We had a war of independence against Austria in 1848-49, but it was suppressed, and we were basically turned into a part of Austria afterwards. However, many people in Hungary still resisted the Austrians (either actively by movements, or passively), and their empire was suffering severe setbacks, such as losing from Prussia in the Austro-Prussian War. The Austrians realised that they needed to change this, especially with the Hungarians still wanting to break away, so they reached a compromise in 1867, which practically gave Hungary as much rights as Austria (technically, though one could argue Austria was still the dominant force). This lead to the dual monarchy, AKA Austria-Hungary.

Fun facts: The 1st "Kingdom" of Hungary was actually an empire, made by multiple autonomous principates and it completely vanished from the map during the war with Ottomans, when the empire was split, most of it became part of Ottoman Empire meanwhile Transilvania, Magyar nobles and Habsburgs (Germans) got into the 1st round of "civil wars" that were won by Iancu's wife & army.
Most of territorial gains that we normally associate to "KoH" were made during Iancu de Hunedoara the Transilvanian voivode, which later became the ruler.
The last 2 and biggest kings, Iancu and his son Matia, were actually Wallachians or better said "Romanian" Transilvanians.
Transilvania always was an independent autonomous multiethnic voivodate, then principate and one of the 3 centers of power in the "kingdom".
The 2nd round of civil wars, that basically liberated the long forgotten "kingdom", around 150 years later, from ottoman occupation, were oppressed by Germans (Habsburgs), that decided to recreate the "Kingdom" of Hungary for personal reasons. Transilvania joined again the empire as an independent principate, until around 1700 when Habsburgs finally annexed Transilvania to the "kingdom", when it ceased to be independent, until the half failed Spring of People.
The kingdom never was a kingdom and the so called magyar continuity never was neither a continuity nor only magyar X)
Hungarians were a mix multiple different people, ruled also by multiple non magyar people during their history (as territory, not as a single political or ethnic entity) , before Habsburgs started to heavily discriminate Romanians & Gypsies and before later etno-nationalism propaganda turned a multi-ethic empire into a magyar kingdom.
