This is very special to me. Many many years ago, when the Aeroplane album came out, I was waiting outside the gym at a local college where a concert was to take place. A beat up car showed up. The performers got out & I helped them carry in their instruments. One of them asked if there was somewhere to eat. I told them of a pizza & sub shop a few minutes away. That's how I got to have dinner with the late great John Hartford, Norman Blake, Tut Taylor & Vassar Clements. Later on, while John Hartford was using the facilities, I held his fiddle for him. One of the greatest memories of my Life.

Nice job! While Glen Campbell is best known for doing this, John Hartford wrote it. I had the pleasure of playing a gig with him back in the seventies. He was a gentle giant. We were a rock band and were on a program of 4 acts of which he was the headliner. We did our best loud show (lol) and he came on right after us in his solo, genteel way and just proceeded to slay the crowd. He was so good. We were humbled that day. I never forgot it. It's not how loud and energetic you are, it's how you relate to the crowd. He had them in the palm of his hand so to speak from the first note. Standing ovation when he finished. He was special.

There are 2 amazing things about how John Hartford wrote this song.
    1. He wrote it beginning to end in about 12 minutes!
    2. He wrote this "country" song based on the movie "Dr. Zhivago" where Zhivago loses Lara and is walking down the railroad tracks.

I had the pleasure to meet John and hung out for a short while in the back room before a show at Michigan State around 1978. He played banjo, the autoharp, and tapped his shoes on a board with a acoustic pickup. He sang "I'll Fly Away" on the autoharp. I remember it like it was yesterday...

I was never a great entertainer but what I was exceptionally good at was helping young people. One year I taught a 15-year old to play guitar. I never charged money for my teaching. About this time, I and a friend started a music festival so I took this student and found 4 others and trained them on some instruments an within a couple weeks they were headliners. The first student was the only one who could play B7 so I told them to just strum air when they got to that part and my first student would play that chord plus I would play louder on my banjo. Audience never knew the difference and the kids got a standing ovation in a theater.
I taught them how to "play" an audience and they loved that. Eventually I introduced the first student to a friend of mine who was a session-band player for Patsy Kline in Nashville years before.. Not long after that that young man, who with a little help, developed the voice like John Denver. The session player arranged for him to go to Nashville and try out in a talent show and came in number 5 out of 2500 people. I had originally taught him how to play the correct musical way on Ghost Riders in the Sky, a song written by Stan Jones and later performed by a famous cowboy band and by Johnny Cash. He came home and he and his girlfriend whom I had taught to play electric bass, and I even played at Death Valley Days of 49 Encampment in front of over a thousand people. He even sold $4500 worth of CD's after we performed "Riders", and "On the Road Again" for 2 hours. We continued to play together and I would help his sister find someone to give her free fiddle lessons, and I got her to be a part of a bluegrass band I was in. The session player gave this young man, Joshua is his name, an $8500 Taylor guitar.
Later I introduced a young girl who was in my original festival group to this session player, Don, and she worked with Don who gave her a $2500 Taylor guitar. Joshua eventually became a good lead picker and could do well playing the lead on "Sweet Home Alabama."
We tried out for the Texaco Country Showdown in a few cities twice but didn't go farther. We got as far as earning $500 but that was all. This showdown paid the winning amateur group $100,000 and a recording contract. But we played at a cowboy festival in a big area and won a cowboy idol contest, playing two cowboy songs, a Willie Nelson one and "Rocky Top." No real cowboy stuff but the audience loved hearing a voice like John Denver and me playing Rocky Top. Another $500 win.
Later I helped a young neighbor learn to play the bass and the the guitar and I gave her a cassette tape on how to yodel. If one of you girls can learn to yodel, and audience will go bananas. I took this girl to that same cowboy festival In a neighboring state and we were not signed up to play and she wondered how we could get in, so we found a Gazeebo and she had my Taylor guitar and I had my Gibson banjo and I told her we were going to play. She was nervous about that, but she did well. She performed the Suzy Bogguss cover of "Someday Soon" with Suzy's voice break at the end. I had her play, "I want to Be a Cowboy's Sweetheart", another Suzy Bogguss cover song of Patsy Montana who was on the yodel tape I gave her. Pretty soon we had a crowd and then we went to a path near an eating place and got another crowd. From this I was able to sign her up for open mike. As an entertainer, I know other entertainers so I told young Erika that she needed to perform without me this once. And I went and found a yodeler who had made money in Nashville in the 60's and told him I wanted him to hear her. He was so impressed that he had her on a radio interview and later invited her and me and my wife and her dad to his lakeside lodge to perform.
Maybe you girls know all this but take any information from anyone like me that will help you. Learn to yodel. I think there is still "Homespun Tapes" where you can learn from real professionals in anything. Audiences like it when I yodel or sing Riders in the sky with a voice break at then end, but they like it ten times more if a young lady or ladies do it. I see you doing a Garth Brooks song. We did "The Dance" and George Straits "The Fireman". Audiences love songs that are familiar to them. When you get real famous you can do your own. Good luck.

My mother could yodel from birth! She made her own up, though totally untrained, and won the high school talent contest. Unfortunately there was no money for guitar lessons what with, I think, 10 siblings. She surely could sing as well as Loretta! Had 9 living children whom she loved so that took all her time and attention...I can only barely imitate her...😢I still love to hear yodeling. ...blessings to you and all your fans; you two are terrific!

Well, all I can say, is, once again, you two supremely, talented ladies never cease to amaze me with your musicality and your beautiful harmonies….I am 62 years old, and grew up as a Glen Campbell fan, watching any at all shows and specials of his own, and other stars and performers with my mother, who was also a huge fan of his, and I was blown away by his singing and his guitar playing from the beginning… I don’t know if you ladies ever saw the documentary on him some years ago, but even towards the end, before his mental faculties completely left him, when he performed one of his last shows, the dexterity with which he could still pick and play guitar was nothing short of a miracle… Thank you so much for this, because while I am not as familiar with John Hartford, this song has been a favorite of mine since I first heard Campbell do it probably a good 55 years ago 🧑🏻👩🏼🎼🎤🎤🎸🎸❤️❤️❤️❤️

I didn’t find out about Glens true talents until a few years before he passed. He was a gifted guitar player, the guy could play with the best of them. You two did right by singing his song. Thanks ladies 😊

Glen was very humble about his approach to this song. He said he didn't change a thing about it that John Hartford hadn't put in, except to raise the tempo a bit. They became good friends and would appear together in concert and on TV. John on his banjo and Glen pickin his guitar.

Nice rendition! I watched an interview with Alice Cooper. He and Glenn Campbell were pals in Arizona and used to golf together. One day they were late for a tee time and were caught by a police camera. Alice said the photo of their wide, shocked eyes in the front seat is still on the police station wall. RIP Glenn.

Great to see you back ladies. Great performance as usual. Always loved this song. Dean Martin also did a great version. What always amazed me though was the amount of verses and very complicated lyrics and words. Never knew how artists could memorise the words and do it live on stage. Were you both cheating a bit and have the words running up an audio que. wouldn’t minded if you did. If not, very well done. Whatever, great singing and playing. 🙋‍♂️🇬🇧👏👏👏
