  • Exciting changes are on the horizon for the once-vacant Kmart building at 1850 -1900 Bataan Memorial East in Las Cruces, NM. This iconic location is set to transform remarkably, bringing new life and significant economic impact to the area. With the demolition complete and a crucial zone change from C-2 (Commercial Medium Intensity) to C-3 (Commercial High Intensity) already approved, the stage is now set for a state-of-the-art family entertainment center to take shape.
Visionary developers Kevin McGrath and Michael Parker have ambitious plans for the 92,000-square-foot space. Their goal is to create an unparalleled family entertainment hub that will include 12 indoor pickleball courts-the first of their kind in the city-catering to the growing popularity of the sport. Additionally, the facility will feature a 30-lane bowling center, with six lanes designed explicitly for children. This marks the return of a full-size bowling center to Las Cruces, filling the void left by the closure of 10 Pin Alley in 2018. These unique features are sure to attract families and sports enthusiasts from all over.
But that's not all. The entertainment center will also house an Elite Family Entertainment Center with a laser tag arena, 5D cinemas, bumper cars, virtual reality theme parks, and sports simulators. A new Burger Time restaurant will take over the space formerly occupied by a 99-cent store, adding to the dining options within the complex. For adults, a sports bar and restaurant will provide a place to relax and enjoy a meal or drink while the family engages in various activities. The development will also include community facilities designed for events and gatherings, enhancing the area's social fabric.
Significant progress has already been made toward realizing this vision. On February 27th, 2024, the planning and zoning board recommended an approval to the zone change and on May 20th, 2024 the city council approved the change allowing for more intensive commercial use. With the interior demolition completed, the way is now clear for the subsequent phases of construction and renovation. While complete construction and permit approvals are still pending, architectural plans are being diligently prepared by Upward Architects LLC, based in Tempe, AZ. The developers aim to open the facility as soon as feasible, promising an annual economic impact of $2.5 million for the city once operational.
This project is more than just an entertainment venue; it's a revitalization effort that will benefit Las Cruces in multiple ways. The developers plan to host tournaments and community events, attracting visitors from neighboring states and communities and further boosting local tourism and the economy. Such a large-scale entertainment center will also create numerous job opportunities, contributing to the local job market. As construction progresses and plans are finalized, residents and visitors alike can look forward to a dynamic new hub for entertainment and social activities, promising to elevate the local lifestyle and bring joy to families for years to come. Stay tuned for more updates as this exciting project unfolds!
