23.Kg1 Qe3 24.fe3 Ng4. Black will win another pawn for the exchange and has two strong bishops in an open position and White's pieces don't coordinate well. This should mean an advantage for Black even if the finish isn't as nice.
The move played by White leads to a lost position after lots of pretty tactics based on the overloading of his queen since she can't cover g5, e1, and d5 in some lines.

Good Evening: Found Black's move, but thought that White would not accept the offered sacrifice. Black later played a few moves whose wittiness made me laugh out loud--24...Bd2 and 30...Rc2.

At 13.52 second you suggest queen to h6 for white, but that was a huge blunder because that was mate in 2. The follow up is queen to e1 and after rook capture on e1. rook capture on e1 is just mate

    21 ... Nf3 is very tempting, e.g. 22 gxf3 Bxc3 23 bxc3 (the safest recapture) Bh3+ 24 Kg1 Qd5, and with the B pinned White cannot cover both f3 and g5, so Black wins. However, White can play 22 Qe3 Nxh2+ 23 Kg1 Qxe3 24 fxe3 Ng4 with only a slight advantage to Black. What have I missed?

I saw the power of 21 ... Nf3. If the Knight is captured then 22 ... Bh3+ Kg1 seems to bracket the White King in a hopeless mating net. Black Rook controls the e file, Black Bishop controls the h3-f1 diagonal while White h1 Rook is trapped and also blocks a critical flight square for its own King.
After this I wanted to either capture the f3 pawn via the Black Queen or give a check on the open g file. I couldn't foresee an immediate way of doing it but Black has too many threats and seems only a matter of time.
If however White played 22 Qe3 instead of exf3, I may have been forced to exchange off some pieces. 22... Qxe3 23 fxe3 Rxe3 24 gxf3 Rxd3. Who is better is not so clear now.

The Lichess engine thinks both 8...c6 and 8...Bd7 give black an edge, though it believes that offered by ...c6 is *slightly* larger.

    31. Qxh3 Rxc1+ 32. Kg2 Qxh3+ 33. Kxh3 Rxh1.
I didn't get this. For some reason I didn't see Bh3+ after the ♘ sac.
In the game line after 23...Bxc3, why doesn't white just recapture 24. bxc3 ?
